Brazil youngster Mosquito has Premier League scouts buzzing

Name: Thiago Rodrigues da Silva (Mosquito)
Age: 17
Club: Atletico Paranaense
Position: Striker
Nationality: Brazilian

He is a headline writer´s dream, but there is proving to be much more to Mosquito than just a quirky name. He was the top-scorer at the 2011 South American Under-15 Championship, but had seen contractual disputes hinder his progression over the following two years. Four goals and some excellent performances at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup, though, and the vultures are flocking around the young striker, with his 18th birthday in January potentially opening the doors to an international transfer.

If club colleague Nathan was the star for Brazil at the recent event in the UAE, Mosquito was certainly among his closest rivals. His efforts did not go unnoticed, with the Mirror´s Ed Malyon reporting this week that Manchester United, Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid are all in the hunt for his capture next month. It is all a far cry from the difficulties that the striker has faced over the past two years and, indeed, throughout his life to date.

The young Thiago´s grew up in Rio de Janeiro´s Cidade de Deus or "City of God", however, the small and shy youngster would manage to avoid the perils of his local area, with his footballing talent taking him into futsal with first Fluminense and then Flamengo. However, it was at a third Rio de Janeiro giant, Vasco da Gama, where he first came to wider prominence with his performances for the Under-15 national side.

Given his nickname while at Fluminense -- owing to his size and speed around the futsal court -- Mosquito has now matured into a physically strong player whose figure is somewhat at odds with his moniker. Indeed, in the two years since his first emergence, it has been his physical development that has been particularly pleasing --with his technical abilities already strong from an early age. Perhaps, then, the travails that saw him spend a year out of the game have seen him benefit in other ways.

It was his move from Vasco to Atletico Paranaense that provoked outrage. Rules agreed upon between Brazil´s leading clubs forbid the active recruitment of players prior to them turning professional, to prevent the poaching of young talent by bigger clubs. Vasco, though, have failed to pay their academy players on a regular basis and Mosquito was one of the first to walk away, with Atletico willing recipients. The result, though, was outrage and talk of boycotts if the club were invited to appear in youth tournaments. As a result, for the entirety of the 2012 calendar year, Mosquito was unable to represent his new side in competitive matches.

Such an extended absence has the potential to damage a young player´s progression, but Mosquito has dealt with the situation well. He returned with strong performances in the 2013 Paranaense Under-17 championship and, later on, with the national team setup. While many had pushed the claims of Manchester United-linked Bruno Gomes as the better option for Brazil in the UAE, there can be no complaints about Mosquito´s showings.

His relationship from club level with Nathan would have helped and there was a clear understanding of each other’s games which was visible in the intelligent movement demonstrated in their Group Stage games. While predominantly right-footed, he has shown the ability to finish instinctively off either side and retains the pace that initially set him apart from the crowd, despite his new, tougher physique.

While it is difficult to judge exactly how he will develop, with the coming years key to the overall development of Brazil´s 1996 generation, the basics are in place for Mosquito to head straight to the upper echelons of the game. However, as ever, plenty of hard work and good fortune will be required to see his talent fully fulfilled.

Of the clubs linked with his services, the suggestion of a move to Chelsea is now the most frequent. It is suspected that the Blues would look to instantly move the Brazilian on to Dutch side Vitesse, who currently sit atop of the Eredivisie in part due to Blues youngsters Lucas Piazon, Christian Atsu, Patrick van Aanholt, Gael Kakuta and Cristian Cuevas. There, he would be expected to develop his skills and prove himself ready for a role in the Chelsea squad, much as Piazon and company are doing at present.

Wherever he does end up, even in Brazil, there will be similar challenges. His growing reputation may bring opportunity, but it will also bring levels of expectation that many a young hopeful has failed to reach. Mosquito is heading in the right direction and has done brilliantly to overcome significant obstacles thus far in his early life and career. To reach the pinnacle of the game, though, the hard work must continue in earnest for some time yet.

Club America officially hands reins over to Mohamed

MEXICO CITY -- Weeks of speculation ended this Wednesday when Club America president Ricardo Pelaez confirmed that former Xolos boss Antonio Mohamed would take over as head coach of the team following the Apertura 2013 campaign.

