Et stykke fodboldkultur er tilbage.....

NY Cosmos return with a bang

The New York Cosmos have won their first match in almost 30 years, overcoming Fort Lauderdale Strikers 2-1 in a dramatic finish.

In front of a capacity home crowd of 11,929 at Hofstra University´s Shuart Stadium, Alessandro Noselli scored in second-half stoppage time to snag victory for the Cosmos.

The Cosmos went into half-time with a 1-0 lead after Peri Marosevic´s goal but the visitors from Fort Lauderdale looked to have secured a point in the North American Soccer League (NASL) thanks to Walter Restrepo´s 73rd-minute header.

But Noselli, who had missed a chance to double the hosts´ lead just before Restrepo scored, made amends just before the final whistle, getting his head to a poor back pass from a Strikers´ defender and sending the ball into the net to spark wild celebrations.

The Cosmos, who had not played since 1984, were the figurehead team of the United States in the 1970s with the likes of Pele, Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbauer playing for the New York-based side.

Alberto and Pele were on-hand for the official start of re-formed Cosmos and the former made it clear the club has no plans to be a short-term entity like its predecessor.

"We´re thrilled with the return of the Cosmos and if not this year, very soon were going to have the same kind of team we had before," Alberto said.

"The most important thing for people to know is we´re not here to play games.

"We´re here to really seriously play this game hard."

The Cosmos´ opening goal-scorer, Marosevic, conceded there will be high expectations on the inaugural squad.

"We know we´re going to have pressure on us," Marosevic said.

"The thing we focus on is playing the game for fun.

"It´s truly an honor to be part of this club and to step on the field and wear that New York Cosmos jersey."

While the Cosmos retain aspirations of playing in the United States top-tier, the MLS, they have made it clear they are happy to bide their time and build in the second-tier NASL until then.

The Cosmos´ next game is against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on August 10.

Så præsterede Juventus så en "Santos"......

International Champions Cup: Juventus 1 LA Galaxy 3

Los Angeles Galaxy have stunned dual-reigning Serie A champions Juventus 3-1 in front of a vocal home crowd at the International Champions Cup.

The Galaxy took a deserved lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Omar Gonzalez delicately chipped Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon but the visitors from Turin equalised soon through Alessandro Matri.

But, as the local fans at Dodger Stadium got more excited after half-time, the hosts hit the front again thanks to a goal from captain Landon Donovan and although the Galaxy rode their luck, they held on for a famous win with Robbie Keane adding a late third goal.

After some early nerves on Saturday, the Galaxy got on top with Donovan and Robbie Rogers producing a flurry of goal-scoring chances for LA.

Donovan was tripped from behind inside the D at the top of the penalty area, while Rogers played a one-two with his captain before stabbing his shot wide.

The winners of the past two MLS Cups continued to pour forward with Donovan forcing a top save out of Buffon in the 10th minute, while on the quarter-hour mark, Rogers got free on the left-hand side of the box but his shot was deflected away for a corner.

Galaxy hit the front in the 36th minute when Rogers linked with Juninho before the latter fired a pass through Juventus´ defence to the galloping defender Gonzalez, who lifted the ball over the onrushing Buffon.

LA were flying but Juventus stunned the home side three minutes later when Matri, who had missed two chances in the opening five minutes, slammed home the loose ball from close range after Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe had saved Fabio Quagliarella´s effort.

The score at 1-1 until the break and seven minutes after half-time the home fans were screaming for a penalty after Rogers was bundled over in the box but the referee ignored the pleas.

The Galaxy forgot that disappointment on the hour mark when Marcelo Savas knocked the ball away from Arturo Vidal in Juventus´ defensive half, allowing Keane to take possession and the Irish forward set up Donovan for a simple tap-in.

While Juventus should have had a penalty with 14 minutes remaining for Savas´ clear trip on Sebastian Giovinco, Galaxy completed a well-earned victory in the 89th minute when Keane pounced on Andrea Pirlo´s short back-pass and flicked the ball with the outside of his right boot past Buffon and into the bottom corner of the net.

Introducing… the newly promoted sides

The season has started and I realised that I had not written anything about the 3 sides that were promoted to the Primera Division this season. So here is the quick guide to Rosario Central, Gimnasia La Plata and Olimpo….

Club Atlético Rosario Central

Promoted back to the top flight as champions of the Nacional B, Rosario Central take up their rightful place in Argentina’s top flight. One of the oldest and biggest sides in Argentina, the Primera Division is a better place for their involvement. They bring a rich history, some of the best supporters in the country and one of the fiercest rivalries – the Rosario clasico with Newell’s will be one to be be missed!

