Metapan’s Muñoz looks for more successes in 2014

METAPAN, El Salvador -- At 32-years-old, Nicolas Muñoz is maintaining excellent form and he doesn’t plan on slowing down.

Currently, the Isidro Metapan striker shares the 2014 Salvadoran Clausura scoring lead with Dragon’s Williams Reyes and Jesus Toscanini of Juventude Independiente on four goals each. And, he is already thinking about a Jaguares repeat as league champion.

The veteran expressed his desire to lift the trophy once again in an interview with CONCACAF.com.

“We are working very hard to be champions this season and also working for the next season because we have the opportunity to play again in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL),” said Muñoz, referring to the fact that Metapan will play in the 2014-15 version of the CONCACAF club championship.

It can be stated that the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) is “his” tournament. During the 2012-13 edition, Muñoz was co-winner of the Golden Boot with Carlos Darwin Quintero of Santos as the tournament’s leading scorer with six goals.

Overall, the Panamanian has struck for 11 of Metapan’s last 13 CCL tallies, including all four in a 4-0 win over the LA Galaxy on October 24, 2013. That performance equaled him with Jose Maria Cardenas and Javier Orozco for the most goals in a single CCL match.

His total of 11 career CCL goals ties him for seventh on the all-time list.

Without a doubt, the CCL motivates Muñoz.

“We know that the Champions League is like our World Cup and thank God personally I have been good in it,” explained Muñoz. “In the last tournament I was able to score goals and I am happy that we have the passage to the next Champions League that starts next semester.”

In the current domestic campaign, Isidro Metapan is second with 10 points after five matches – three points behind FAS -- and the team has already scored ten goals. Muñoz says that the reason for the team’s a successful attack can be attributed to stability.

“The continuity has helped a lot,” he Muñoz. “We practically have the same players and the young players have more experience. We have an offensive team that likes to take on opponents.”

Metapan captured the 2013 Apertura title following a memorable post-season run. First, the team defeated Alianza 1-0 in an elimination match to determine the playoff’s fourth team. Then, it narrowly got past Atletico Marte in the semifinals, 3-2 on aggregate, before defeating FAS in the single-game final, 1-0.

Muñoz points out that the team never doubted its championship credentials.

“There is a lot of fight and devotion in this team,” concluded Muñoz. “It was complicated, but we never lost faith in ourselves and we had the unity that carries us to win the title.”

Monterrey makes coaching change

MONTERREY - Less than a year after winning a third straight CONCACAF Champions League title, Monterrey has made its second managerial change, when the club announced Tuesday that Jose Guadalupe Cruz has been relieved of his duties.

In his place, the Rayados named Carlos Barra and José Treviño as interim head coaches for the remainder of the season.

“Recognizing the particular sporting circumstances that is going through the team and understanding the difficulty of the challenge this represents, we have asked Carlos Barra Diaz and José Treviño on an interim basis to assume the team’s technical management for the rest of our participation in the Liga MX and Copa MX,” said Luis Miguel Salvador, Monterrey’s president of sports.

Monterrey currently is in a three-way tie for 14th place in the 18-team league. It has picked up six points in seven games, including one win, and is only two points ahead of last-place Tigres.

“For four tournaments, and despite getting a title in the CONCACAF Champions League, our team has experienced a trend of results that are far removed from those we seek,” expressed Salvador. “The obtained sporting dividends are not those which the institution intends permanently.

“The sporting situation we are experiencing is not something that we want and correcting it immediately is an urgent priority.”

In August 2013, Cruz replaced Victor Manuel Vucetich, who guided Monterrey to three CONCACAF crowns and two league championships. The 46-year-old, a former Atlante player, led the Rayados to a fifth-place finish at December’s FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.

“Our constant priority is to strengthen the sporting aspects, placing a special emphasis on observation and detection of talent that meets the profile in order to join our team to achieve goals that we have outlined,” stated Salvador. “The players, the technical group, the fans everybody in Monterrey have this most important cause in common.

“We all want Monterrey to win.”

Details of Toulon Tournament announced and Brazil paired with England

The draw for the under-21 Toulon Tournament was announced in France today and holders Brazil found out who they would be competing against in Group B.

