CONCACAF Gold Cup Wrap: Mexico into quarters

http://www.youtube.com/w…d_OCE1yDnVU

Mexico are into the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals after a 3-1 win over Martinique on Sunday as Panama finished top of Group A.

Minnows Martinique surprised Canada in their opening match and pushed Panama, but they were no match for Mexico.

Marco Fabian, Luis Montes and Miguel Ponce scored for Mexico at the Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Colorado.

Kevin Parsemain had pulled a goal back for Martinique with a penalty late in the first half, but Ponce´s late effort sealed the result for Jose de la Torre´s men.

A draw would have been enough for Mexico, but they made the perfect start when Fabian opened the scoring on 21 minutes.

They had several chances before Kevin Olimpa could only parry a powerful Rafael Marquez strike, and Fabian was on hand to put away the rebound.

Montes doubled Mexico´s lead on 34 minutes with a strike into the bottom corner before Martinique pulled one back.

Parsemain was brought down in the area by Alejandro Castro and he made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Both teams had their chances in the second half before Ponce sealed the win for Mexico, tapping in a Miguel Layun cross from the right.

In the other game, Panama and Canada played out a scoreless draw.

It ensured Panama finished top of the group, while Canada complete the tournament without a win and having failed to score.

Mexico through to Gold Cup quarters

DENVER -- Marco Fabian and Luis Montes scored goals 13 minutes apart in the first half and Mexico defeated Martinique 3-1 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday.

Miguel Ponce scored for Mexico in the 90th minute to secure the win.

Mexico, the two-time defending tournament champions, moved to the quarterfinals after losing its first game of pool play to Panama.

Mexico (2-1-0, Pool A) beat Canada 2-0 on Thursday and clinched second place behind Panama and secured a berth in the next round with Sunday´s win.

"There´s a lot of things we have to correct, and a lot of times victory covers those errors," Mexico coach Jose Manuel De La Torre said. "Winning is great, but after the victory we´ll make an analysis of what we did right and wrong."

Kevin Parsemain scored for Martinique, which lost its final two games of the tournament after opening with a 1-0 win over Canada on Saturday. Martinique finished pool play 1-2-0 and now has to wait to find out if it is one of two third-place teams to advance to the quarterfinals.

"It´s very simple. Our destiny is not in our hands anymore," Martinique coach Patrick Cavelan said. "We would have preferred to get our qualifications by ourselves but this is the game."

Mexico carried the play for most of the first half Sunday and had several good scoring chances before breaking through in the 20th minute. Rafael Marquez put a hard shot on net that Martinique goalie Kevin Olimpa deflected to the top of the penalty box. Fabian, trailing the play, chopped the rebound over Olimpa to make it 1-0.

It was Fabian´s third goal of the Gold Cup.

Montes gave Mexico a 2-0 lead when he sent a low shot into the left side of the net in the 33rd minute.

Martinique made it a one-goal game late in the first half when Parsemain, taken down in the box by Alejandro Flores, scored on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.

Both teams had chances in the second half, but couldn´t capitalize until late when Mexico scored. Miguel Layun carried the ball down the right side and sent a crossing pass to Ponce, who kicked it into the open net to clinch the win for Mexico.

"This was important," Flores said. "We have to go one step at a time, but I think this was a very important game for us. We still have a lot of things to improve, in the midfield and on defense."

Mexico´s third goal could impact Martinique´s chances of making it to the quarterfinals because goal differential is a factor.

"In the second half we were able to adjust, but we lost focus and allowed the last goal," Cavelan said. "That could be bad for our qualification."

This was the first meeting between the countries since the 1993 Gold Cup. Mexico won that game 9-0 on the way to its first of six Gold Cup crowns.

A seventh title is still possible for the defending champions.

"The objective is to go for the title and that´s the commitment to keep working, to get to the final and to get the Gold Cup," De La Torre said. "Pressure or no pressure, that´s the way it is, that´s the way we work. It´s part of our job."

One step backward, two steps forward

Oddly enough, Mexico´s latest game, a 3-1 win against Martinique in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, gave added ammunition to supporters and detractors alike, since it was a combination of the best and worst yet seen from the squad.

The good included a definitive golazo from midfielder Luis Montes, who cracked an outside line drive of a shot that left Martinique goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa with no chance. It was a goal not only of talent and skill, but of initiative and daring, which is exactly what Mexico has lacked for months.

Another positive aspect has been the reliability of Marco Fabian to bring something positive to the team. In three Gold Cup matches, Fabian has scored in every match. His goal against Martinique was the opening strike. He was trailing the play, and when Olimpa saved the initial attempt by Rafael Marquez Lugo, Fabian knocked in the rebound, though the high bounce that eluded Olimpa´s grasp could have been the result partly of a slight mis-hit. But whether he is that good, or a little lucky, Fabian has delivered consistently this tournament.