Mohamed stands to inherit a team that has made two straight finals and can become Liga MX´s first back-to-back titleholder since 2004. As a player, Mohamed played for the Aguilas briefly in 1998, exclusively in the Copa Libertadores and on loan from Toros Neza, the team he was most famous for playing in Mexico.

This will be the Argentine national´s seventh team as a manager in Mexico. Following brief and mostly unsuccessful stints at Zacatepec, Morelia, Queretaro, Jaguares, and Veracruz, Mohamed joined Tijuana as just their second manager in the First Division following Joaquin del Olmo´s firing.

There, he orchestrated a quick turnaround that avoided relegation for the northern Mexico side in 2012, only to then guide them to the Liga MX title in his second full tournament as manager, beating Toluca in an entertaining final that saw the team hoist the championship trophy for the first time ever in the top flight.

Six months later, he left Tijuana after an historic Copa Libertadores campaign that saw Xolos one goal away from eliminating eventual champs Atletico Mineiro in an epic quarterfinal series. Following that, Mohamed returned to his native Buenos Aires and took on the challenge of elevating boyhood club Huracan to the Argentine First Division.

However, after only a few weeks, poor results and a string of underperforming signings forced Mohamed to resign his post, and become considered for several high-profile jobs in Mexico, such as Cruz Azul, America and Atlas. In an interview with Univision, Mohamed´s former on-the-pitch rival Pelaez confirmed that Miguel Herrera would vacate the post in favor of the former Boca Juniors midfielder.

Herrera will take the Mexican national team position in a full-time role, after being asked to qualify El Tri to the 2014 World Cup on an interim basis. His work against New Zealand in a home-and-away series using ten Club America players as a base was more than enough reason to convince Mexican Football Federation officials that he was the man for the job.

Despite a checkered past in Mexico, Mohamed has shown to be effective in multiple settings. As manager of Colon in Argentina, Mohamed led the Santa Fe club to continued success in the league, including consecutive fourth-place and third-place finishes in 2009. A year later, he left the club after qualifying them for the Copa Libertadores. As manager of embattled Argentine club Independiente, he led the "King of Cups" to its last great achievement: conquest of the 2010 Copa Sudamericana.

Mohamed´s first tournament will likely see at least one of his former players join him at Club America. Ecuador international Fidel Martinez has been mentioned as a strong possibility. Striker Duvier Riascos signed on with Morelia, negating Mohamed of one of his most important players at Tijuana.

Club America kicks off the Clausura 2014 season Saturday, January 4 against Tigres at the Estadio Azteca.

Chivas supporters brace, bristle

America will face Leon in the two-legged Liga MX final beginning Thursday, and the moment Chivas fans have feared most is 180 minutes from becoming a reality: Las Aguilas overtaking them as Mexico’s most successful club.

It was, therefore, no surprise that as Mexico City’s America was successfully negotiating its one-goal deficit in the Liga MX semifinal second leg against Toluca with aplomb in front of 90,000-plus fans inside the Estadio Azteca, a substantial number of Chivas fans took to Twitter and other social networks to express their desperation at the current fate of their club.

The disaffection took the form of the hashtag “#Chivaton.”

In Mexico, the "-ton” ending is understood to be referring to a charity campaign to raise money for one worthy cause or another.

Obviously it is tongue in cheek, but it does highlight a rising resentment at the club’s transfer policy so far this winter, after a year in which Chivas finished 17th and 16th in the two regular seasons.

Over recent days, quality young Mexican midfielders Diego de Buen and Edgar Andrade -- thought to be on Chivas’ wish list -- have both signed for new clubs, while Guadalajara picked up veteran midfielder Israel Castro, who is solid but not exactly a signing to excite fans.

The loan signing of youngster Julio Gomez from Pachuca is another that hasn’t exactly captured the popular imagination, especially as it is for a year and without an option for Chivas to buy if the talented forward does well.

Then, there was Tigres coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti saying that his club would not be accepting “peanuts” for players, something that was widely interpreted as him having a dig at Chivas’ attempt to bring Carlos Salcido back to the club where he started his career.