The tournament is taking place in France between May and June and will be hosted in cities such as Toulon, Nice, Nimes and Avignon.

Brazil beat Colombia in the final last year and have been drawn alongside England, Qatar, Korea and coincidentally Colombia.

Whilst in Group A, holders France are paired with Chile, China, Portugal and Mexico. The schedule is yet to be announced though.

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate told the FA website that it will be a "different" challenge for his side.

Southgate said: "This will be a difficult challenge with the younger players in the group, as we head to the Toulon Tournament in France. That will see us playing nations from Asia and South America, so it´s a different test for us.

"We need that for our development as a team and individuals, to face those different styles and experience being away with an intense programme of games."

Paulo Freitas confirmed the news in his article for website Soccerly. He added that the Seleção, who are coached by Alexandre Gallo, are likely to pick impressive under-17 players.

São Paulo´s pair Boschilia and Ewandro are likely to be picked alongside Atlético Paranaense´s Nathan.

The tournament should prove to be another success and Brazil will be aiming to win the competition for the 8th time in their history.

Big Three Win in Campeonato Carioca: Daily

Wins for Vasco, Fluminense and Flamengo yesterday, while Botafogo play tonight in the Campeonato Carioca.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRZIL – Vasco, Fluminese and Flamengo all picked up three points yesterday in the ninth round of the Campeonato Carioca. The results leave Fluminense and Flamengo tied at the top with 22 points, while Vasco sit third.

First to play yesterday was Vasco, who comfortably beat Bangu 2-0 at Moça Bonita stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Vasco fielded a reserve side but still had too much for the team from the suburbs.

Thalles and Montoya came off the bench to score the goals that saw Vasco continue their good form in the tournament. New signing Douglas, who arrived from Corinthians last week, played his second game and put in another encouraging display.

Fred scored his first goal in 195 days as Fluminense beat Macaé 1-0. The win meant Flu stayed ahead of archrivals, Flamengo, on goal difference. The goal arrived midway through the first half.

Conca’s free-kick found Gu, who headed the ball across the six-yard box. Fred outmuscled his marker to head the game’s only goal, breaking his six-month drought. The Macaé players complained of a push by Fred but the goal stood.

The Flu fans asked for Walter, who had scored three goals in his last two games. He came on for Rafael Sóbis with thirteen minutes to go but could not get on the scoresheet last night.

Finally, Flamengo beat Madureira 2-0 to stay level with Flu. The Rubro-Negro also put out a second string but had enough in the tank to get to the finish line. An own goal and a strike from Negueba kept Fla on Fluminense’s coattails. The race for top spot is getting down to the wire.

Tonight, Botafogo host Volta Redonda at the Maracanã Stadium. Kick-off is at 7:30 PM.

Dérbi days

I’ve never made a point of concealing my allegiences within sport. Doing so, even in the realm of sports journalism, strikes me as odd and begs the question as to why one would withhold such information. To hide bias? To appear more professional or respectable?

There is a suggestion that by revealing the club you support you run the risk of estranging a large portion of your audience, opposing fans. However, the best examples of sports journalism in this country have all tied their colours to the mast at one point or another. Whether that be the corintiano Juca Kfouri, the palmeirense Paulo Vinicius Coelho, the cruzeirense Tostão or going further back to diehard Fluminense fan Nelson Rodrigues.

The honesty of revealing your favourite club is not unprofessional, most people, in fact, find it endearing. It shows that beneath the match reports and byline pictures, the journalist is a supporter, too.

I grew up in Glasgow and became a Celtic supporter at an early age. However, since becoming passionate about Brazilian football, to eventually moving here some years ago, I have developed a strong attachment to Palmeiras.

It is often said that supporting more than one football team is impossible. It certainly is possible, although it’s a gradual process. It took me a while to genuinely care for Palmeiras, initially it was more of a fondness, a preference, but as time went on (and realising the fact that my two favourite clubs have virtually zero chance of competing for the same title) that fondness became a passion.

