Al-Khelaifi holds sway for Thiago Silva

Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva has spoken once again of his admiration for Barcelona, but declared his "very good relationship" with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has helped persuade him to stay in the French capital.

Thiago Silva, 28, has four years remaining on the contract he signed with PSG following his €42 million move from AC Milan last summer.

However, the Brazil international has still been consistently linked with a move to Barca, who have reportedly already made a €32 million offer for the centre-back.

"I have four years on my PSG contract, and I´m going to respect it. I have a responsibility towards an important club in my career. I don´t have anything else to say. As far as potential negotiations, you´ll have to talk to my club about that. It´s pointless putting me under pressure. I´m used to it, I´m experienced," Thiago Silva, who will not return to training until July 30 following his exertions in helping his nation win the Confederations Cup last month, told globoesporte.com.

"I have affection for Barcelona and their style of play. Everyone loves the way in which they play. As I´m passionate about football, I do too. But there´s nothing certain for the future. I´m happy and I hope to be able to honour my contract at PSG."

Thiago Silva was given the captain´s armband by former PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti last season, leading the club to their first Ligue 1 title since 1994. And Laurent Blanc, the Italian´s successor, has already acknowledged the defender is the most likely candidate to continue in the role.

Al-Khelaifi has also repeatedly emphasised the importance of Thiago Silva to the team, and the player himself revealed that his admiration for the Qatari was a further factor in his decision to remain in Paris.

"I´ve spoken about it many times with the president. The season is going to start as the last one finished. I´m going to be wearing a PSG shirt," he said. "He´s a very nice person. We have a very good relationship. That pushes me to stay. It gives me even more motivation that I have this relationship with the president and the owner of the club."

Thiago Silva’s words follow on from those of his agent, Paulo Tonieto, who told PSG´s official website earlier this week: "Thiago Silva is a Paris Saint-Germain player, he has a contract and he´s going to respect it. The rumours exist today as they did last year, but Thiago Silva is a PSG player and he will go to the end of his contract with his club."

Wolfsburg eye Gustavo deal

Wolfsburg are lining up a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo, according to reports in the German media.

Gustavo, 25, who is under contract at Bayern until 2015, could struggle for first-team football at the Treble winners next season, following the signing of Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Sport Bild reported on Wednesday that the Brazil international will be one of the casualties as coach Pep Guardiola looks to implement his new 4-1-4-1 system.

Gustavo played a part in the Selecao´s triumphant Confederations Cup campaign last month, and with opportunities limited at the European champions, he could be forced to move on in order to preserve his chances of playing in the World Cup next summer.

Wolfsburg are believed to have set their sights on the former Hoffenheim player, with general manager Klaus Allofs stating that there is no doubt about the quality of Gustavo, who “meets all the criteria”.

However, the transfer fee and Gustavo’s wage demands, as well as a lack of European football for the club next season, could prove to be stumbling blocks.

“We will only do something in the transfer market if the quality and the price is right,” Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking told kicker.

The Bundesliga club may be aided in their cause by owners Volkswagen, though, with CEO Martin Winterkorn recently quoted as saying: “If it is necessary we would be ready to step in.”

Winterkorn is also a member on the Bayern board.

Schafer named new Jamaica coach

Winfried Schafer has been named as the new coach of Jamaica.

The 63-year-old German has previously led Cameroon and Thailand, as well as a host of club sides in his 31-year managerial career.

He replaces Theodore Whitmore, who stepped down on June 12 after seeing his side lose four consecutive FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

Schafer, who had a successful playing career in his native Germany, faces a tough task to guide his side to the 2014 finals in Brazil, with the country currently bottom of their qualifying group with two points.

A statement on the Jamaican Football Federation official website welcomed Schafer to the job, adding: "This is certainly another chapter in Jamaican football, a chapter which could bring bountiful rewards.

"Welcome to Jamaica coach."

Costa Rica does everything, except score, in U.S. loss

EAST HARTFORD, Connecticut – Jorge Luis Pinto was impressed with his team’s performance against the United States Tuesday night in the Group C finale of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Rentschler Field.

The Colombian-born coach went down a checklist of positives he saw from the Ticos.

Play tactically? Check.

Play aggressively? Check.

Play hard? Check.

There was just one thing missing.

“Goal scoring, that was our problem tonight,” Pinto said. “Playing locally was one of the toughest things, but unfortunately we couldn’t get where we wanted, but we’re going to continue to progress.”

Costa Rica had already clinched a berth into the quarterfinals this Sunday in Baltimore, but failed to beat the United States again. It is winless in seven all-time Gold Cup games against the Americans, including six losses.

