Fuck...

Costa Rica Primera Division: Herediano 0 Alajuelense 0 (3-5 on pens)

Alajuelense have won their 29th Costa Rican Primera Division title after defeating Heridiano 5-3 in a penalty shootout.

The two sides squared off in the second leg in Heridiano after neither could break the deadlock in the goalless first-leg draw at Alajuelense.

But after 120 minutes in the second leg, the tie still remained 0-0 before Oscar Ramirez´s men were the more composed team from the penalty spot in the shootout.

It is a historical victory for Alajuelese, who became the equal-most successful Costa Rican club as they matched Deportivo Saprissa´s 29 championships.

Alajuelense have also won five of the last seven domestic titles as they celebrate one of the most successful periods in the club´s history.

The new Costa Rican domestic season begins on January 12th

Portmore Move In ´Right Direction´

August Town´s Maurice Bennett misses at an attempt to head the ball, as he is approached by Portmore United´s Adoah Nickle, during the Red Stripe Premier League football match at the UWI Bowl yesterday. Nickle scored to hand Portmore a 1-0 win. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer
Ryon Jones, Staff Reporter

Portmore United came out on top in the battle of the two bottom-placed teams in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), after edging August Town 1-0 yesterday at the UWI Bowl, Mona.

The game´s lone goal was scored by Adoah Nickle in the third minute.

August Town were without their coach, Bradley Stewart, who was said to be home recuperating after he had to be rushed to hospital on Saturday evening.

"He had a problem last night and had to be rushed to the hospital," August Town´s manager, Marlon Small, revealed. "Hopefully, all is well with him at home resting, and he gets back to us as soon as possible."

The result did not change either teams´ positioning in the 12-team standings. Portmore seem to be finding some form, however, as more than half of their 14 points have been acquired in their last four outings, but they still remain 11th. Harbour View lead on 30 points.

RIGHT DIRECTION

"We are making a step in the right direction," Portmore United´s coach, Calvin Lewis, shared. "The objective is to try and reach in the top four so that we can challenge for the title, and I just hope that the new year brings some good fortune for us."

Conversely, things seem to be getting from bad to worse for August Town, as after starting off the season with a run of five games unbeaten, they have now failed to win any of their last eight outings, and sit at the foot of the table with 11 points.

They also boast the league´s worst home record, having registered only one win from their eight home games, to go with two draws and five defeats.

"It is not like in those eight games we have been beaten badly," Small reasoned.

"The transfer window is around the corner, we plan on getting in some other players to supplement what is here, and I think that should do the trick."

August Town´s evening got off to the worst possible start when a ball played into the box was adjudged to have been handled by one of a number of players in the crowded penalty area. Referee Dwight Royal awarded a penalty, which was taken by Nickle. His initial shot from the spot was excellently saved by August Town´s custodian, Diego Haughton, but Nickle was the only one alive in the box, and he was able to toe-poke home the rebound.

August Town´s best chance to get back on level terms came in the 58th minute when Portmore United´s goalkeeper, Kemar Foster, parried a vicious right-sided cross by Micheal Spence into the path of the unmarked Lennox Creary. Creary lacked composure, as he fired wide of the unguarded net from 12 yards out.

St Fleur Goal Nets Victory For MBUFC

Western Bureau:

Striker Lesly St Fleur scored his fourth goal of the season to give second-place Montego Bay United Football Club (MBUFC) a battling 1-0 win over Tivoli Gardens FC in yesterday´s Red Stripe Premier League football match at Wespow Park as Donovan Duckie´s team stayed second with 26 points, behind Harbour View (30).

The win for the Montegonians was their first following three drawn matches at the venue, and a timely one as the home supporters were beginning to show frustration. But in this match, the home team showed much more determination, particularly in the second half, which was a complete turnaround from the first stanza in which neither team displayed enough fighting spirit.

Bahamian international St Fleur said his goal was important.

"It was a good win and I am happy to have scored the only goal," he said. "We deserved to win, although we should have scored even more. But it is all a part of the game, and the good thing is that it keeps us on the heels of the league leaders."

His goal came during a short period where the home side looked purposeful with the ball and fellow front man, Dino Williams, who was hustled off the ball, fought back well to reclaim possession and whipped in a cross that needed only a header from St Fleur to direct it past Edsel Scott in the Tivoli goal at the 50th minute.

