Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Historic point for Jamaica in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- Jamaica achieved one of the most impressive results in its footballing history on Wednesday, drawing 0-0 with Mexico in the opening match for each in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014.

After seven straight losses to the CONCACAF powerhouse in Mexico City, the Reggae Boyz captured its first-ever point at the renowned Estadio Azteca on the strength of outstanding play from goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and a well-implemented game plan that kept Mexico largely at bay.

The result should not come as a complete surprise. In their last World Cup Qualifying encounter on October 11, 2008, the Jamaicans defeated visiting Mexico 1-0 in Kingston thanks to a first-half goal by Ricardo Fuller.

Arguably, the best chance of the game fell to Jamaica in only the 8th minute. Garath McCleary delivered a cross from the right that his Reading teammate Jobi McAnuff managed to direct towards the goal and off the post. The rebound came back to McAnuff, who ---with the goal at his mercy - took a shot that Mexico goalkeeper José de Jesús Corona raced back across the goal mouth to save.

The host started to assert itself more in the following minutes with Giovani Dos Santos coercing a stop from Ricketts and Andres Guardado spraying a speculative attempt over the crossbar from 25-yards out.

Just before the half hour mark, Jamaica´s Rodolph Austin intercepted a poor throw-in and sprinted into the left side of the Mexican box. The Leeds United midfielder took a left-footed shot that Corona nonchalantly tipped over the crossbar for a corner kick.

Before the break, Mexico´s Jorge Torres Nilo sprung a 30-yard effort that glided past the right post.

El Tri came out flying to open the second half, with Oribe Peralta setting up Hector Herrera and then the Santos star went wide himself just seconds later.

In the 64th minute, Javier Hernandez forced a tremendous save from Ricketts. Carlos Salcido followed-up swiftly, but he blazed high.

Jamaica could have won the game in the 68th off a miscue from Guardado. Ryan Johnson gained possession of the ball in the middle of the field and easily beat Salcido, before his weak shot rolled harmlessly into the waiting hands of Corona.

Hernandez had opportunities in the 89th minute and in stoppage time, but headed wide and then saw Ricketts come up big once again.

The result leaves both teams on one point, two behind group leader Honduras, which beat the United States 2-1 earlier in the day.

In their next qualifiers, Mexico heads to Honduras for a March 22 encounter, while Jamaica - which did not qualify for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup -- hosts Panama the same day.

Honduras upends U.S. in Hexagonal opener

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- Striker Jerry Bengtson took advantage of a defensive lapse to break a tie in the 79th minute and lift Honduras to a 2-1 triumph over the United States in the opening round of the CONCACAF hexagonal in World Cup qualifying on Wednesday.

The victory boosted the Hondurans into the final-round lead with three points, pending the outcome of the Mexico-Jamaica and Panama-Costa Rica matches later in the day.

It was the first time in five World Cup qualifiers that Los Catrachos on their own soil defeated the Americansl, snapping a four-game home winless streak (0 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses) against their northern visitors.

It also was the first time the U.S. lost the opening game of the hexagonal round.

The absence of midfielder-forward Landon Donovan, who has taken some time off from soccer, definitely impacted the American attack, which was sporadic, at best.

"There were too many mistakes and too many players today just didn´t reach their usual potential," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "It is really difficult to come away with a win here if you do not have everybody 100 percent at their limits."

Bengtson, who plays for the New England Revolution in the USA´s Major League Soccer, broke a 1-1 deadlock amid confusion on the U.S. backline. Oscar Boniek Garcia beat Geoff Cameron on the right side of the penalty area and sent a short pass to Bengston, who beat his man, Omar Gonzalez, as he connected from six yards past goalkeeper Tim Howard at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

"It was individual mistakes that happened," Klinsmann said. "We had problems closing down the passing lanes."

The U.S. had one last gasp four minutes into stoppage time as Gonzalez headed a corner kick over the crossbar just before fulltime was called.

It was a deserved win for Los Catrachos, who played a spirited game, finding holes in the U.S. defense.

The Hondurans enjoyed the territorial advantage in the opening minutes in the game, played in 84-degree heat. Garcia, who plies his trade with the Houston Dynamo (MLS), sent a shot wide left in the second minute, before Mario Martinez (Seattle Sounders) fired a shot that looked more like a cross that U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard was able to hold two minutes later.

Martinez tried a long-range attempt in the 22nd minute, but that effort sailed wide left.