Founded in 1889 by a group of railway workers from the British-owned, Central Argentine Railway the Rosario based employees formed the club, led by the club’s first president, Colin Bain Bader. Several championships followed in the amateur era before the game went professional in 1931. Since then they have claimed 4 league titles, most recently in the 1986-87 season, making them one of the most successful clubs outside Buenos Aires.

Famous for their fanatical supporters, the fans still celebrate their victory over rivals Newell’s in 1971 in an annual ceremony, worshipping former player, Aldo Poy and his diving header.

So, what to expect from this season?

Rosario were promoted as champions but have not wasted any time in revamping the squad in preparation for the rigours of top flight football. A whole host of players have left and some useful acquisitions have been made. River striker, Carlos Luna arrived late in the window and could strike up a partnership with fellow signing, Franco Niell. In addition, Rosario snapped up released Boca pair, Pol Fernandez and Lisandro Magallan and also signed useful Tigre centre back, Alejandro Donatti. A team fit for top flight football is being formed and as a result Rosario Central should comfortably secure enough points to retain their status in the division.

Keep an eye on the weekend of 18-20 October for the Rosario clasico!

Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata

Another of Argentina’s oldest and historical clubs and also with a fierce rivalry of one of the existing Primera clubs – Estudiantes. Gimnasia finished second in the Nacional B, but had the best attack in the league.

An upper class sports club formed in 1887, primarily, as the name suggests, for gymnastics and fencing. Football followed, and was later dropped, causing the creation of Estudiantes, and then again reintroduced to the club. Despite this long history, Gimnasia are not particularly successful, with only 1 championship to their name, back in the amateur era in 1929. For this reason, even this solitary achievement is often overlooked and discounted as it was pre-professional football.

So, what to expect this season?

Well, as a promoted side things could be tough. However, Gimnasia are better equipped than some and could well hold their own. With a challenge out of the question only survival is important and that is an achievable target given the resources.

As I said, Gimnasia were top scorers in the Nacional B, in part due to the exploits of striker, Franco Neill but he has signed for competitors, Rosario Central. Despite this set back, Gimnasia have signed well – Neill’s replacement comes in the form of Ivan Borghello who signed from All Boys. His team mate from All Boys, Maxi Coronel joins him, in addition to Gaston Diaz from Velez and Juan Pablo Rodriguez from UNAM in Mexico.

Keep an eye on the weekend of September 20-22 as Gimnasia take on Estudiantes

Club Olimpo

By far and away the smallest side in the Primera Division, the Bahia Blanca based side will enjoy their time back in the top flight but an extended stay could be a tough ask. Olimpo’s promotion was based around their solid defence, the best in the Nacional B, but that will be tested to the limit over the course of the next year.

Formed in 1910 and with no major honours to their name, there is not a great deal to write about the history of Olimpo. 3 second tier titles, last in the Primera 2 years ago where they beat Boca in La Bombonera for the first time. Erm…a small stadium well out of Buenos Aires and they play in yellow and black. That’s all I can manage. (apologies to any Olimpo fans)

So, what to expect this season?

Olimpo too, have let a number of players leave prior to this season and brought in some more experienced faces. Cristian Trombetta, Matias Sarulyte, Martin Perez Guedes, Gustavo Oberman, Fernando Meza and Paulo Rosales will all add something but it could still be a long and difficult season for the Aurinegro.

Anything out of the relegation places would be a great achievement for Olimpo but it is difficult to see where the sufficient number of points is going to come from. Finished third in the Nacional B and are probably weaker than their other two promoted rivals.

There you have it, a little bit on the newcomers. Good luck to all 3 sides as they kick off on Sunday.

Toluca prepares for battles on two fronts

TOLUCA, Mexico -- The Jose Cardozo-era at Toluca has yielded varied results in the first three rounds of the 2013 Mexican Apertura. Under the guidance of the former Diablos Rojos legend, who was named head coach in May, the 10-time champion is 1-1-1. It has been shutout twice, including a goalless draw at home against Pumas on Wednesday.

Things don’t get much easier as a Saturday trip to the Estadio Tecnologico to face three-time CONCACAF Champions League winner Monterrey approaches.

“Right now any opponent is strong in Mexican soccer, but obviously games have been close every time we go to Tecnologico and this time it will not be an exception,” said striker Isaac Brizuela. “Monterrey comes from less to more and it will be a very close match, but with arrivals from both teams, either team could take the win.”

The last time the two sides met in league play was April 7, with Toluca posting a 1-0 road win, thanks to a 71st minute goal by Juan Carlos Cacho.

Monterrey, meanwhile, has struggled in Liga MX, winless in its first three matches. The Rayados opened the season with a 1-0 loss at Cruz Azul and played Puebla to a 1-1 draw at home. On Wednesday, Monterrey had a pair of two-goal leads at Queretaro, before conceding two goals in a two-minute span in the second half to settle for a 3-3 draw.

