Copa Sudamericana Preview: River Plate, Universidad Chile out to overturn deficits

River Plate and Universidad Chile will try to overturn deficits in the second leg of their round of 16 Copa Sudamericana fixtures this week.

Argentinian giants River will host LDU Loja of Ecuador on Thursday, hoping to recover from a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

Pedro Larrea and Jonny Uchuari scored the goals that gave LDU their win and they will enter the match in impressive form, having notched four wins in the last month.

On the other hand, River Plate are struggling, sitting in the bottom half of their domestic top flight after a patchy run.

This week´s other second leg will see Lanus of Argentina battle with Universidad Chile.

Lanus cruised to a 4-0 home win in the first leg as Lucas Melano scored a double against a side who finished with nine men.

The Chilean outfit have not been in great form either, and Lanus will be expected to proceed comfortably.

The first leg of another five ties will also take place this week, with the headline fixture seeing 2012 winners Sao Paulo of Brazil face Chile´s Universidad Catolica.

The two sides met in the semi-finals last season, with Sao Paulo progressing on away goals after they were locked at 1-1 over two legs.

The Brazilian outfit will host the first leg on Thursday and will be confident after a good run.

Sao Paulo were struggling earlier in the Brazilian Serie A season but appear to have found form at the right time.

Other first leg fixtures on Wednesday will see Brazilian clubs Coritiba and Ponte Preta host Itagui and Deportivo Pasto of Colombia respectively.

Libertad of Paraguay will welcome the visit of Brazil´s Sport Recife on Thursday and Colombia´s Atletico Nacional take on another Brazilian team, Bahia, on Frida

CONCACAF Champions League Preview: Galaxy, Tijuana on verge of progression
LA Galaxy can qualify for the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League by avoiding defeat against Cartagines.

Bruce Arena´s side currently top Group Eight and lead their opponents by two points, having played a games less.

Galaxy currently sit fourth in the MLS Western Conference and have been in formidable form in the Champions League, winning both of their games so far without conceding a goal, while Cartagines have a mixed record.

The Costa Rican side have won, drawn and lost once in their group, with that defeat coming against the Galaxy in August.

In Group Seven, Tijuana can also make sure of their progression with just a point, as they face winless Victoria.

The Mexican side are unbeaten in the competition so far, although defeat to the Honduran side would allow Firpo to leapfrog them when they play their final group game in October.

Three points for either Alajuelense or Sporting San Miguelito when the pair meet would move them level on points with Group Four leaders America, with the Costa Rican side Alajuelense having played a game less than their two group rivals.

Cruz Azul will be favourites going into their Group Three clash with bottom side Valencia, having won both their games so far. While Valencia have no hope of qualification, the Liga MX outfit can move three points clear at the top and bolster their hopes of progression.

Heredia can book their place in the next stage with a win over Group Five´s bottom side Montreal Impact while Olimpia will look to keep their hopes of progression alive from Group Two with victory over Real Esteli.

MLS outfit Houston Dynamo will leapfrog Arabe Unido to the top of Group One with a win against bottom side W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago after the Americans beat the leaders 2-1 last month.

In Group Six, Comunicaciones need to win both their remaining games, starting against Caledonia AIA, if they are to catch leaders Toluca.

Liga MX Wrap: America on top, Leon up to second

America secured a 3-1 home win over Chiapas to seal top spot in the Liga MX.

Rubens Sambueza opened the scoring after 19 minutes for the hosts, before Miguel Layun doubled the advantage six minutes into the second half.

Raul Jimenez bagged a third after 69 minutes, meaning that Carlos Ochoa´s reply four minutes later was nothing more than a consolation.

The result saw America climb above Morelia, who fell to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Monterrey.

Guillermo Madrigal scored twice for the visitors on 50 and 56 minutes, before Aldo Ramirez pulled one back for Morelia midway through the second half.

But any thoughts of a comeback were short-lived, as Alejandro Garcia found the net in the 77th minute to seal the points for Monterrey.

Leon climbed above Morelia into second thanks a 2-1 home success over Guadalajara.

Hernano Burbano gave the hosts the lead in the 10th minute and Luis Montes scored a second eight minutes before half-time.

Miguel Ponce pulled one back seven minutes after the break but Guadalajara could not find an equaliser.

Leon are now level on points with leaders America, but they have played two games more than their rivals.

Fourth-placed Queretaro suffered a setback as they were thumped 4-0 away at Toluca, while 10-man Atlas secured a late 3-3 draw at home to Veracruz.

Angel Reyna´s penalty put the visitors in front in the 29th minute, before Omar Bravo replied with a penalty of his own eight minutes later to level the scores.

Two goals shortly after the break from Cristian Martinez Borja and Jesus Sanchez gave Veracruz a two-goal advantage, but Vicente Vuoso pulled one back with 15 minutes to go before Lucas Ayala was sent off.

But they made light of their numerical disadvantage as Edson Rivera snatched a point in the fifth-minute of stoppage time.

Elsewhere in the division, there were goalless draws in the matches between Tijuana and Cruz Azul, and Tigres UANL and Puebla.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Top two share spoils in eight-goal thriller

Costa Rica Primera Division leaders Deportivo Saprissa played out an entertaining 4-4 draw against Alajuelense on Sunday.

Deportivo Saprissa remain a point clear after earning a draw at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose.

In an entertaining and eventful encounter, the league-leading hosts needed a late equaliser from Diego Estrada to avoid giving up top spot.

Kevin Sancho put the visitors ahead on 24 minutes when he headed in the opener before Kenneth Garcia doubled their lead.

Garcia´s initial strike five minutes later was saved, but – given a second chance – he finished into the roof of the net.

But in a remarkable turnaround, the hosts were somehow ahead before half-time.

Michael Barquero volleyed in on 39 minutes before David Ramirez headed in the equaliser moments later.

When Barquero scored on the stroke of half-time, Deportivo Saprissa were ahead and took that advantage into the break.

Deportivo Saprissa dominated the early stages of the second half but scores were level on 58 minutes when Alex Robinson headed past his own goalkeeper to make it 3-3.

The hosts squandered chance after chance and were made to pay on 88 minutes when Alejandro Alpizar scored a one-on-one opportunity for Alajuelense.

Deportivo Saprissa got the point they deserved through Estrada, who capitalised on a defensive mistake to level the contest at 4-4.

Third-placed Herediano failed to capitalise on the draw between the top two as they were held to a 1-1 result at UCR.

Perez Zeledon edged Santos de Guapiles 3-2, Puntarenas beat Carmelita 3-2 and Cartagines were 2-0 winners at home to Belen Siglo XXI.

Limon overcame struggling Uruguay 2-1.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Caracas, Anzoategui maintain winning ways

Roberto Armua and Luis Gonzalez were on the scoresheet for Eduardo Sarago´s Caracas, who made it five wins from six matches with a 2-1 victory at home to Aragua.

Alexander Rondon netted a late penalty for Aragua, but it proved to be mere consolation for the visitors.

Deportivo Anzoategui also made it five wins from six matches with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home to Zulia.

Edwin Aguilar scored a last-minute winner for the hosts.

Zamora kept the pressure on the top two as Pedro Ramirez and Juan Falcon scored in their 2-0 win at bottom side Atletico El Vigia.