“We feel that we played very well,” Pinto said. “We’re going to continue to improve on what we’re doing. Tonight was not our night. I’m happy that collectively we improved our game and we have been able to do things better. I give it to the U.S., but we feel that we did our strongest performance today.”

Brek Shea’s 82nd minute winner, which came on a quick counter after Carlos Johnson’s header at the back post was denied by U.S. goalkeeper Sean Johnson, ended the Ticos’ remarkable stretch of 785 minutes without conceding a goal.

That streak started during a 1-0 loss to the U.S. in a World Cup qualifier this past March. Costa Rica reeled off seven consecutive games without a loss before again falling to the U.S. Tuesday night.

“I feel like the U.S. has always been a strong team, they have improved a lot,” Pinto said. “They also had a very good second half. We took the ball away from them, however, but they were able to score the goal, which determined the match.”

It’s possible Costa Rica and the United States will meet again in this tournament, but first up are quarterfinal matches at M&T Bank Stadium. The U.S. takes on El Salvador, while the Ticos square off against rival Honduras.

The winners meet in the semifinals in Arlington, Texas. Pinto believed that if his team follows a similar script against Honduras, Costa Rica can be among the last four standing following the weekend.

“I always love playing Honduras,” he said. “They’re always tough games. All we have to do is play with the mentality that we always have and hopefully it will put us through. One of the things I always say is that Honduras-Costa Rica is always a type of derby. We expect a great game.”

Leandro Damião´s Internacional exit in doubt

Leandro Damião’s proposed move to Napoli is in doubt as Internacional’s main replacement Nilmar looks set to remain at Qatari club Al-Rayyan.

The 23-year-old has long been linked with a move to Europe, with Tottenham coming close to signing him during the January transfer window.

Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis revealed on Wednesday that the club are currently in negotiations with the Brazilian club over a transfer.

However, the deal has hit a snag as Internacional believe that their own target Nilmar, is not likely to leave the Middle East, as reported on Football Italia.

"If Al-Rayyan are able to hold on to Nilmar, then we will do the same with Damião," sporting director Cesar Luis Souto de Moura told Radio Guaiba.

Russian outfit Zenit St. Petersburg are also reportedly interested in the young forward and are expected to make an offer this week.

Brazil´s international transfer window closes on July 20, meaning Internacional need to conclude their business with foreign clubs quickly or wait until January.

Marquinhos to PSG deal completed - report

Reports in Italy claim that Marquinhos´ transfer from Roma to PSG was officially completed on Wednesday evening and should be announced imminently.

La Corriere dello Sport suggests that a deal has been agreed between the two clubs to sign the player for a total sum of €35 million, including add-ons.

Roma stand to make a sizable profit on a player they signed from Corinthians last summer for just €7m.

The publication says that the deal was closed by Roma officials Walter Sabatini and Mauro Baldissoni in Rome last night.

They also claim that PSG had to fend off a late move by Barcelona who are also reportedly targeting Thiago Silva.

Marquinhos is now set to travel to Paris to complete the deal and potentially line up alongside compatriot and PSG captain Silva.

Silva also recently dispelled doubts over his future by insisting that he will be honouring the remainder of his contract.

Learn from your mistakes

Two weeks ago, I wrote about how Cuca failed in his approach to Atlético-MG’s semi-final first leg away to Newell’s Old Boys. He instructed his team to play deeper than usual, abandoning their usual attacking style and shape in an attempt to stymie their opponent’s effectiveness. Their attempt failed and Atlético lost 2-0.

Excellent coaches learn from their mistakes. Cuca is not yet an excellent coach.

In last night’s first leg in Asunción, once again Atlético forsook their usual game-plan to try and hinder their opponents, and once again they lost 2-0.

Their downfall last night against Olimpia was in their insistence on man marking. Cuca’s Atlético always mark their opponents individually, which is often frowned upon at the top level but can be effective when one team has a clear technical advantage.

So far in this year’s Copa Libertadores, Atlético have faced teams that play variants of 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, which suit Atlético’s marking style. The full-backs deal with the wide midfielders or attackers and vice-versa, while the central players each have an opponent to watch over. However, against Olimpia’s staggered 3-4-1-2 shape, Atlético ran into some problems.

http://ilikefootballme.f…ia-galo.jpg

Without a full-back to play against, Cuca moved speedy winger Luan into a central role to cover Olimpia’s Wilson Pittoni, which changed Atlético´s overall shape into a rough 4-4-2 diamond. Left-back Richarlyson was assigned to mark Alejandro Silva, who despite originating in a wide position, constantly cut inside and took Richarlyson with him.