“I think it hurts to stay in the moment, but football has many rematches and on this day [they] probably already talked about what happened there will be another meeting Saturday,” said Brizuela, who returns to the club after a one-year loan to Atlas. “You want to remove the thorn of the draw, which will not be easy. We have to prepare well.”

Success Saturday at Monterrey is important because Toluca will open its CONCACAF Champions League slate against Trinidad & Tobago’s Caledonia AIA on Tuesday at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Toluca was drawn into Group 6, which also features Guatemalan powerhouse Comunicaciones.

This is Toluca’s third Champions League journey and in each of its previous two appearances, the club was knocked out by the eventual champions – Pachuca in the 2009-10 semifinals and Monterrey in the 2010-11 quarterfinals.

Toluca qualified for the Champions League by finishing as runner-up to Club Tijuana in the 2012 Mexican Apertura.

“These are goals we set personally and in the group, returning to a league that Toluca deserves [to be in],” Brizuela added. “As for the two tournaments, I think we have the team for those two tournaments, a competitive squad and a coach thinking of doing the alignments. But we are ready physically.”

LIGA POSTOBON CLAUSURA: FRIDAY 3RD AUGUST 2013

WEEK 2 – Friday 3rd August 2013

Just the one game last night/early this morning where Cali and Chicó shared the points, but the game was marred by an horrific injury to Luis Fernando Mosquera in the warm-up.

DEPORTIVO CALI 1-1 BOYACÁ CHICÓ

Leonel Alvarez will be frustrated that he side failed to defeat Chicó at home, especially when last week they gained a fantastic 3-0 away win at Once Caldas. But in fairness, it was an even game and both sides deserved to take home the point.

Before the game, Cali was hit with a blow when Mosquera went down while partaking in the pre-match warm-up. It was later revealed by club doctor Gustavo Portela that the new signing from Nacional had suffered a partial rupture of the Achilles tendon, and that the player will be out of action for at least twelve months.

Inside a packed Monumental de Palmaseca, the home side found themselves in the lead after 15 minutes, Miguel Murillo scoring his second goal in as many games. He can thank Sergio Romero for a great surging run to create the goal. Romero picked up the ball midway through his own half, sped past two defenders and placed the ball at Murillo’s feet. The 19-year-old striker had time to control and fire home past goalkeeper Andres Saldarriaga, some poor defending by the Chicó guard. Murillo has been really impressive in the last two games and looks a star in the making.

The visitors grabbed an equaliser against the run of play just after the half-hour mark with a goal from Jairo Castilllo. A mix-up in the Cali midfield gave the ball away into the path of Cristian Alessandrini, the midfielder found Castillo with a defence splitting through ball and Castillo sidestepped 41-year-old goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon and sent the ball trickling into the corner of the goal.

After a disappointing scoreless draw in the Boyacá derby last weekend, Chicó and coach Alberto Gamero will be thankful for this point.

WEEK 2 – Saturday 4th August 2013

ITAGÜÍ DITAIRES 1-0 ATLÉTICO HUILA

Itagui failed to get going until Huila lost Jéfferson Lerma and Luis Páez to red cards deep inside the second-half. The 35-year-old Javier López grabbed the only goal of the game, an first-time effort from the edge of the box that gave Williams Buenaños no chance of saving in the Huila goal.

PATRIOTAS BOYACÁ 1-1 DEPORTIVO PASTO

After intercepting the ball in midfield, 19-year-old Steven Murillo launched a ball forward towards Danilo Moreno Asprilla. Even though he had three defenders and a goalkeeper to contend with, Asprilla beautifully finished the goal to give his side the lead on 16 minutes.

Some poor defending from the home side lead to equalising goal in the 35th minute. A ball was whipped into the area by Fausto Obeso and after a double save from goalkeeper Nicolás Vikonis, Wilson Galeano was there to tap home the rebound.

No other goals came and it was a fair result, even though it was not an excepted one.

JUNIOR 1-0 ONCE CALDAS

Once Caldas’ poor run continues as they fell to a single goal, courtesy of Junior, on early Sunday morning.

The hosts were in front after just 15 minutes thanks to a Luis Carlos Ruiz scrappy goal. Some excellent pressing by Edwin Cardona down the left flank created the goal as his final shot was deflected out by goalkeeper Jose Fernando Cuadrado. The ball spun high into the air where Michael Ortega flung an acrobatic effort towards the goal where Ruiz nodded it home.

That makes it two wins out of two for Junior, and no goals and a double defeat for Once Caldas.

