Riquelme runs to Bianchi to celebrate the opening goal in last night’s victory

A Sunday which saw several of Argentina’s heavyweights in action produced some interesting results. Boca Juniors bounced back from their defeat earlier in the week to defeat Atletico Rafaela in La Bombonera, kickstarted by Juan Roman Riquelme’s indirect freekick and finished by a fine team move, Boca look to be improving. Later, River Plate dropped more points as they produced a goalless draw in Mendoza with Godoy Cruz. With Teo Gutierrez still not able to play River look woefully short up top and lack any real edge. Newell’s Old Boys and Belgrano were also unable to produce any goals when they met in Rosario mainly thanks to the performance of Belgrano keeper, Juan Olave. In the remaining game, Racing were comfortably beaten by Tigre perhaps edging Manager, Luis Zebeldia towards the exit door. Boca loanee, Sergio Araujo scored twice before Racing flop, Jose Sand rubbed salt into the wound. Rodrigo De Paul managed a consolation but the end could be nigh for Zubeldia.

CONCACAF Champions League Preview: Cruz Azul start against Herediano

Five-time CONCACAF Champions League winners Cruz Azul begin their 2013-14 campaign by taking on Herediano on Thursday.

The Mexican club, who are present by virtue of their runner-up finish in the 2013 Clausura, remain the joint-most successful club in the history of North America´s premier cup competition.

But they have not tasted success in the tournament since 1997, and will be keen to get off to a good start when they host the reigning Costa Rican champions - who beat Valencia 6-1 in their first game.

Another Mexican side, two-time champions Toluca, are also in action on Thursday, as they travel to take on Comunicaciones of Guatemala at Estadio Cementos Progreso hoping to follow up their 3-1 win over Caledonia AIA.

Two American teams will get their campaigns under way in the latest round of fixtures, with LA Galaxy taking on Cartagines at the Stubhub Center, while Houston Dynamo face W Connection in Trinidad and Tobago.

The other Major League Soccer representatives have been drawn together in Group 5, but San Jose Earthquakes will be unable to bounce back from their defeat to Montreal Impact as they sit out while the Canadian side face Heredia of Guatemala.

Elsewhere, Sporting San Miguelito of Panama and Nicaragua´s Real Esteli need to recover from losing their first matches when they face Alajuelense and Olimpia respectively.

And Olimpia´s fellow Hondurans Victoria meet Tijuana of Mexico at Estadio Municipal Celibeno Nilmo.

Tijuana’s Garza overcomes adversity, finds a home

TIJUANA, Mexico -- Greg Garza doesn’t waste chances. The Club Tijuana defender understands that opportunities are scarce. He makes the best of what life offers.

With the Xolos, Garza has found a home not only on the pitch, but in life. The 22-year-old is one of the team’s up-and-coming bright spots, becoming a “go-to” guy for specific match-ups.

That includes the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL). Garza could be in head coach Jorge Almiron’s plans for a Group 7 road game against Victoria in La Ceiba, Honduras. It will be Victoria’s competition debut.

In the young season, Garza has seen more playing time in both the LIGA MX and the CCL. He came on as a second-half substitute in Tijuana’s scoreless draw against L.A. Firpo of El Salvador on August 8.

The Dallas, Texas, native doesn’t mind being called into action when starting leftback Edgar Castillo is on international duty with the United States or to fill in for the injured Juan Carlos Nunez.

Every minute on the pitch is golden for Garza. He’s played in Brazil, has been part of US Soccer’s youth residency program and had short stints in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon and Estoril.

Though he was unemployed before coming to Tijuana, he has found peace in the Mexican city.

“I have literally been on a soccer roller coaster. I have had so many high and special moments and have also had very frustrating and sad moments throughout my career,” said Garza, who lives with his wife Tauanna and son Francesco. “I have been put in situations to overcome adversity with not having a club for quite some time and being jobless before coming to the Xolos.

“Family always comes first. Being away from my family is definitely a huge sacrifice, but knowing that they understand and support me no matter what really gives me the strength to do my best. Soccer is what brings me happiness and having my family to give me even more support is what allows me to live a life of absolutely no worries.”

