Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

2013 U-20 World Cup: 5 Areas of Improvement for Uruguay Ahead of Saturday´s Final

Just about squeezing past Iraq and into their second Under-20 World Cup final, Uruguay’s semifinal triumph was undoubtedly a lot closer than Juan Verzeri will have wanted it to be.

The South Americans now prepare themselves for a showdown with a very confident-looking French side, against whom they’ll need to show marked improvement.

With that being the case, here’s five specific areas that Uruguay must improve in time for the tournament’s finale.

Isolating the Forward Line

Although Nicolas Lopez is one of the most successful talents in the Uruguayan squad at club level, the Roma starlet’s talents were far from properly utilised against Iraq.

La Celeste Olimpica were at times relying on route-one football, and even though that saw the likes of Sebastian Cristoforo and Leonardo Pais pick out their striker with ease, it might as well have counted for naught.

Even when Lopez was able to latch onto the end of a lofted through ball, the 20-year-old would often find himself hunted down by the opposition defenders and was regularly restricted to long-range efforts.

Against France, Verzeri’s men will need to improve their interlinking play between midfield and attack, using more phases of play to ensure the forward three aren’t found alone.

Finishing of Chances

Perhaps the most obvious area in need of improvement, Uruguay’s finishing against Iraq certainly left a lot to be desired.

In total, the South American side had 22 shots, 12 of which were on target. Only one of that sample resulted in a goal.

Inaccurate to say the least.

It’s also worth noting that a decent amount of those chances came in added time. It’s understandable that the youngsters might get tired in the Turkish sun, but the wasting of chances simply due to being too tired to get off a worthwhile shot isn’t an excuse Verzeri will accept too easily.

In a way, the loneliness that Lopez experienced at times is reason to appreciate the striker’s conundrum, but the likes of Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Diego Rolan also had chances they should have stuck away.

Credit must be paid to Mohammed Hameed, who had an impressive night in goal for Iraq for the majority of the evening. With that being said, a certain sense of panic did permeate from some of Uruguay’s starlets when the pressure was at its highest.

Commitment in Numbers Verzeri.

Even though the South Americans weren’t considered favourites by a massive margin heading into Wednesday’s semifinal, Uruguay seemed to have a certain cockiness to their play.

Instead of launching forward alongside their forward line, Verzeri’s midfield looked more than happy to pick out a ball and then simply watch the forwards struggle instead of offering support.

At least, that’s how the evening began.

Before long, the Uruguayans seemed to realise their night may not be as easy as first supposed, especially after Ali Adnan’s cheeky opener.

While it may represent a considerable risk of being struck on the counter, Uruguay need to be more confident when pushing forward in numbers and ensuring their forward three aren’t left to do the job alone.

A perfect example of this was Diego Laxalt, one of the most talented players in the Uruguay lineup, whose play was extremely limited thanks to a lack of support.

Cristoforo was the only one of the midfield three offering a consistent outlet. Pais and Gino Acevedo could stand to improve in that vein, if they’re indeed chosen to start against the French.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

On more than one occasion against Iraq, Uruguay looked a little too eager to get the ball forward and this eventually proved detrimental to their own play.

Especially in the second half, when chasing the equaliser, the Sky Blues wasted their fair share of possession simply because they wanted to make things happen as quickly as they had done in the group stage.

In the end, this just resulted in a shortage of possession, due to the frequency with which they were giving the ball away.

Sunday’s crescendo will already be far different in terms of match tempo just because the Uruguayans now head into their encounter as underdogs, miles away from the favourite status placed upon them against Iraq.

As a result, Verzeri needs to go back to his side’s roost, playing the slow, grinding game that made them one of the best defences in the earlier stages and allowed them to snatch a slight win over Spain.

Defensive Communication

Although Uruguay were good at restricting the opposition to long-range efforts on the whole, a bit more talking in defence would ensure that chances given to Iraq would have been even fewer.

In particular, the relationship between the two centre-backs and their goalkeeper could do with improving.

Against Hakeem Al Azzawi’s side, Gaston Silva and Jose Gimenez granted Mohanad Abdulraheem a little too much space.

Granted, Abdulraheem is one of the finest attacking players in the competition, but the defenders were still caught out too often—especially in the air.

Guillermo de Amores could obviously benefit from more communication with his defence and obviously needs to take care of his positioning more after being embarrassed by Adnan’s first-half free-kick.

The Uruguay No. 1 is going to come under even more pressure on Sunday and needs to ensure the channels between him and his outfielders ensures a smooth performance with more leadership coming from him.

Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Could Bernard and Philippe Coutinho Fit in Together?

Liverpool are hard at work preparing for the start of their preseason fixtures, but behind the scenes the club will also be attempting to negotiate a few more transfers before the serious matches get underway.

The Reds might have missed out on a prime attacking midfield target in Henrikh Mkhitaryan recently, who joined Borussia Dortmund, but latest reports state that Brendan Rodgers has already re-aligned his sights elsewhere: Brazilian attacker Bernard, as per Liverpool Echo, via SportsDirect News.

Bernard: Who is he and how much does he cost?

The easier question first; the report mentioned indicates that Bernard would be around a ÂŁ15 million signing, though elsewhere, such as Metro, he is rated at around ÂŁ25 million. That publication also mentions a quote from the Atletico Mineiro president Alexandre Kalil, who states that five clubs have already made bids for Bernard, though no club names are mentioned specifically.

Either way, he´s likely to represent a major outlay and go straight into the first XI, wherever he ends up.