With Celtic out of the Champions League and plodding along unchallenged toward the Scottish title, and Palmeiras stuck in the second tier throughout last year, Sunday’s dérbi paulista between Corinthians and Palmeiras was the first match in a while that I could genuinely get worked up about.

Seeing as I had no journalistic responsibilities during the match, I allowed myself to get a bit carried away. The referee was called every name under the sun (in both English and Portuguese, for a bit of variety), my head was in my hands at Romarinho’s opener and I shouted far too loudly at Alan Kardec’s late equaliser. Those are truly some of the best moments in football, and a part of me is disappointed that I can’t get so involved every week.

In my moments of clarity, I did my best to analyse the game, as after all, the dérbi came at an interesting time for both sides.

What I did notice was a big improvement from Corinthians. Under pressure, coach Mano Menezes broke away from the 4-2-3-1 system that has been used religiously by the Timão in recent years, opting instead for a 4-5-1 with three defensive-minded central midfielders. Newly-instated club captain Ralf held the fort in front of the defence, while Guilherme and debutant Bruno Henrique took turns pushing forward to attack.

Menezes’ objective was clearly to crowd the midfield, seeing as the vast majority of Palmeiras’ attacking play originates from Jorge Valdivia and Wesley. In this respect they were successful and they bossed possession for most of the match.

It will be interesting to see if Menezes sticks to this system outside of the clássico environment. I think the change could suit them: they have some fresh blood in Jadson and Bruno, as well as a different system that doesn’t make drastic changes to their general playing style.

Speaking of Jadson, the on-loan São Paulo man had a strong debut and played an important role as one of Corinthians’ wide midfielders. Without possession, he marked his opposing full-back and pressed centre-backs with the ball, while in attack he looked to drift infield and create attacking moves. He was always aware of his positioning though, which stopped Corinthians from losing their shape.

Palmeiras weren’t anywhere near as dominant as they were in their last clássico, winning 2-0 against São Paulo, but they showed signs of a maturing team and once again proved to be a close-knit unit. Aware that they were forced to surrender the midfield battle to Corinthians’ three centre-midfielders, Gilson Kleina set up his Palmeiras side a bit deeper in order to soak up Corinthians pressure.

Some of their defensive work in the first half was excellent, with a special mention to young centre-back Wellington, who was terrific and looks to be a high-level defender in the making.

Their threat on the counterattack could have been better however. Valdivia and Wesley played fairly decent games, considering the circumstances, and came close to completing some killer passes behind the Corinthians defence, but they were almost always cut out. When Palmeiras did get the ball in advantageous situations, wide attackers Mazinho and Leandro were indecisive, wasteful and generally played poorly.

A disappointing second half cost the Verdão a chance at victory, but their late equaliser shows that they are a committed and mentally tough squad, something which has been lacking at the club in recent years.

Palmeiras coach Gilson Kleina has come under a lot of unwarranted criticism at the start of the season, as the board’s choice to extend his contract during the club’s centenary year was seen by many as being unambitious. The ‘ambitious’ alternative to Kleina was Vanderlei Luxemburgo, a manager, wrapped in an ego, inside an Armani suit, who in 2013 was fired from Grêmio and relegated (albeit not for long) with Fluminense and whose last major trophy came in 2004. Go figure.

Kleina is a relatively new face at the top level of Brazilian football, despite starting his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant to Abel Braga at Coritiba. His first high-profile job came at Campinas club Ponte Preta in 2011, where he won promotion to Série A and had them punching above their weight in 2012. Palmeiras signed him to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari in a doomed attempt at escaping relegation, and last year he brought the Verdão back to the top division, comfortably winning the Série B.

He’s popular amongst the players and has managed to create a healthy atmosphere at the club, despite the presence of some inflated egos. Tactically, he isn’t the most adventurous coach, though his teams always have a defined objective and playing style, which goes a long way in domestic Brazilian football.

It’s difficult to tell how Palmeiras will fare this year, as they have largely been tested against sides at Série B level or lower, but if their performance in these recent matches against São Paulo and Corinthians are anything to go by, palmeirenses such as myself can hope for a very respectable season indeed.
