Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Leading trio secure victories

Caracas, Mineros de Guayana and Deportivo Anzoategui are all tied on 12 points at the top of the Venezuela Primera Division.

After a 3-0 win at Zulia, Caracas claimed outright first spot on goal difference (plus eight).

Goals to Romulo Otero, Javier Guarino and Rubert Quijada sealed a comprehensive victory for Eduardo Sarago´s men.

While they are holding top spot, Mineros de Guayana (plus seven) still have a game in hand - even after their 2-0 road win over Deportivo Petare.

A Zamir Valoyes brace after just 27 minutes had Mineros two goals to the good, and their clean sheet means they have conceded just once in four matches this term.

Deportivo Anzoategui (plus two) got past Atletico El Vigia 3-1, after goals to Jaime Moreno, Edwin Aguilar and Ronald Giraldo.

Zamora are a point behind the leading trio in fourth, after they were kept to a 0-0 draw at home to Atletico Venezuela.

Winless Trujillanos played out their fourth consecutive draw - a 0-0 stalemate with Estudiantes de Merida.

Yaracuyanos celebrated their first win of the season in dramatic style, with Johan Moreno scoring an 86th-minute winner as they beat Deportivo Lara 1-0.

Deportivo La Guaira also broke through for their first triumph in four, with a 1-0 home result against Llaneros de Guanare.

Deportivo Tachira had some late heroics from Yoandri Orozco to thank for their 2-1 win over Tucanes.

Aragua were denied at home to Carabobo 2-1, with Pablo Olivera´s brace early in the second half earning a valuable three points for his side.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: River win again, Nacional beaten

River Plate won their fourth successive Primera Division match with a solid 2-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

The goals came relatively late for a side that had scored 12 goals in their previous three league matches.

Lucas Olaza got the first on 68 minutes before Leandro Rodriguez rounded things off in injury time with his second goal of the season.

River next head to Nacional, who lost 2-0 on Saturday to Danubio.

Jonatan Alvez and Liber Quinones got both the goals to keep their side in touch with River at the summit.

El Tanque Sisley were fortunate to scrap a 1-1 draw against Cerro Largo. Santiago Lamanna got an equaliser seven minutes from the final whistle after Mauricio Ruiz hit the game´s first goal.

Elsewhere, Defensor Sporting beat Fenix 1-0 at home to make it four successive losses for the division´s bottom club.

Racing nearly came back from three goals down against Penarol but the away side managed to hold on to win 3-2.

Miramar Misiones picked up an unlikely point away at Sud America courtesy of a 0-0 draw and Wanderers´ game with Club Atletico Juventud finished 1-1.

Paraguay Division Profesional Wrap: Sol de America, Olimpia play out thriller

There were goals galore in the Paraguay Division Profesional on the weekend, with six matches producing 22 strikes.

Eight of those came in Sol de America´s 4-4 home draw with Olimpia - a result the hosts salvaged on 88 minutes when Cristian Ovelar equalised against their 10-man opponents in Asuncion.

Sol de America led on 18 minutes, but Olimpia took a stronghold with three goals in the space of 15 minutes to hold a comfortable lead.

The Estadio Defensores del Chaco hosts found parity when Ovelar scored from the spot followed by an Alberto Espinola goal - with a red card to Olimpia´s Juan Ferreyra in between.

However, Alejandro Silva had seemingly won it for Ever Almeida´s men on 79 minutes, when he found the back of the net, only for Ovelar to have the last say with two minutes remaining in normal time.

The brave result for Olimpia saw them snap a three-match losing run, while Sol - fourth on 11 points - fell further out of touch with league leaders Cerro Porteno (20 points).

The top side cruised to a 4-0 win over Deportivo Carapegua, with two goals in each half enough for Francisco Arce´s men.

General Diaz stayed four points behind Cerro Porteno in second, with a 4-0 win of their own over Cerro Porteno PF.

Deportivo Capiata fell to a 3-1 loss away to Nacional Asuncion, who - sitting in fifth on 10 points - have a game in hand on the sides above them.

Asuncion are just one win away from overtaking third-placed Deportivo (13 points).

An early penalty converted by Guarani´s Julio Caceres saw them to a 1-0 win over Libertad, while Sportivo Luqueno triumphed 1-0 on the road at Rubio Nu

Liga de Futbol Profesional Boliviano Wrap: Bolivar move clear

Bolivar went outright top of the Liga de Futbol Profesional Boliviano on the weekend after The Strongest flopped away at Nacional Potosi.

Nacional had a 2-0 win over the second-placed Strongest, taking them within a point of their opponents.

Now fourth, Nacional were fired to the victory by goals to Fernando Martelli and Rodrigo Vargas.

http://www.youtube.com/w…2dQZrNTLak4

Bolivar flexed their muscle with a 4-2 win over Club Universitario, although they did temper an early shock deficit to get the three points.