CAME TO LIFE

The Admiral Bailey-coached Tivoli then came to life, making the game more open as they searched for the equaliser.

But the next chance actually fell for Williams, whose shot from inside the area missed the mark as his angle was blocked by at least three defenders.

Then in the 78th minute, Tivoli´s Ranike Anderson gave Jacomeno Barrett, the MBUFC goalkeeper, something to think about with a rasping shot that - had it been on target - would all but end up in the back of the net. Luckily for the diving Barrett, the attempt was just wide.

Tivoli remained on 18 points and must feel disappointed to have left the Second City without a share of the points, which they fully deserved.

"They could have scored as they had chances, too. But we did, and it´s a sweet victory against a tough opposition," noted St Fleur.

Cavalier stall runaway Harbour View train

CHAMPIONS Harbour View were held to a 1-1 draw by Cavalier and saw their lead atop of the Red Stripe Premier League reduced to four points.

James Durrant had given Harbour View a 22nd-minute lead, firing home from a McKaulley Tulloch cutback, but five minutes later Girvan Brown picked Clifton Waugh´s pocket and slotted home to level the scores.

The result meant Harbour View´s seven-game winning streak has been halted which saw them inched to 30 points from 14 games.
Cavalier, who matched Harbour View stride for stride, moved to 18 points and provisionally stayed in seventh spot.

But things could have been different for Cavalier had Claudious Blackburn been more clinical in front of goal. A teasing right-sided cross from Alvaranga fell nicely into his path at the six-yard box, but he hesitated too long and was closed down. It was a miss that denied Cavalier a chance to really climb up the tables, but instead they remain 12 points adrift of the leader.

Teams:

Reggae boy signs long-term contract with Minnesota

OMAR Daley´s parting of ways with Scottish giant Motherwell, earlier this year may seem on the surface a dropped chance by the Jamaican midfielder to consolidate his position in the top flight.

And when he decided to accept a loan offer from the fledgling North American Soccer League (NASL) outfit Minnesota United, it was indeed a comparative step down.

But having had a successful three-month loan spell in the US second-tier with Minnesota, Daley is on the fringe of stepping up his game with the Loons on a more permanent basis.

With his new long-term deal, the fleet-footed Jamaican winger is not only expected to play an integral part in the on-field business, but the club has asked him to play a leadership role as its ambassador.

And while there were a couple of "promising offers" on the table, the 32-year-old had already fallen in love with the club. So it was not difficult for owner Bill McGuire and coach Manny Lagos to convince the Jamaican to stay on for the long haul.

"Originally when I went there, it was a three-month loan, but the club has received an injection of funds and they have asked me to stay on a more long-term basis," Daley told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

"Sometimes in football is not where you think you should be, it´s where you are at that moment in time that´s important, and if it´s good for me and the family and the club, then that makes it the right place and time.

"The offer was good plus the club wants me to play a more integral part in their development and be an ambassador for the club as well. So when I weighed all of those things, I thought it was a good deal and I took it," said the fomer Glenmuir High standout.

Daley said he also became comfortable at the North American club, for not only the opportunity it offers him as a player and the financial benefits, but he wanted the ideal setting to keep him close to his family in Jamaica.

"I got an offer in Thailand, but I wanted something closer to my family. A couple of people in England wanted to see me to assess my level of fitness, but I opted to stay with Minnesota because they have been good to me and it allows [me] to be close to Jamaica at this time," said the former Bradford City man.

Daley refused to discuss details of the new arrangement, offering only "that it´s a good package".

In his last game for Minnesota last season, Daley scored a delighted hat-trick, which he thinks "put the icing on the cake" in the club´s decision to hold on to him.

Daley, a member of Jamaica´s team to the 2001 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina, said parallel to his ambassadorial and on-field duties, he will be pursuing a coaching course as he looks to lay the foundation for a life after the playing side of the game.

"I will be starting a coaching course which I will do while I am playing, and that´s one of the reasons why the USA was my first choice as I will be doing my course in Minnesota," he said.

Minnesota United, which was founded in 2010, marks the second US club that Daley has represented, having paraded his stuff for Charleston Battery from 2006-2007, following his loan spell at Preston North End.

Daley, a former Reading player, said he has been inspired by his fellow Jamaican international Ricardo "Bibi" Gardner and the work he has been doing with the grass-roots through the Samsung Cup, an all-island tournament for preparatory and primary schools.

