International Friendly: Australia 1 Costa Rica 0

http://www.youtube.com/w…h0ugB7fdMPE

Substitute Tim Cahill´s trademark header earned Australia a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Ange Postecoglou´s first game at the helm.

The veteran midfielder scored just 17 minutes after being introduced from the bench, heading home Tommy Oar´s 69th-minute corner with the help of a notable deflection at Sydney´s Allianz Stadium.

It allowed Postecoglou, who replaced Holger Osieck after a 6-0 loss to France, to mark the occasion of his first match in charge with a promising victory.

Mark Milligan and Robbie Kruse starred for the home side, while youngster Tom Rogic looked dangerous in a 25-minute second-half cameo.

Australia almost suffered a disastrous start when Jason Davidson prodded the ball past his own goalkeeper following a mix up, but Ivan Franjic stepped in to clear to safety.

The hosts settled in to the game after that, with Patrick Pemberton becoming increasingly occupied in the Costa Rica goal.

After Milligan had set up Mathew Leckie to shoot wide, Kruse´s heavy touch let him down after he had been sent clear by Rhys Williams´ excellent throughball.

Postecoglou´s men continued to probe, earning a corner from which Mile Jedinak fired a shot on goal from inside the six-yard box, but Pemberton made a comfortable save.

The first chance of the second half fell to Costa Rica but Wellington Phoenix striker Kenny Cunningham miscued with only goalkeeper Mat Ryan to beat.

Cahill was brought on in the 52nd minute, replacing Leckie, and he rose highest to nod in Oar´s excellent delivery, with the ball taking a wicked deflection off Junior Diaz on its way in.

Apropos Barra Bravas Etc....faldt over den her artikel...fra ultimo juli 2013 - forbindelse med Colón - artiklen nedenfor....

The internal conflict in “La 12”

Boca Juniors’ barra brava has been responsible of many violent events in the last years, although the violence increased since Mauro Martín and Rafael Di Zeo started their fight for the leadership of the hooligan gang. It got worse when Martín, the Boca’s barra brava “La 12” leader, was arrested in connection with a murder.

Maximiliano Mazzaro, second in charge of the hooligan gang, is in jail too and, although Di Zeo says he is not involved with hooligans, he has followers who want to recover the leadership of “La 12”.

These are some of the “battles” between both sides of Boca’s “barra brava.”

March 2009: Two parts of Boca’s hooligan exchanged gunshots in a clash at a fast-food restaurant in Martín García and Almirante Brown streets, alongside Parque Lezama. It took place in full daylight before a Boca’s match at La Bombonera stadium. Six hooligans were arrested and a firearm was seized.

October 2011: Rafael Di Zeo returned to the stands of La Bombonera after serving time in jail, and in different parts of the stadium he threatened Mauro Martín with violent gestures.

March 2012: At the front of the dancing place Cocodrilo, in Recoleta, William Laluz Fernández, known as “el uruguayo Richard” (Richard the Uruguayan), and confronted with Mauro Martín’s group, was wounded by two gunshots and had surgery at the Rivadavia Hospital.

August 2012: Two opposing groups of Boca’s barra brava exchanged gunshots in a clash at Kilometre 21 of the Santa Fe-Rosario highway as they were going to Unión’s stadium. There were four people wounded, two seriously and three arrested. Among them was Mauro Martín, who was wounded with a gunshot in his abdomen and had emergency surgery in Santa Fe. Also, Cristian “Fido” Devaux, who is now in charge of “La 12” as Martín and Mazzaro are in jail, was wounded.

July 2013: In the preview of the friendly match between Estudiantes de La Plata and Boca Juniors at the Estadio Único, the “official” hooligan gang destroyed cars and prevented the dissident group of Lomas de Zamora from buying tickets and enter to the stadium.

Yesterday: Two opposing groups of “La 12” exchanged gunshots in a clash close to the Nuevo Gasómetro stadium before the match between Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo for the Winter Cup. Two men were killed and five were wounded.

Colón match suspended after players refuse to take field

The crisis at Primera Division club Colón de Santa Fe deepened today when the team´s players refused to participate in a match against Atletico Rafaela, due to a failure to pay the squad´s wages.

In some cases, members of the professional staff have not received a salary for the last seven months, and the debt held by the Sabalero board to players is believed to run into the millions.

The decision to abandon the game was taken by the club´s players after a deadline for payment, today at 3pm, passed without further action.

As a result of the non-appearance, Colón were ajudged to have lost the game 2-0 by walkover after last-minute negotiations with players failed to avoid the protest. The club could also be deducted three points by the Argentine Football Association, adding to the six lost earlier in the season due to the non-payment of a previous transfer fee.