Universitario led when Ruben Cuesta was on target on 24 minutes, but Juanmi Callejon ensured the league leaders were level just five minutes later.

Jose Luis Capdevilla had Bolivar in front seven minutes after the interval, before William Ferreira´s brace - the first from the penalty spot - had Miguel Angel Portugal´s men 4-1 to the good.

Universitario struck a consolation when Martin Palavicini hit the back of the net.

http://www.youtube.com/w…jtOIKfmTEWA

San Jose claimed honours in an undulating clash with Oriente Petrolero 3-2.

They took a one-goal lead to the interval, only to trail after 63 minutes.

But the home side were back in front 11 minutes later, with Carlos Saucedo and Carlos Neumann scoring three minutes apart to turn the tide back in San Jose´s favour.

http://www.youtube.com/w…jtOIKfmTEWA

Real Potosi produced some remarkable heroics to poach a 2-1 win away at Aurora.

Trailing 1-0 with five minutes to play, Maximiliano Andrada and Nicolas Bubas both struck late to get them off the bottom of the table in the most dramatic fashion.

Aurora replaced them at the foot of the standings.

http://www.youtube.com/w…jtOIKfmTEWA

Guabira snapped a run of four straight defeats with a 2-0 win at Sport Boys, on the back of Miguel Rios´ double.

http://www.youtube.com/w…jtOIKfmTEWA

Blooming earned their first point in four games, although it should have been three as they were pegged back late to a 3-3 draw at home to Wilstermann.

Leading 3-2 in the shadows of the full-time whistle, Wilstermann´s Rodrigo Ramallo fired late to ensure his side remained unbeaten through six.

Wilstermann are fifth on the table, but are the only side in the league yet to lose - after two wins and four consecutive draws.

Chile Primera Division Wrap: Universidad Catolica, Cobreloa stay unbeaten

Universidad Catolica preserved their two-point buffer at the helm of the Chile Primera Division, with a 4-0 win at Huachipato.

It took Martin Lasarte´s league leaders until the hour-mark to crack second-bottom Huachipato, and their first two goals came from the penalty spot.

Milovan Mirosevic converted the first, before Nicolas Castillo doubled the advantage with his spot-kick.

Castillo finished with a brace, before Enzo Andia added Catolica´s fourth as they boosted their already handy goal differential to plus 14.

Cobreloa remain the only other undefeated side in the league, as they kept in touch with Catolica courtesy of a 1-0 triumph at Union Espanola.

Jose Perez struck on 31 minutes, but the second-placed club were forced to hold on with 10 men in the second half when Rene Lima was dismissed with 23 minutes to play.

Prior to the weekend´s action, Audax Italiano were the other unbeaten club but they fell to a 4-3 home loss to Antofagasta.

Audax are 11th, with one win and five draws to their name in seven matches.

O´Higgins bounced back from their first loss of the season at their last start, with a 1-0 home win over Nublense.

Pablo Calandria´s seventh-minute goal ensured O´Higgins maintained third spot in the league, with Deportes Iquique (fourth), Cobresal (fifth), Everton (sixth) and Antofagasta (seventh) all winning.

Deportes had a 2-0 road win over Santiago Wanderers, while Cobresal struck early before holding onto a 1-0 home victory over Universidad de Concepcion.

Everton arrested an early deficit to beat Universidad Chile 2-1, while Colo Colo dismissed Rangers 3-0 on the road and Palestino equalised late in a 1-1 draw at home to Union La Calera.

Peru Primera Division Wrap: Real Garcilaso beaten

Real Garcilaso´s start to their Peru Primera Division second phase campaign went from bad to worse after a 2-0 loss to Cesar Vallejo.

The Group A leaders barely salvaged a draw in their first match of the championship phase, but were humbled on the road at Casagrande - and finished the match with 10 men.

Daniel Chavez and German Alemanno struck for Cesar Vallejo during the second half, before Luis Guadalupe was handed a straight red card in the second minute of added time as Garcilaso´s hold on top spot began to weaken.

Sporting Cristal consolidated second spot in the group, winning 1-0 away at Pacifico to close the gap on Garcilaso to three points.

Cristal´s Joazhino Arroe scored the winner on 11 minutes.

Alianza Lima (third), Cesar Vallejo (fourth) and Sport Huancayo (fifth) all won as the pressure to get to the top increased.

Lima had a 3-0 triumph at home to Union Comercio, with Wilmer Aguirre netting a brace.

Huancayo had Ryan Salazar´s eighth-minute strike against Melgar to thank for a 1-0 result.

In Group B, Universitario and Inti Gas both won, with the former remaining eight points clear top of the division.