ATLÉTICO NACIONAL 1-1 SANTA FE

Quickly becoming the ‘kings of the late goals’ Nacional did it again and this time against Santa Fe, the team they conquered to win the Apertura championship last month.

We had to wait until 15 minutes remaining in the 90 for the opening goal, a Santa Fe penalty powerfully converted from Argentine striker Silvio González.

The late equaliser was inexcusable from the Santa Fe defenders. Twenty-two-year-old striker Wilder Guisao was unmarked a planted an easy header past Camilo Vargas to score, after a free-kick was sent into the area by Juan David Valencia.

Independiente begin life in the B with defeat

Relegation out of the top flight was disastrous and since then the supporters of Independiente have let their feelings known to the board. River Plate suffered a similar fate in 2011 but bounced straight back to the Primera Division as champions, for Independiente, however, it appears it may be a little more difficult. Yesterday’s game at home to minnows, Brown de Adrogue, on paper, should have been a gentle start to life in the B. Instead, Brown obtained their first ever win in the Nacional B in their debut at Independiente’s stadium.

The game itself was reminiscent of Independiente in the top flight, as they struggled to open up many meaningful opportunities and defended woefully. It was an Independiente youth product, Martin Fabro that opened the scoring when he found himself in space and from an acute angle fired his shot into the far corner.

It didn’t take too long for El Rojo to draw level thanks to arguably some generous referring. New signing, Martin Zapata burst down the right and tangled with a defender prompting the referee to point to the spot. Up stepped, Captain, Rolfi Montenegro and he thumped the ball past Matias Giordano. Before half time both sides were reduced to 10 men as Martin Zapata clashed with Gustavo Diaz off the ball.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Independiente having more possession but always looking very susceptible on the break. And so it came as no surprise when Matias Sproat poked home from close range to give Brown de Adrogue a historic victory.

Jeers and whistles greeted the full time whistle and if Independiente do not improve it is going to be a long, long season.

Pratto gives Velez winning start while its all square in Saturday’s other games

A wonder strike and an injury time penalty from Lucas Pratto ensured Velez Sarsfield started their Torneo Campaign with 3 points. Tigre perhaps deserved more and if wasn’t for some wasteful finishing would have got that. Neither side were particularly happy with the officials but Velez will be relieved with the 2-1 scoreline. Earlier, in Floresta, All Boys were denied an opening day victory thanks to Diego Vera’s fabulous late strike for Atletico Rafaela. Later, Colon and Racing drew 1-1 in Santa Fe. Bruno Zuculini gave Racing an early lead after 2 minutes but it was cancelled out by Jacobo Mansilla in the 25th minute and remained that way.

ALL BOYS 1 – 1 ATLETICO RAFAELA

Mauro Matos headed All Boys in front in the first half, taking advantage of some rather suspect goalkeeping from Esteban Conde in the Rafaela goal. That looked like it was going to be the difference until the 87th minute when Diego Vera took a touch on the edge of the box before rifling his half volley into the corner, in the process depriving new All Boys manager, Julio Cesar Falcioni a debut victory.

http://www.youtube.com/w…XRHhSZ45ZUQ

TIGRE 1 – 2 VELEZ SARSFIELD

Velez were unable to field new signing, Mauro Zarate as his paperwork with the AFA was still not completed but they found a different match winner in the form of Lucas Pratto. A pretty even affair, both sides had missed some glorious chances in the first half came to life after 53 minutes when Pratto scored the goal of the weekend so far. His curling shot from outside the box was too much for Javier Garcia, in the Tigre goal.

However, the lead didn’t last long as less than 10 minutes later Tigre were awarded a fairly contentious penalty. A slight shove by Velez defender, Juan Sabia prompted new signing, Jose Sand to collapse in a heap. Velez were outraged resulting in Manager, Ricardo Gareca to be sent to the stands but it mattered little as Gaston Diaz fired Tigre level.

Tigre then probably had the better chances to win it but their failure to do so was punished in injury time. Ramiro Caseres was adjudged to have been tripped as he chased a ball over the top and Pratto stepped up to ensure the victory.

http://www.youtube.com/w…CE1cxGgK6nQ

COLON 1 – 1 RACING

Racing are somewhat of a bogey-team for Colon, having been beaten the previous 3 occasions the sides have met in Santa Fe, and it looked as though the hoodoo would continue when Bruno Zuculini’s diving header put Racing ahead after just 2 minutes. However, Colon were not discouraged and were level after 25 minutes when Jacobo Mansilla rose at the back post to nod him a deep cross from the right.

The game stayed that way as neither side looked to have the quality to deserve the victory. Racing’s young side will need to improve if they have genuine title aspirations and they will be concerned to have seen striker, Luciano Vietto limp off with an ankle injury in the second half.