The bad press -- at a club that likes to keep a tight control on what message it is getting out -- wasn’t helped by the club bragging last weekend it has over three million “Likes” on Facebook and was urging fans to buy “Chivabonos” -- or season tickets -- for the Clausura 2014 as Christmas presents. The same message indicated that anyone spending over 5,000 pesos (almost $400) would get a free Chivas shirt.

When the club’s owners are being accused of not spending enough on bringing in players to overhaul a struggling squad, attempting to use those same fans to keep pumping money into the club didn’t go down well.

The messages in response from some of those three million were overwhelmingly negative, with the sentiment from followers that the club should bring in new players. Some suggested the club owners should use some of the money from those multi-million dollar TV deals.

These are tough time for Chivas and their fans, who will be watching the Liga MX final peeking through their fingers, praying that Club America doesn´t overtake Guadalajara.

If America does capture title number 12, the pressure on Chivas to react will be ratcheted up another notch or two and it will have to humbly stop referring to itself as Mexico’s most successful club.

Tena takes the reins at Cruz Azul

MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Cruz Azul announced Wednesday that Luis Fernando Tena will return for his fourth stint as head coach at the club, replacing Guillermo Vazquez, who was let go more than a week ago.

Tena, who guided the Mexico City-based side to its last domestic-league title in 1997, directed Mexico to a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Earlier that year, he led the Tricolor to the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament title.

The Mexico City-based side has advanced to this season’s CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals with a perfect 4-0-0 record in the group stage, but was eliminated from the Mexican Apertura playoffs at the quarterfinal stage by Toluca, 4-1 on aggregate.

Most recently, Tena was in charge of Mexico for one game, a 2-0 loss at the United States in a World Cup qualifier on September 10, 2013. He was a short-term replacement for Jose Manuel de la Torre, who was relieved of his duties after a string of mediocre results.

The 55-year-old also won the 2000 Invierno with Morelia.

Atlético Mineiro is confident of a title

Atlético Mineiro players are convinced they have all the tools to get the Club World Cup title. the favorite going into the tournament is Bayern Múnich.

The Brazilian team seeks a fifth title for Brazil and South America in this tenth edition of the tournament. The past winners were Corinthians (2000 and 2012), Sao Paulo (2005) and International de Porto Alegre (2006).

To obtain the title they must first win their semifinal match on Wednesday, December 18, in Marrakech, probably against Mexico´s Monterrey. The final is scheduled for Saturday, the 21st.

Joao (Jo) Alves de Assis Silva, top scorer in the Copa Libertadores with seven goals, believes that Atletico Mineiro has in its ranks quality players who also have experience to face a competition of this kind.

"Our team has enough quality. We have many players who have played on the Brazilian national team, besides me, like Victor, Rever, Leo, Joshua or Tardelli, not to mention Ronaldinho, who was twice World Player of the year," recalled the 26-year-old former player of CSKA Moscow, Manchester City, Everton and Galatasaray.

"Getting to the World, you have to win the Libertadores and that already shows what you can do. The Club World Cup is a different tournament and it will be great to participate. It´s important because it brings together the best clubs from each continent and all have the dream of being champions," he added.

Goalkeeper Victor also has confidence that his team is capable of a surprise as Corinthians showed last year when they beat Chelsea 1-0 in the final.

"For a player to be in a tournament of this level, bringing together the cream of the teams around the world, this is the realization of a dream, a source of pride and happiness, personal satisfaction and a unique feeling. We face this competition as the most important in the history of Atletico," said the keeper.

"We have to play very hard, as we did in the Libertadores, to make noise in the Club World Cup. We come with the best expectations and to get another conquest. We have all the conditions to fight for the title," said the keeper.

Their coach Cuca, draws inspiration from Corinthians win last year over Chelsea, although he knows that the situation is different.

"If we get to the final with Bayern, we would be required to have a magical, perfect day in which everything goes well for us, and also that things for Bayern do not go quite right. Something that we talk a lot about is that Corinthians beat Chelsea last year. And it´s true, they won. But they took on a Chelsea team in a moment of transition," said Cuca on FIFA´s website.

"We would face a Bayern that is basically the same but with a different coach. All the players have been together for quite a while and are currently at their best. What I see from them is that they have a systematic way of playing. If we work well in this aspect we can have a small advantage," added the coach.