Brazil´s "London Mob" is at the heart of recent success

http://a.espncdn.com/pho…576x324.jpg

Some of the Brazilian national team players got together for a Halloween party: Heurelho Gomes as a mummy, David Luiz as "Where´s Waldo?", Ramires as Cap. Jack Sparrow and Sandro as Batman.

In a recent interview, Brazilian defender Thiago Silva spoke enthusiastically about getting together with his fellow countrymen.

"It´s very good for team spirit and it´s a nice way for us expats to congregate away from home," he mused.

However, the Selecao captain wasn´t talking about Paris Saint-Germain´s green and yellow contingent. Rather, he was actually moaning about having missed an invitation to hop across the channel and join his national team centre-back partner David Luiz at Sandro’s house party.

While it remains unclear if the shy defender would be willing to make a fool of himself in fancy dress -- unlike David "Where´s Waldo?" Luiz, Captain Jack "Ramires" Sparrow and Tottenham´s Brazilian midfielder in a Batman costume -- he certainly appreciated the shenanigans of what has been described as the Seleçao´s "London Mob."

With Chelsea regularly being the most represented club in Luiz Felipe Scolari´s call-ups thanks to Luiz, Ramires, Oscar -- and, for this week´s international friendlies at least, Willian -- it´s clear when you factor in Spurs´ Paulinho and Liverpool´s Lucas Leiva that England-based players are an influential group in the squad.

Then there´s goalkeeper Julio Cesar, one of the most experienced players in Big Phil´s plans. In fact, it was at Luiz´ birthday party earlier this year that the goalie caused a diplomatic incident with his own fans when he showed up dressed as the Chelsea defender, unwisely wearing the kit of QPR´s hated West London rivals.

"We like to get together, talk rubbish and let some steam off. We´re all away from our home country with our friends and we are Brazilians above club rivalries, although nobody ever misses an opportunity to banter," explains Sandro, still complaining about the taunts he received from Ramires and Luiz after Chelsea´s Champions League victory in 2011-12 trumped Spurs´ fourth-place finish and gave the Blues a CL spot the following season.

That said, rivalries in these gatherings are usually more related to Playstation or snooker grudges. Luiz´ flat in Putney has a pool table where home advantage seems hard to be overcome. "One of the first things the lads told me was that David is basically unbeatable on his table," Paulinho remembers.

These social occasions have become important also for players who are going through rough patches. The above-mentioned fancy dress party at Sandro´s counted Spurs´ out-of-favor goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who dressed as a mummy, among the guests. Last month, Lucas Leiva´s mobile phone was flooded with messages from London-based fellow countrymen when the Liverpool midfielder got his first call-up in almost two years.

These bonds are obviously carried on to the Selecao. However, they go beyond socializing, as Luiz states pretty clearly. "England is still the country that concentrates most of the players representing their national sides, so we have a chance to see these guys week in and week out, to study them up close."

For Oscar, there is the added bonus of familiarity. "There is never a lot of time to train when we are on national duty, so playing alongside club teammates can be an advantage," reckons the pint-sized midfielder.

The emergence of the "London Mob" also reflects the changes in the geopolitics of football. Previously packed with Serie A-based players, especially from the Milan giants, Brazil these days only count Lazio´s Hernanes and Maicon´s Roma as representatives. Real Madrid, which boasted Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Cicinho and Robinho in the 2006, is only represented by left-back Marcelo these days. Barcelona only has two regular participants, though Dani Alves and a certain kid named Neymar.

But there is at least one reason for Brazilians to worry about the dominant English presence in their national team. The Premier League is known for its physicality and a calendar that unlike all the other European major leagues does not have a winter break. As a result, the England team themselves have been systematically deprived from key players due to injury. What if the same were true for the Selecao? When players reported for duty before the Confederations Cup this past May, Oscar’s fitness was one the main issues worrying Scolari.

Yet Brazil´s manager is also a huge fan of the Premier League´s intensity. And he certainly will not be complaining if more of his players are involved in Champions League football, able to measure themselves against the European elite. Still, some naysayers will point to a quirky fact to prove their point: In none of Brazil´s five World Cup-winning squads has the team carried a single player based in England.

Scolari and his heavily based England contingent will hope that changes in 2014.

A World Cup ticket only saves the business

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Dawn on Wednesday in Oceania will undoubtedly see Mexico garner its hoped-for ticket to the World Cup, but it won´t give any guarantee that its national game is heading for the standard it so dreams of and yearns for.

The "nightmare" and "torment" that the Hexagonal qualification rounds became may now be in the past, but the same cannot be said of the sizable and serious structural gaps that have been revealed in Mexican soccer.

The key word here could be "balance."