It also generates hope in the squad to see the sheer number of chances created by Mexico. Miguel Layun sent in cross after cross to his teammates, giving them perfect finishing opportunities. Miguel Ponce, who entered the match in the 88th minute, scored the final goal in the 90th by making good on a Layun pass.

Despite Layun´s quality crosses, he is still at the top of the list of the bad displayed by El Tri for the poor foul in the box that let to Martinique´s penalty goal, putting the Caribbean squad within one goal of an equalizer for the majority of the match. In general, Layun´s defending was atrocious throughout the match, with mistimed, lunging tackles, indifferent positioning and a clear lack of speed when chasing attackers.

In a different way, Layun was also part of another head-scratching El Tri aspect: His service into the box was so good, so often, that when another botched finish was the result time and again, it was simply depressing. Granted, Olimpa had some quality saves, but far more often, he wasn´t even tested.

Another bad moment was when goalkeeper Miguel Munoz, entrusted with a match that would have eliminated El Tri if it had been lost, had a complete brain cramp moment in which he left his box to apparently try to shepherd a ball safely over the line for a goal kick. Instead, he allowed a Martinique player to rob him off the ball. Only a deflected pass saved Mexico from disaster.

With the penalty concession coming just before the half, Mexico should have charged out of the locker room eager to reassert its dominance and to put the potential elimination game on ice. Instead, the squad fell back into bad habits of aimless passing, frustrated solo runs that ignored open teammates, and an inexplicable lack of energy and urgency.

Though his scowl deepened on the sideline, coach Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre didn´t really make assertive moves to stop the negative slide. Ponce, for example, wasn´t put on the field in place of Marco Fabian until very late.

De la Torre also risked a serious injury to midfielder Efrain Velarde by not pulling him out of the match when he knocked heads hard with a Martinique player. Velarde was bleeding and seemed dazed, but since he was a sub, de la Torre sent him right back into the game after a quick patch on the wound. A more cautious move would have been to replace him immediately.

Though de la Torre´s players gave Martinique opportunities to steal the match, in the end it didn´t happen. Mexico pulled out the win. El Tri moves on now to the elimination stage of the Gold Cup, but unless the team finds a way to minimize mistakes and weaknesses, Mexico remains its own worst enemy. The knockout phase of any tournament is not kind to such teams.

Mexico 3-1 Martinique: El Tri player ratings

When Luis Montes scored a screamer from 25 yards to make it 2-0 in the 34th minute, you thought, just maybe, that El Tri was going to put Martinique to the sword, net a boatload of goals and find some of its old swagger.

But this Mexico side seems intent on making things difficult, and an individual error by Miguel Layun to hand Martinique a penalty late in the first half gave the Caribbean Island side a lifeline. After the break, El Tri huffed and puffed but couldn’t break down the Martinique defense until Miguel Ponce´s late goal put the game to bed and made it 3-1.

It was a small improvement for Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre´s team and gets Mexico into the knockout stages, but much work remains if El Tri is to successfully defend its Gold Cup crown.

Player ratings:

Moises Munoz, GK -- 5: He was not called on very often and dealt well with the few opportunities Martinique produced. However, the America keeper made a mistake in the 13th minute when he stormed over to the corner flag to try and shepherd the ball out. Luckily, it was easily disposed. It should´ve led to a goal and wasn´t the type of decision-making Chepo will want to see in his goalkeepers.

Miguel Layun, RB -- 5: A pinpoint cross to Raul Jimenez in the 7th summed up what was a great start to the game from the belittled player. His surging runs were a huge positive for El Tri. Much of the good work was undone when he committed a rash foul to hand Martinique a penalty just before halftime. He made up for that, to a degree, with his assist on Mexico´s third goal.

Joel Huiqui, CB -- 5: He made no obvious mistakes and dealt well with high balls into the box, but the Mexico captain has to take responsibility for another collectively shaky display at the back, especially in the first half.

Juan Carlos Valenzuela, CB -- 5: He miscontrolled the ball in the 12th minute to let Daniel Herelle run clear through on goal. It was another basic error from Mexico, but, aside from that, "Topo" was competent in the heart of the defense.

Adrian Aldrete, LB -- 6: Another solid performance from the 2005 U-17 World Cup winner. Not as eye-catching as Layun on the other wing, but Aldrete is establishing himself as a good alternative at the position for the full national team.

Alejandro Castro, DM -- 5: Again dropped deep -– at times as a third center back -- to allow the full backs to push up. Castro shielded the defense tidily and carried out his water-carrier role with minimal fuss.

Carlos Pena, CM -- 5: A frustrating performance from the Leon midfielder. He had moments where he showed that he can be the all-action presence in the middle of the field that Mexico is desperate for, but also gave the ball away all too often, no doubt frustrating his teammates and coach.