Bernard is 20 years old and has thus far played 60 times for his club in the Brasilerao, as well as making 10 appearances in the Copa Libertadores.

An attacking midfielder who can play from the left or centrally, he has hit the headlines this season for his strong creative partnership at club level with Brazilian legend Ronaldinho. Bernard also caught the eye enough to be included in the recent successful FIFA Confederations Cup tournament, where he played twice, taking his total appearances for the Brazil national team at senior level to five.

The qualities he brings

A right-footed, left-sided attacker, Bernard is adept at cutting infield to create danger by committing defenders. He´ll run past them with ease if he so chooses, with his dribbling ability his primary weapon. Good movement and the technique to quickly swap passes to open up space is a feature of his game, with his pace able to move him beyond the line of the defence.

The young Brazilian is a hard-working player, strong despite his small stature, but is very much a player who displays his best attributes when heading toward goal.

Liverpool, or whichever club he eventually joins, will be signing an attack-minded talent who can bring goalscoring chances for himself and others to the team, and who is only likely to keep getting better over the coming seasons.

Bernard and Coutinho?

Liverpool, of course, already have themselves a young Brazilian talent.

Philippe Coutinho joined in January of this year and immediately proved himself an exceptional addition, starring over the second half of the season and laying on a raft of chances for his fellow forwards.

Would they be able to play in the same team? Almost certainly, though it would mean that tactically, other areas of the side might have to recompense.

Coutinho brings an element of finesse and vision to the team; deft touches, instant control and drive toward goal, and the execution of passes to pick out willing runners ahead. Bernard would certainly be one of those, providing penetration from the flank and looking to get in between central defenders and full-backs, though he also likes to pick the ball up in deeper areas to utilise space to run into.

B/R´s Callum Fox remarked in conversation of the potential duo: "Bernard brings more of the ´Ronaldinho´ to Coutinho´s ´Kaka.´"

On the other hand, that would give Liverpool two relatively lightweight players in attack, plus a striker, who would not be relied upon to go tracking back too much, though pressing at the opposite end of the field would be a requirement.

The Reds would have to look at balancing out that attacking lineup with a Jordan Henderson-esque, or Dirk Kuyt-esque perhaps, option on the opposite flank—without sacrificing any technical quality, of course.

It remains to be seen if this is a serious and realistic target for Liverpool to aim to bring to Anfield this summer, but a pair of Brazilian threats in the final third would certainly give the Kop plenty to look forward to next season.

Former Santos star Coutinho slams ´absurd´ Robinho

Santos legend Coutinho has slammed Robinho for his ´absurd´ demands after a move from AC Milan collapsed this week.

The Peixe were unable to meet the Brazilian´s demands and all prospects of a homecoming evaporated.

Now former player Coutinho has criticised Robinho´s priorities and claims he will waste away at Milan.

"It may be the idol of the supporters of Santos, but I have never said anything," Coutinho told Globoesporte.

"A player who leaves via the back door must never return. The wages that are required are absurd, and for me, he should remain where he is. He is not even playing at AC Milan."

Juninho Pernambucano will play for ´free´ at Vasco

It has been revealed today that on his return to Vasco, Juninho Pernambucano will play for “free”.

Among the terms of the agreement, yet to be confirmed by the board, it has been decided that the former Lyon midfielder will not receive a wage in his spell at the club, reports Lancenet.

The former Seleção international will instead only receive payment in the way of debt still owed to him by the club from his previous time there, which stem from bonuses and salaries that were unpaid.

The 38-year-old, who has had two previous spells at Vasco, returns to the club from New York Red Bulls until December and will then retire from playing.

This, and other details of his contract, is set to be confirmed by the player himself on Friday when he is expected to join his first training session and be presented as a Vasco player once again.

Flamengo interested in Arsenal left-back André Santos - report

Flamengo are interested in Arsenal´s left-back AndrĂ© Santos, according to reports in Brazilian press.

AndrĂ© Santos was loaned to GrĂȘmio during the first half of the Brazilian season, but he left the club after failing to impress there.

Globo Esporte reports that there have been initial talks already, but time is running out as Brazil´s international transfer window closes on July 20.

Flamengo also need to sort out the situation of Ramón before signing André Santos, but other Brazilian clubs are believed to be interested in the Arsenal player.

AndrĂ© Santos´ contract with Arsenal expires only in 2015, but the English club do not plan to keep him in the squad next season.

Flamengo´s boss Mano Menezes has worked with AndrĂ© Santos before, when he managed Corinthians from 2008 to 2010.

Thiago Silva denies Barcelona agreement

Paris St Germain defender Thiago Silva and his agent have moved quicky to quash rumours claiming a deal has been agreed with Barcelona.

Despite regular claims from the Seleção captain and his representative that no summer switch is in the pipeline, speculation regarding a move to Camp Nou refuses to go away

Sky Sports are reporting that it is now being suggested that an agreement has been reached with Barca as the Catalan giants are known to be long-time admirers of the defender.

These latest reports have been categorically denied, with Thiago bemused as to where such stories keep coming from.

The Brazil star, who lead his country to Confederations Cup glory last month, and his camp insist that no discussions have been held with Barcelona and that there is no desire to bring an end to a French adventure after just one year at Parc des Princes.

A statement released on Thursday read: "Thiago Silva and his agent Paulo Tonietto deny any agreement regarding a transfer to Barcelona, as had been published by Spanish newspaper Sport.

"Besides, we reaffirm that no meeting or agreement with the Catalan club took place, and that the player is under contract with PSG."
