Chen, rising Panama star, joins Malaga

MÁLAGA, SPAIN – After standout performances in Panama’s run to the final of the recently completed CONCACAF Gold Cup, defender Roberto Chen has made the leap to Europe. The 19-year-old left San Francisco FC to join Malaga in Spain on a four-year contract after the two sides agreed to a $500,000 transfer last week.

He becomes the second Panamanian to play for Malaga, following in the footsteps of current national team head coach Julio César Dely Valdes, who scored 38 goals in 104 games for the Malaguistas.

“I am happy to have this opportunity, I am going to give it my all, it’s not just about getting there [to Malaga], but to make a name for myself and for Panama,” said Chen. “Everything started up after the Gold Cup where they had been observing me, before there weren’t any offers [for me] except Seattle’s, until this opportunity came up.”

Despite his young age – as well as last month’s God Cup -- Chen has appeared in numerous CONCACAF competitions. He first burst on to the regional scene with a series eye-opening outings in the 2011 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, leading Panama to a third-place finish and a berth at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

Only a few months later, a 16-year-old Chen played in each of Panama’s five games at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. He appeared again in the competition two years later, scoring one goal in three matches.

Additionally, he was on the field for every minute of San Francisco’s 2011-12 Champions League preliminary round games against the Seattle Sounders -- a 1-0 win at home and a 2-0 extra-time loss on the road.

The new Malaga man debuted for the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League quarterfinalist in a 3-2 friendly loss at England’s Aston Villa on Saturday. He played the final 76 minutes, entering the game as a substitute for the injured Weligton. Despite having made his first appearance earlier than expected, the moment was not too big for Chen who felt satisfied with his play.

“I’m happy with my debut; in general the team’s work-rate has been good and mine as well. There is still a lot left to improve but I’ve given the team the confidence that they can count on me,” said Chen following the game.

Malaga opens its league season on Saturday against host Valencia.

Klinsmann reveals U.S. roster for Bosnia friendly

CHICAGO – United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann unveiled a 23-player roster on Monday for a training camp in advance of an August 14 away friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo.

With the exception defender Brad Evans and forward Eddie Johnson, both with U.S. club Seattle Sounders, the roster is composed entirely of European- and Mexican-based players.

“This is another opportunity to give ourselves a benchmark against a great opponent and one of the top teams in Europe,” said Klinsmann. “Our European-based players are just getting started with their seasons and this gives them a chance to get going a couple weeks before our big World Cup Qualifiers. We’re also excited to bring some new faces into the Senior Team and have them start to become part of the group.”

The U.S. is currently riding a record-setting 11-match winning streak that began June 2 with a 4-3 victory over Germany. The streak includes three wins in World Cup Qualifying and six straight victories en route to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship last month.

The first-ever encounter with Bosnia is the only match for the U.S. before the resumption of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying with matches at Costa Rica on September 6 in San Jose and home against Mexico four days later at a sold-out Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

Mexico names roster for Ivory Coast friendly

MEXICO CITY – Mexico announced on Friday the roster for its August 14 friendly against Ivory Coast at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA.

The 20-player selection is highlighted by the inclusion of 24-year-old Giovani Dos Santos, who recently joined Spain’s Villarreal after spending a season with Mallorca. The attacker played in all three of El Tri’s games at the FIFA Confederations Cup in June.

Head coach Jose Manuel de la Torre also selected four players – defender Miguel Layun, midfielder Luis Montes, plus forwards Marco Fabian and Raul Jimenez – who competed for Mexico during July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. The six-time tournament champion advanced to the semifinals before falling to Panama, 2-1.

Javier Hernandez, Mexico’s top scorer in 2014 World Cup Qualifying with five goals, will miss the match with a sore right hamstring.

The encounter against the 2012 African Cup of Nations runner-up is the last for the Tricolor before it faces visiting Honduras in the CONCACAF Hexagonal on September 6. Mexico currently sits in third with one win and five draws in games, five points behind table-toping United States.

Dominican Republic picks strong roster, prepares for Costa Rica

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – The Dominican Republic Football Federation (FEDOFUTBOL) held a press conference Thursday at the Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo, site of the country’s international friendly against Costa Rica on August 14.

The stadium, used traditionally for baseball, will host its first-ever international football match, after an accord was reached between FEDOFUTBOL and stadium authorities. The agreement establishes a strategic alliance that will allow the facility to be utilized for football development when there is no baseball activity.

For more than 13 years, the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal has been the primary venue for the Dominican Republic’s home internationals at multiple levels and age groups. According to FIFA records, the last time that Santo Domingo – the nation’s capital – welcomed the men’s national team was on June 13, 2004, when it lost 2-0 to Trinidad & Tobago at the Estadio Olimpico in a World Cup qualifier for Germany 2006.

The match against Costa Rica and its location are positive steps in the Caribbean nation’s football progression. The men’s national team has moved up to 86th in the most recent FIFA rankings, a position that is good for 9th in CONCACAF. Last year’s run to the final round of the Caribbean Cup – the sub-region’s qualifying tournament for the CONCACAF Gold Cup -- was another sign that the program was heading in an upward trajectory.

At the heart of it all, though, is the matter of players and their development. The Dominican Republic’s 21-man roster for Wednesday consists of 14 players based abroad, including Swiss-born Heinz Batmettler. The 26-year-old central defender has one cap for Switzerland, but switched his FIFA nationality last year. He recently signed with Spanish La Liga side Real Valladolid.

Jonathan Faña Farias, also 26, has been a standout in CONCACAF for more than seven years. He currently plays for Alianza in El Salvador after very successful stints with the Puerto Rico Islanders and Trinidad & Tobago’s W Connection. The forward has seven career CONCACAF Champions League goals (five for W Connection, 2 for the Puerto Rico Islanders) and has netted three times in eight all-time World Cup Qualifying matches.

Goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd is playing with Arabe Unido and helped the Panamanian side to a 3-1 win over W Connection in a CONCACAF Champions League match on Thursday.

Another player to watch is Cayetano Bonnin, who has been on the books with Spanish teams Mallorca, Real Madrid and Valencia. Though he has never played in a La Liga match, the central defender, 23, did make his full international debut for the Dominican Republic in a 3-1 friendly triumph over Haiti earlier this year.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ROSTER

(August 14, 2013 – home v Costa Rica)

GOALKEEPERS: Wellington Agramonte (Aiglé Noir/Haiti), Miguel Lloyd (Arabe Unido/Panama)

DEFENDERS: Johan de la Cruz (Bayaguana), Cesar Garcia (Bayamón/Puerto Rico), Hansley Martínez (Aiglé Noir/Haiti), Israel Ruiz (San Cristobal), Cayetano Bonnin (Valencia/Spain), Angel Luis Milano (San Cristobal)

MIDFIELDERS: Heinz Batmettler (Real Valladolid/Spain), Rafael Flores (Tempete/Haiti), Salcedo Francisco Ubiera (Orlando Tech/United States), Jean Carlos Lopez (Moca), Carlos Julio Martinez (Villarreal/Spain), Pedro Núñez (Deportivo Pantoja), Inoel Navarro (Escuela Bauger), Kerbi Rodríguez (Moca), Jimmy Reyes (Deportivo Pantoja)

FORWARDS: Domingo Peralta (Violette/Haiti), Jonathan Fana Farias (Alianza/El Salvador), Erick Ozuna (Moca), Samuel Lustenberger (SC Scham/Switzerland)