And it isn´t a question of defense, offense, possession, scoring goals or making saves. It´s a question of how to bring balance to a national game that is highly passionate, that manages its business end well, that generates revenue, that is achieving some promising results at the younger levels -- but that has not yet achieved a period of stability, maturity and solid results.

There is a great imbalance between what Mexican soccer is and what it wants to be. The business is good, healthy, satisfactory, but the game results are not at the same level.

Today, the business has once again been saved. The question is: When will the game on the field be saved?

It wasn´t necessary to endure such suffering, such agonies and so many miles traveled to get the World Cup ticket. The day was saved, almost miraculously, by a third party´s ability and the qualification play-offs opponent´s lack of ability.

Now we must look ahead. It is not enough to confirm Miguel Herrera´s appointment, or to look to America to form the foundation of the team, or to convince the European-based players to give their all. Deep-seated changes need to be made to the very structures of Mexican soccer to provide certainty that these transformations will soon be reflected on the field.

To achieve it, we need input from all clubs; we need the company that has historically controlled Mexican soccer to be prepared to open up to new ideas; we need the bosses to stop thinking only about money and leave the task of making decisions about what happens on the field to people who know what they are talking about. Let´s take advantage of this embarrassing situation and rebuild out of the wreckage.

To say that it was a rough patch, a crisis, an unlucky streak, is only to sweep the "mess" under the carpet. We need to do a "spring cleaning," to set a new course, to achieve balance, allowing our national game to be rich not just in funds but also in quality of play.

El Tri have incentive to perform well, for country and coach

A coach under pressure for the team´s stodgy style, players accused of playing with no heart, past World Cup honor rapidly fading as the present campaign to even reach the tournament is in peril -- no, it´s not Mexico in dire straits, it´s New Zealand.

While France is on the verge of elimination and other countries like Iceland have been surprisingly able to challenge for a spot in Brazil 2014, it´s all gone according to script for El Tri in their playoff series. A four-goal advantage is a hefty and nearly insurmountable lead. That explains in large part why the Mexican players arrived for the final leg of the match like happy tourists, posing for pictures and visiting sites around the island nation.

For the New Zealand players the return home was a grim affair. Now their first goal seems to be to avoid embarrassment in front of their local fans. The main reason coach Ricki Herbert wasn´t fired outright after the 5-1 defeat to Mexico in Azteca Stadium was that it would have been too much trouble to hire a new coach for just the single remaining match. The Kiwis are a practical people.

As it is, Herbert is expected to "stand down" after the final game versus El Tri. It was widely assumed that if Herbert was successful in qualifying the team for the World Cup again, he would be offered a new contract. Barring a completely shocking reversal of the current result, that won´t happen. New Zealand will look for a new coach, while Mexico begins to prepare for the World Cup.

For El Tri, that process brings its own questions. Miguel Herrera, at present, doesn´t have a longer contract than Herbert. This game, though, is likely to be the opposite of a farewell and more of an audition for the position on a permanent basis. Herrera is already talking that way in news conferences. He recently referred to Mexico´s disastrous qualifying campaign in realistic terms, acknowledging what many in Mexican soccer have denied even against overwhelming evidence: The CONCACAF region has changed too much for El Tri to assume that qualification will be easily secured.

Of course, now that Mexico practically has its ticket in hand, the temptation to upgrade to a more cultured and worldly-wise international coach may be strong. Herrera may be only a stopgap to that future appointment. But besides his understanding of Mexican talent and his ability to motivate players, Herrera has a connection to the team’s fate that no foreign coach dropping by to fulfill a contract could have.

Those minutes of the final CONCACAF World Cup qualifying games when the results had Mexico eliminated were lived by Herrera and many others across the country in stunned shock. The disbelief, the slightly sick feeling of incomprehension and helplessness --no one would want to return that horrific time, least of all Herrera, whose love for team and country is enthusiastic and effusive. Qualifying in a professional and efficient manner would definitely be a priority for the coach in the future, should he be offered the position as national team coach.

To that end, the El Tri players may also have incentive to perform well against New Zealand as a way of casting their vote for Herrera’s candidacy. A dominant 5-1 victory sends a message. A win in both legs of the playoff would send a stronger message.

Herrera may even have the confidence to experiment a bit and send out a shuffled lineup of players. However, look for Oribe Peralta, Miguel Layun, Luis Montes and Rafael Marquez to still be the centerpieces of the squad.

In a recent interview with FIFA.com, Montes may have revealed the secret of Herrera´s success with the same players that other coaches failed to earn results with: "His ideas are very clear, and that’s allowed us to start playing good football again"

Look for more of that versus New Zealand. If El Tri once again displays an excellent performance, no matter what the Kiwis do, Mexico will be on its way to the World Cup, and Herrera could join in.