Eddie Johnson created the Americans´ early chances. Geoff Cameron headed his 18th-minute corner kick over the crossbar and Jozy Altidore kicked a Johnson feed wide right in the 29th minute.

Midfielder Roger Espinoza made the U.S. sweat as he found some room down the left side, penetrated into the penalty area and sent a short pass to Arnold Peralta that defender Fabian Johnson managed to clear out of harm´s way in the 31st minute.

Two minutes later, Espinoza was at it again. This time he launched a 19-yard blast that Howard parried out of bounds for a corner kick.

The U.S. found the range in the 36th minute. Altidore sent the ball back to midfielder Jermaine Jones, who blooped a pass to an onrushing Clint Dempsey on the right side in the penalty area. Dempsey then volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Noel Valladares to the upper left side for his 31st international goal and a 1-0 lead.

The Hondurans did not take long to equalize as Juan Carlos Garcia scored off a bicycle kick four minutes later. After Gonzalez cleared the ball over the goal line, a Honduran corner kick bounded through the penalty area. Victor Bernardez ran the ball down and sent it into the middle of the box to Maynor Figueroa. Garcia gained possession and scored a spectacular goal to knot the score at 1-1 in the 40th minute.

After a giveaway by midfielder Michael Bradley, the Hondurans broke quickly and thought they had taken the lead in the 56th minute, but forward Carlo Costly was called offside.

Garcia demonstrated that he could play some defense as well in the 65th minute as he managed to deflect Dempsey´s shot from the right side.

Klinsmann made three second-half substitutions, including replacing midfielder Danny Williams with Maurice Edu in the 58th minute.

"Things kind of calmed down a bit," he said. "He cleaned more up. He played simple balls. We kept more possession. That´s what we were asking for."

The U.S., which plays three of its first four qualifiers on the road, will face Costa Rica in its first hexagonal home game in Commerce City, Colo. on March 22, while the Hondurans remain at home to welcome Mexico the same day.

Costa Rica rallies to tie Panama

PANAMA CITY, Panama - Visiting Costa Rica and Panama played to a thrilling 2-2 draw on the opening night of the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez.

Luis Henriquez opened the scoring for the host in just the 16th minute, when he gathered the ball in the Costa Rican area and slammed a shot along the ground past Costa Rican goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton.

Eleven minutes later, the Panamanians doubled their lead through defender Roman Torres.

Five minutes ahead of the halftime break the tide began to turn. Costa Rican forward Alvaro Saborio, who scored the last time these two teams met in a World Cup qualifier more than seven years ago, cut into the Canalero lead with strike that would ultimately prove vital to the visitors´ chances of salvaging something from the night.

That set the stage for a hard-fought second half in which the Panamanians failed to take advantage of multiple chances and were stymied on various other occasions by the active Pemberton.

In the 86th minute, Bryan Ruiz finally provided the night´s defining moment with a piece of individual skill. The Fulham attacker carefully measured a weighted pass and produced a spectacular bicycle kick that Panamanian goalkeeper Jaime Penedo could only watch bounce off his post and into the net.

The draw left both teams with one point after the first match day of the final round of CONCACAF qualifying. Costa Rica and Panama will both take to the road for the next round of matches against Jamaica and the United States, respectively.

Notes: The Ticos extended their unbeaten streak to nine games in all competitions, while Panama hasn´t lost in its last six overall.

Chelsea eyeing Santos´ "new Neymar" Neilton - report

According to a report in the Mirror newspaper, Chelsea are eyeing Santos youngster Neilton as a possible £5 million recruit following his displays at the 2013 Copa São Paulo youth tournament last month.

Neilton, 19 in ten days time, is yet to make his first team breakthrough for the Paulista side, but impressed greatly at youth level—having initially been left out of the club´s starting lineup at the event.

The youngster, who has somewhat modelled himself on Neymar, forced his way into the side with a series of energetic performances, before scoring a marvellous semi-final hat-trick (below).

Having watched Neilton´s performances in the latter stages of the Copinha, Neymar said of the youngster: "Neilton is a great kid. He has everything to be a big star in football.

"I´m happy because he´s a good guy and a brilliant player. He has a lot of talent. I hope he can continue to play beautiful football like this."

The biggest issue the young forward faces, though, is consistency. His manager has freely admitted that he never knows what type of performance his player will put in over 90 minutes and that could be his biggest obstacle in coming years.

Quick and undoubtedly talented, Neilton has enough about him to play at senior level. Stories linking him with a move to one of Europe´s elite, however, would appear to be a bit premature.