Manuel Ruidiaz scored a brace to help Universitario battle back from an early deficit to defeat UTC Cajamarca on the road 2-1.

Inti Gas handled the threat of 10-man Leon de Huanuco 2-0, although it took them until the 90th minute to score the second and secure the three points.

A Josias Cardoso double helped Cienciano get past Jose Galves 2-1, although not after some nervous moments late.

Jersson Vasquez´s goal with eight minutes to play came just before the dismissal of Cienciano´s Enzo Scorza in the 88th minute, but the home side held on one man down.

Rodrigo Cuba fired Juan Aurich to a 1-0 victory over Universidad San Martin.

Ecuador Primera A Wrap: Catolica bounce back, Emelec stumble

Leaders Universidad Catolica bounced back from defeat to dispatch Deportivo Cuenca 3-1 on Saturday.

Catolica, who were beaten 2-1 by El Nacional in the previous game week, hit back positively - going three up within an hour through Diego Benitez, Jorge Cuesta and Andres Mendoza.

Andres Rios pulled a goal back but it was not enough to save Cuenca from a third defeat in five games as Jorge Celico´s men moved three points clear at the summit.

Emelec, Catolica´s nearest rivals, were beaten 2-0 by third-placed El Nacional thanks to goals from Edson Montano in either half.

http://www.youtube.com/w…E7wYkXFGoww

That means the top three are separated by just four points with El Nacional and Emelec set to meet again on Saturday.

At the bottom of the table, Deportivo Quevedo´s search for a win goes on after they were beaten for the seventh time in 10 games - going down 3-1 to Independiente del Valle.

All four goals came in the first 30 minutes, Jonathan Gonzalez, Daniel Angulo and Henry Leon putting the home side comfortably ahead before John Garcia pulled one back for Quevedo.

Macara were unable to pull further away from Juan Urquiza´s men as they suffered a third defeat in a row, losing 3-1 to LDU Quito.

Edison Mendez and Gabriel Corozo put Quito in front and, while Michael Endara pulled one back, Gustavo Bou put to bed any fears of a comeback with a 90th-minute strike, securing Quito´s first win in nine league matches.

LDU Loja scored three for the second consecutive game when beating Manta 3-0, while Barcelona overcame Deportivo Quito 2-1.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Atletico Nacional continue winning ways

Atletico Nacional continued on their merry way in their Colombia Primera A Clausura campaign with a 2-0 win over Medellin.

The Colombian top-flight leaders have seven wins and a draw from eight matches, after most recently silencing 10-man Medellin.

Atletico were fired to victory by first-half goals to Francisco Najera and Jefferson Duque, before John Hernandez was sent off after 62 minutes.

http://www.youtube.com/w…ZdkwT3Qp6Hk

Millonarios slipped up for the second straight week, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by third-placed Santa Fe in an ideal result for Atletico - who have six- and seven-point buffers on the two sides respectively.

Patriotas Boyaca defeated Boyaca Chico 1-0 courtesy of an Amiviled Rivas goal on 25 minutes, while Chico were left to battle with 10 for the final quarter-hour after Julian Carabali was dismissed.

All three goals scored in Deportes Quindio´s 2-1 win over Once Caldas happened four minutes apart, in an extraordinary exchange.

Quindio led on 50 minutes from a Jaime Barreiro goal, only to be pegged back within three minutes via Caldas´ Oscar Rodas.

The rollercoaster did not stop there, though, as Roy Castillo restored the home side´s lead, and the remainder of the contest went goalless to see Quindio to their first victory of the season.

La Equidad smashed Alianza Petrolera 4-0 to go seventh, although they finished with 10 men when Fernando Battiste was sent off late.

Fabian seeks redemption as Chivas tie Xolos

Forget the fireworks and the "Fiesta Mexicana" that Chivas were promoting for Sunday´s independence day game against Xolos, it was Marco Fabian who lit up the Estadio Omnilife.

With the rain falling, Chivas slipping to their fifth defeat of the season and time running out, Fabian laid the ball down and drove a fierce free-kick from 25 meters that Tijuana goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo was helpless to stop.

Just 10 days after asking for forgiveness from Chivas fans for considering leaving the club for Qatar, Fabian effusively kissed the club´s badge in his celebration. It was an act of contrition from a player who has promised he will produce for Chivas and drive them forward.

"I don´t have any more to say about past subjects," said Fabian after the game. "I´m simply going to do my talking on the pitch."

But despite the relief and joy of the equalizer, the 2-2 tie only gives Chivas a point and the Rebano Sagrado now has only one win in its last eight home league games. The playoffs are slipping further away and what remains of the Apertura is becoming more for sorting out the lingering problems in time for next year´s Clausura, even if the club isn´t completely ruling them out.