That is why Garza is soaking in all that he can every time he is on the field. Against Firpo in San Salvador, he gave the Xolos a spark, roaming up and down the left flank. On Saturday, the speedy back nearly scored in a 2-1 LIGA MX loss at Monterrey.

“I believe that there are always going to be tough situations for a professional soccer player and even though I have gone through some tough, adverse situations as a very young person and player, I have realized that we cannot take this job or sport that we love for granted. We must take every moment and live it to the max because soccer isn´t something that lasts forever.”

In-form Houston Dynamo travels to Trinidad for CCL tilt

HOUSTON, Texas – Fresh off a solid 3-1 Major League Soccer victory over the Seattle Sounders, the Houston Dynamo open CONCACAF Champions League CCL) play Tuesday on the road against Trinidad’s DIRECTV W Connection at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

The Dynamo is making its second consecutive appearance, and fourth overall, in the region’s club championship by virtue of advancing to the 2012 MLS Cup final. A year ago, Houston reached the CCL quarterfinals, losing to eventual finalist Santos Laguna, 3-1 on aggregate.

An emotional victory on Saturday over the Seattle Sounders, which now features United States international Clint Dempsey, was played in front of a capacity crowd of 22,289 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

“The first 30 minutes were probably the best 30 minutes we’ve played this year,” Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said after the match. “I thought we looked excellent.”

A big reason Kinnear was beaming about the opening half hour was that Giles Barnes gave the Dynamo a 2-0 lead with goals in the 17th and 21st minutes. It was the English forward’s first multi-goal game in MLS.

“It’s always nice to get on the score sheet, but first and foremost your confidence comes from playing well with the team and working hard with them,” Barnes said. “If you work hard, you’ll get your rewards and hopefully that’s what I’m doing. I’m working hard and hopefully the rewards will come.”

After Shalrie Joseph pulled Seattle to within a goal in the 65th minute, Will Bruin netted his sixth tally of the year nine minutes later to clinch the Dynamo’s fourth win in its last six league matches.

“That’s what we’re supposed to do, we’re supposed to score goals,” Bruin said. “I think me and Giles are getting back on the same page that we were at the beginning of the year. That’s going to be dangerous come these last few games.”

While the Dynamo was dangerous in the attacking third, it made sure to stymie Dempsey, a former Fulham and Tottenham standout.

“I think he was getting a little frustrated at the end because he wasn’t getting the ball,” midfielder Adam Moffat said. “He’s a quality player. He’s a good player and will do well for them. We’re happy we got the three points tonight and shut him down.”

On Tuesday, Houston faces a DIRECTV W Connection team looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Arabe Unido on August 8 in Panama City, the first match of Group 1.

Humberto Ward struck for a first-half brace and Jose Gonzalez added a goal in the 53rd minute for Arabe Unido, while Neil Benjamin, an 18-year-old striker, scored the lone goal for the visitors with 14 minutes left in regulation.

Chivas de Guadalajara fire Benjamin Galindo

The managerial instability at Chivas continues. Following a terrible home result that took the Goats down to 15th in the table, Benjamin Galindo was sacked.

Struggling Chivas de Guadalajara have parted ways with head coach Benjamin Galindo following a string of disappointing results. Five games into the season, Chivas sit fourth from bottom in the table with just four points, and a 2-4 home defeat to mid-table Puebla was apparently the final straw, with club chairman Dennis te Kloese making an announcement following the match:

Sorry for taking so long and thanks for your patience. The result has been very negative today here at home to all the people who want to see the team do well. It´s a difficult time, and we have decided that Benjamin [Galindo] will no longer coach Chivas. Tomorrow we will give more information about who will be the new coach.

Galindo´s a good coach, but he´s an easy scapegoat for this current wreck of a side. Whomever the next coach might be -- and seeing as this is Chivas it´s difficult to pin down a favourite at the moment -- they´re likely going to find themselves in a lot of trouble. So it goes with this club.