Luis Montes, RW -- 7: A bright spot for Mexico. Montes scored the vital second goal with perhaps the best strike of the Gold Cup so far. Montes also set up El Tri´s opener. His energy and attitude was excellent

Marco Fabian, LW -- 6: Quieter in the second half, but was perhaps Mexico´s best player before the break, when he opened the scoring and looked lively both on and off the ball.

Rafa Marquez Lugo, CF – 4: A night to forget for Marquez Lugo, who looked short on confidence. The Chivas forward dropped off Jimenez, but didn’t really link up well and was off target with his shooting. Wouldn’t be a surprise if Javier Orozco takes his place in the quarterfinal.

Raul Jimenez, CF – 6: Unlucky not to score in the 7th with a header that rebounded off the bar, Jimenez worked hard up front and is benefiting from his run of games as a starter for El Tri.

Substitutes

Efrain Velarde (for Pena, 70) -- 6: Added a little more energy to Mexico´s midfield in the final 20 minutes.

Javier Orozco (for Marquez Lugo, 82) -– Didn´t feature long enough for a grade, but managed one attempted at goal and looks full of confidence.

Miguel Ponce (for Fabian, 88) -– Was in the right place at the right time to score Mexico´s third goal, with his first touch.

Ibañez, Quilez y Regueiro, a Racing

Zarate returns to Velez

Velez Sarsfield have confirmed the capture of former star, Mauro Zarate in what signifies a considerable coup for the Liniers based club. As Facundo Ferreyra and Gino Peruzzi head in the opposite direction Velez have made a bold statement in bringing back a player with hopefully his best years ahead of him.

As has been discussed over the past few weeks it would now appear that things are now finalised. Zarate has agreed to return to his first club having previously stated that it was his preferred destination and will be playing back in Liniers for the next 2 years. Being a free agent since leaving Lazio at the end of the season bringing back Zarate proves to be a good piece of business for Velez, especially as when he left to sign for Al-Saad in 2007, it was reported to be for a fee in excess of $20 million.

With the good news of Zarate’s return Velez are also expected to say farewell to another two of their most exciting young players. Facundo ‘Chucky’ Ferreyra and Gino Peruzzi are expected to complete their moves to Shakhtar Donetsk and Sunderland. The latter now seems to have put aside some earlier contractual issues with the Wearside Premier League club.

With the money from these moves we will wait to see if Velez now make a move for Fernando Gago. After his disappointing loan move during the Torneo Final, Velez were reportedly keen to use any funds raised on making his move to Liniers permanent but will obviously face some competition for his signature.

San Lorenzo continue to recruit and look to be growing in strength

Union’s talented teenager, Juan Ignacio Cavallaro could be next through the door

San Lorenzo look set to announce the captures of Fabricio Fontanini and Ignacio Piatti (an extention to his year long deal from 2012)as their recruitment drive continues. With several names brought in last week and the expected signing of the talented, Juan Ignacio Cavallaro, San Lorenzo could be a real force in the Torneo Inicial when it kicks off in August.

Having finished the Torneo Final in breathtaking form, 10 unbeaten and a series of 6 wins on the bounce, San Lorenzo are now adding to that squad in what looks like a serious challenge for the Torneo Inicial.

The latest additions to the rebuilding are Fabricio Fontanini, the young defender who performed admirably last season for Atletico Rafaela and the resigning of talented midfielder, Ignacio Piatti. Piatti signed a one-year-deal when he arrived from Lecce last year and with that deal expiring it appeared that he maybe on the move again but he has put pen to paper on another year much to the joy of all those at the club.

This, already on the back of the signings of goalkeeper, Cristian Alvarez, who arrived from Espanyol and will naturally replace the now departed, Pablo Migliore who signed for Dinamo Zagreb following his stint in jail, Quilmes pair, Martin Cauteruccio and Fernando Elizari and San Martin defender, Emmanuel Mas. All the signings come at an age when they will improve and certainly add to the San Lorenzo first team.

Another player, coming back from a loan spell in the UAE with Emirates Club is Paraguayan International, Nestor Ortigoza. The former Argentinos Juniors, Clausura winner and Footballer of the Year returns to add some experience and quality to the midfield.

However, the likely transfer of Juan Ignacio Cavallaro will signal some real intent as the 19-year-old attacking midfielder, from relegated Union has reportedly had offers from Brasil as well as Valencia. Negotiations have been on-going with Union but are seemingly close and the addition of Cavallaro to San Lorenzo’s youthful side could elevate them to genuine championship contenders.

Vinterturneringerne er begyndt i Argentina....Boca og Estudiantes mødtes...

Boca le ganó por 2-1 a Estudiantes

http://www.youtube.com/w…PNrXO5PM4ZM