On the other flank, Atlético’s Marcos Rocha was given a huge job, marking Olimpia wing-back Nelson Benítez whilst also being on hand to cover the runs of Matías Giménez and Fredy Bareiro whenever they broke past their markers. As a result, Marcos Rocha rarely crossed the half-way line.

As if being forced to play an entirely different wasn’t enough, Atlético’s man-marking also resulted in Olimpia’s first goal. In the build-up, Alejandro Silva comes deep away from his marker and receives the ball close to Luan, who tries to retrieve possession from him. Instead of covering Luan, Richarlyson moves infield to mark Pittoni, who Luan has abandoned, opening space for Silva to run into. Diego Tardelli tries to close him down, but realising he is leaving his own man in space he hesitates to make a tackle. Réver, the only “spare man” in Atlético’s system, is then slow to get to Silva, allowing the Olimpia midfielder to score.

If that was difficult to follow, this video may help:

http://www.youtube.com/w…l85DR1Sov_I

Persisting with a man marking system and abandoning their usual style of play was a mistake by Cuca, but the popular media will probably focus more on another one of his decisions last night: substituting Ronaldinho after 65 minutes.

Cuca was completely right to take off Ronaldinho. Thanks to a wonderful marking job by Eduardo Aranda (like Newell’s Diego Mateo in the semi-final), Gaúcho barely saw the ball. After his departure, Atlético started to create more and although they eventually conceded a second goal, they improved significantly.

Once again, Atlético will have to do it the hard way and come back from 2-0 down if they want to win their first Copa Libertadores trophy. They will be without Marcos Rocha after he picked up a third yellow card, and as the match will be played at the Mineirão, they will not be able to count on the “Independência” factor.

Coming back from this result will be a much tougher test than the semi-final. But that’s not to say it is impossible.

Independiente look to first season in second tier

Split between club president and fans

18 July ~ It´s starting to feel almost as if historic relegations are becoming commonplace in Argentina. Two years on from River Plate´s drop into the second tier, another of Argentina´s "Big Five" have gone down – and like River in 2011, it´s their first ever relegation. Independiente will be playing in the B Nacional next season. Only AC Milan and fellow Argentinians Boca Juniors have won more international trophies than Independiente, whose seven Copas Libertadores is a competition record. The 2013-14 season will be a big step down for one of the world´s most trophy-laden clubs.

The degree of public shock at Independiente´s relegation hasn´t been quite the same as it was when River went down – they collapsed late in the season in 2011, while Independiente´s fate already seemed all but certain with about ten matches to play. There´s also the difference in size between the clubs to consider. Independiente may be one of the country´s bigger clubs but River and Boca tower over the others to such an extent that there´s little comparison in terms of the amount of media coverage now compared with two years ago.

Relegation has brought trouble for the club at an institutional level: president Javier Cantero has been in a stand off with the club´s barra brava since he was voted in in late 2010. Some barras are no more than glorified hooligan gangs but many are more like mafia organisations. Cantero´s war on Independiente´s barra, combined with the team´s woeful form in the last three years (Argentina´s relegation system involves averaging out points won over the last three seasons, not just the last one), has given the violent element of their support – and Cantero´s political opponents – the perfect excuse to get more vicious.

Two weeks ago, at a meeting of club members and directors, security staff allowed barras and opponents into the hall in which Cantero was due to give a statement – the club president was then bombarded with objects ranging from cigarette lighters to chairs when he got up to speak. Among those opponents, and supporting the barra´s violent actions, was Hugo Moyano, the leader of Argentina´s largest and most powerful trade union. He is currently in the midst of a major disagreement not just with Cantero but also with the president of the nation, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner – politics are never far below the surface in Argentinian football.

Back on the pitch, the pressure will be on next season. Plenty of fans, remembering how competitive the B was during the season River were down there, will be cautious in their predictions. But with River having eventually come back to the Primera at the first time of asking by winning the division, albeit on the last day, Independiente fans will be hoping for the same outcome.

It won´t be straightforward, since next season´s second tier looks competitive and Independiente haven´t been able to benefit from quite the same pull on former heroes or World Cup-winning boyhood fans that led to Fernando Cavenaghi, Alejandro Domínguez and – halfway through 2011-12 – Buenos Aires-raised David Trézéguet to pull on the club´s shirt. What´s more, when River went down thanks to Argentina´s three-year-long system, they´d actually just finished the 2010-11 season eighth in the top flight, Independiente have just ended up 17th.

They have got a lot more to work on than River did, and the barra seem to be doing their best to ensure that there will be a fair share of off-pitch distractions as well. The majority of Independiente fans, though, will be coming into the new season with cautious optimism. After the club´s recent travails, surely the only way is up.