"Anything can happen in football, if we go on a run and win three consecutive games, we´ll get closer," remarked Fabian. "We have to think that way, of winning the next game and picking up points."

Fabian´s form looks like being a major plus moving forward, but the defense remains a worry, with Tijuana easily ripping Chivas apart on counter-attacks. Only rivals Atlas have conceded more than Chivas, who still have a game in hand to play against Santos Laguna.

The game highlighted the fact Hector Reynoso, Nestor Vidrio and Victor Perales need more time to make the three center back system work, while the wingback positions remain an area of concern for Juan Carlos Ortega in simple terms of not having the personnel to adequately fill those specialist positions.

Elsewhere, Ortega will have been pleased with another solid display from Aldo de Nigris, as well as the fight Chivas showed in midfield against a strong Tijuana team.

Next up for Chivas in the league is a tough trip next Saturday to high-flying Leon, with Atlas the week after in the Omnilife and the national clasico against America in the Estadio Azteca after that. It´s a difficult run for the Rojiblancos, who most likely need at least seven points from those games if this Apertura season isn´t going to be yet another to forget on the field.

Club America still on track despite Santos Laguna loss

Despite a Raul Jimenez goal, Club America fell 2-1 to Santos Laguna.
Though it would be a unique feather in their cap to do something no Liga MX club has ever done before and pull off an undefeated regular season, for Club America it´s probably better to lose early than to lose late.

Last season, Tigres made a serious charge for an unbeaten Liga MX regular season but didn´t quite make it, bowing out of the ensuing playoffs in the first round. Perhaps the quest to be invincible ended up becoming a distraction, or at the least, papered over problems that needed to be resolved before the playoffs. Though the current Apertura season is just over the halfway mark, speculation had been growing that Club America could make a similar run at the unbeaten record. It wasn´t to be, however, as Las Aguilas fell 2-1 to Santos Laguna.

It had looked in the early going like yet another dominant Azulcrema performance, with Raul Jimenez scoring within the first fifteen minutes. Yet after that early goal, Club America relaxed while the Santos Laguna players lived up to their warrior nickname. Goals from star Oribe Peralta and Mauro Cejas in the second-half brought the Eagles back down to earth. Club America is still near the top of Liga MX with 19 points and are in an excellent position to make the playoffs and defend their championship. If the team manages that, it would break a tie with Guadalajara and gain something no club has ever had before - a record 12th title.

The two most famous clubs in Liga MX are not only renowned for the large number of titles that they have won, but also because they are the only two clubs in league history to never have suffered the ignominy of relegation. Unfortunately, while Club America is near the top of Liga MX yet again, Guadalajara is at the opposite end of the standings. It´s become so bad for Chivas that home game draws, like the one the team barely managed to get against Tijuana on Sunday, are celebrated with relief because every single point is so precious. Marco Fabian, at least, is working hard to earn back the trust of Guadalajara fans, contributing a goal and an assist to the team´s effort in Estadio Omnilife.

Though the club never gets as much acclaim as the other two teams, Morelia snuck back to the top of the standings with a 1-0 victory over Pumas. Hector Raul Mancilla was the hero in this encounter, as his goal helped the Monarchs to 20 points on the season.

Victories with the scoreline of 1-0 were the most common results on the weekend, as more than a few players who had contributed to international duty for Mexico seemed a bit tired, or perhaps merely dejected, after Tuesday´s loss to the United States in World Cup qualifying.

Queretaro needed only a single goal to take full points from Atlante, everyone´s favorite punching bag this Liga MX season. Tigres defeated Cruz Azul when a Damian Alvarez pass, like clockwork, found Juninho for the lone goal of the game. Veracruz, who led the league in the early going of the season, are now struggling stay in playoff contention after a 1-0 loss to Leon. Monterrey, meanwhile, claimed its first win of the season under new coach Jose Guadalupe Cruz, versus Pachuca with Neri Cardozo scoring the game´s only goal.

Rising above the games won by the minimum amount, Chiapas F.C. pasted three goals onto hapless Atlas, who have fallen on hard times after having made the playoffs last season. David Toledo, David Mendieta and Luis Alfonso Rodriguez all shared the glory and goalscoring duties for Chiapas.

It looked for all the world like Puebla had their match versus Toluca all sewn up with a goal to Diego Eduardo de Buen, but a goal scored by Alfredo Talavera in the 90th minute left the teams level at the final whistle.

The tight scores in many of the matches indicate that teams are starting to get serious about defense because time is beginning to run out to make the playoffs. Squads at the bottom of the table are pretty hopeless, barring a miracle winning run. Teams near the top will look to consolidate their advantage, keep players healthy and team chemistry clicking. The middle of the table is the messy battlefield where clubs will start kicking and scratching to get to a precious playoff spot. Those battles will get more heated as the playoffs loom ever closer.