"I want to give back to football in Jamaica because it has given me so much. Look at what Ricardo Gardner is doing with the Samsung Cup kids and it looks good and is something that has inspired me," said the former Portmore United star.

As an explosive midfielder or winger, Daley has made some 72 appearances with seven goals to his name for the senior Reggae Boyz. He last represented Jamaica in a two-game friendly series against Trinidad and Tobago in November.

Central edges plucky Rangers; Caledonia holds Connection

DIRECTV W Connection dropped its first Pro League points of the season last night after being held goalless by Caledonia AIA at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Connection midfielders Jomal Williams and Silvio Spann both had shots rebound off the crossbar although Caledonia gave a good account of itself in a barren but entertaining clash at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Earlier at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, St Ann’s Rangers gave Central FC a major fright but could not hold on as Central recovered from a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 in an exciting clash, which was further spiced up by some questionable officiating.

Central‚Äôs triumph meant the ‚ÄúCouva Sharks‚ÄĚ were the biggest movers of this round as they climbed from seventh to fourth spot while Rangers remained rooted at the bottom of the nine-team table.

At the summit, Connection has held pole position since its opening fixture on September 14 when the ‚ÄúSavonetta Boys‚ÄĚ mauled Rangers 7-0 in Port of Spain. But Caledonia, who lost Guyanese defender Jamal Smith following an aerial collision after just 12 minutes, was nowhere near as pliant.

The only threatening moment of the first half came in the 21st minute as Williams stepped inside from the left flank and curled an effort off the bar following a typically brisk Connection counter. But there was much to enjoy about the exchanges as both teams mixed crisp, attacking ball movement with resolute defending.

Connection right back Joao Ananias had the best chance of the match after being sent clear by Joevin Jones, midway through the second half, but his shot was too close to Caledonia’s Grenadian custodian Shemel Louison.

Two minutes later, Louison tipped a viciously curling Spann corner kick off his own bar while he also went full stretch to keep out a late 22-yard Jones free kick as Caledonia held on for a point.

Caledonia remained sixth but ahead of Point Fortin Civic on goal difference as the Pro League rookie club slipped to seventh, which is its lowest position so far this season.

Central moved in the right direction but it was nowhere near as straightforward as coach Terry Fenwick might have expected against the table proppers.

The Sharks went ahead after just two minutes courtesy of a Keon Trim finish and might have been out of sight within the first 30 minutes as they laid siege to Rangers. But, one minute before the interval, an extraordinary refereeing decision gave the St Ann’s-based club a way back into the match.

Rangers striker Duran Dilworth was alone inside the opposing six yard box and well behind the Central defence when Kennedy Isles’ scoffed shot rolled into his path and he instinctively deflected the ball past Central custodian Jan-Michael Williams.

The Central players could not believe their eyes when referee’s assistant Crystal Sobers sprinted towards the halfline and referee Keilon Bacchus endorsed her decision.

But Rangers was a transformed team after the halftime break.

Lanky left sided 20-year-old midfielder Jelani Peters was the game’s outstanding player as he feasted on the less-than-stellar defensive efforts of Kaydion Gabriel, who deputised for the injured Elton John at right back.

And Peters steamed past Gabriel again in the 56th minute before crossing to Michael Yaw Darko who had enough space from his marker, Dwight Pope, to control before driving past Williams.

The lead lasted just five minutes before the officials again swung the fate of the match.

Central attacker Johan Peltier and Rangers captain Clevon McFee dashed towards a loose ball and Peltier got their fractionally before McFee’s challenge. Peltier’s tumble looked calculated but Bacchus awarded a penalty kick and Central captain Marvin Oliver finished emphatically off the underside of the bar.

Central defender Jamal Jack, a former Rangers employee, was played through the opposing defence by substitute Darren Mitchell but was denied by Rangers goalkeeper Terrence Clarke while Peltier curled one effort just over the bar from the edge of the area.

At the other end, Rangers also threatened to take all three points as midfielder Conrad Smith’s measured passes were routinely finding daylight spaces in the Central defence while Dilworth and Peters always looked dangerous.

But, two minutes from time, it was Central who made the breakthrough when Jason Marcano met a Peltier cross with a neat header for only his second goal of the season and his first from open play.

The Sharks spent the rest of the match trying to waste time near the corner flags rather than playing football. It was a perverse tribute to Rangers.

But Central got all three points at stake and will spend the Christmas break in the top half of the Pro League table.
