Copa Libertadores Wrap: Home wins for Gremio, Arsenal

Gremio claimed a three-point lead at the top of Group Six of the Copa Libertadores with a 3-0 win over Atletico Nacional on Tuesday.

Attacking midfielder Ramiro led the way for Gremio, setting up the Brazilian club´s opening goal and then scoring the second before Alan Ruiz wrapped up the victory with a fine solo strike in the 89th minute.

Having accounted for Uruguay´s Nacional in the opening matchday of the group stages, Gremio´s defeat of Atletico Nacional took them to six points, three clear of their Colombian opponents.

Nacional and Newell´s Old Boys will play their second group stage match on Thursday with both sides yet to break their points duck.

Gremio hit the front just before the half-hour mark when Ramiro lifted the ball over Atletico Nacional´s defence and Luan pushed off team-mate Cristian Riveros before lobbing the visiting goalkeeper.

In the 65th minute, Ramiro side-footed home from directly in front of goal after a cutback from left-back Wendell, while substitute Ruiz made it 3-0 with a minute left in regulation time, cutting in from the right on a slaloming run, before tucking the ball inside the near post.

In Group Eight, Arsenal missed a second-half penalty but were still too strong for 10-man Deportivo Anzoategui, winning 3-0.

Anzoategui had Enmanuel Calzadilla sent off just before half-time after the Venezuelan visitors had already fallen two goals behind.

Julio Furch gave Arsenal the lead in the 16th minute with a towering header from a free-kick, while the 24-year-old striker sent another set piece back across goal with two minutes until half-time for Ramiro Carrera to double the home side´s advantage.

Just six minutes into the second half and the Argentine club led 3-0 after yet another header, with Milton Caraglio flicking Hugo Nervo´s long ball over Anzoategui goalkeeper Edixon Gonzalez from the edge of the box.

The win took Arsenal to three points after they lost their opening game to Santos Laguna of Mexico.

Santos top Group Eight with six points after a second win last week, while Arsenal have a two-point gap on Penarol and Anzoategui.

In the other matches on Tuesday, Velez Sarsfield claimed their second victory in a row with a 2-0 triumph over Atletico Paranaense to lead Group One, while Ricardo Goulart scored a hat-trick in Cruzeiro´s 5-1 thrashing of Universidad de Chile in Group Five.

El Tri Hot List: Club America’s national team legion on the slide

GUADALAJARA -- The balance for Mexicans in or around the national team over the past week has been negative overall, mainly because of Club America falling from its seemingly impenetrable perch and losing three consecutive Liga MX games.

With former coach Miguel Herrera looking on in the Estadio Azteca for Las Aguilas’ 3-1 loss against Mexico City rivals Pumas, that base of national team players which helped El Tri breeze past New Zealand last year is looking much less solid than even a couple of months ago.

On a more positive note, there was good news for Mexican youngsters in Europe, with former Tigres midfielder Jorge Espericueta debuting for Villarreal B, Jesus “Tecatito” Corona getting minutes in Holland for Twente and Hector Herrera again starting for Porto.

Warming up

Carlos Pena, M, Leon (Mexico)

Why he’s here: You could’ve been mistaken for thinking there would’ve been some element of fatigue in the hardworking midfielder’s legs during Leon’s 4-2 win over Santos Laguna on Saturday, considering the team from Guanajuato state had played in the altitude of La Paz, Bolivia, midweek. But Pena drove La Fiera to the best performance over 45 minutes from any team in the Liga MX this season, producing a lung-busting run forward from his own half in the 34th minute and finishing for Leon’s third.

What this means: Mexico coach Miguel Herrera will be licking his lips with glee at the midfielder’s performances recently and the fact he has shown a steady improvement over the past 18 months. Pena is an increasingly important figure for the national team.

Oribe Peralta, F, Santos Laguna (Mexico)

Why he’s here: "Hermoso" -- the nickname he seems to be going by these days -- netted his first goal of the Clausura and his first in the Liga MX since Dec. 9 in Santos Laguna’s defeat to Leon.

What this means: Everyone is so used to Peralta banging in goals with regularity that the slowdown in 2014 has been getting attention. But while Javier Hernandez -- his competitor for a starting place with El Tri -- is not getting the playing time to get back some confidence, the Olympic gold-medal hero will play regularly for Santos and it would be no surprise if he now goes on a scoring streak.

Isaac Brizuela, W, Toluca (Mexico)

Why he’s here: Yet another appearance on this list for the 23-year-old, who produced a magical goal in the 89th minute to win Sunday’s game for Toluca against Chivas 1-0.

What this means: Like Pena, Brizuela has been on the rise for some time and his form is threatening the presence of more established names in the national team’s starting lineup.

Cooling down

Juan Carlos Valenzuela, D, Club America (Mexico)

Why he’s here: An error for Pumas’ third goal put the spotlight on Valenzuela’s presence in the national team. On top of an unconvincing performance for America, the pressure is on "Topo."

What this means: Valenzuela held his hands up and admitted his mistake, but added that it was just that and not representative of a drop in form from 2013. Time will tell whether he is correct.

Francisco Rodriguez, D, Club America (Mexico)

Why he’s here: "Maza" was sent off for America in the Estadio Azteca in the 49th minute, with the score at 1-1 and Las Aguilas on top. His act of petulance in even motioning his knee toward Marco Antonio Palacios while waiting for a set piece to be delivered was not what you expect from a player with Rodriguez’s experience. America capitulated after the red card.

What this means: Herrera will sit down and speak to Rodriguez about what happened, but it came at a particularly bad time ahead of the March 5 friendly against Nigeria and with Maza’s spot in the starting XI no guarantee with Diego Reyes’ presence in the squad.

Rafa Marquez Lugo, F, Chivas (Mexico)

Why he’s here: After a 2013 for Chivas in which he perhaps deserved more national team call-ups, Marquez Lugo has not yet completed 90 minutes under coach Jose Luis Real, hasn’t scored in 2013 and is set to be dropped from the starting XI when Aldo de Nigris returns from injury.

What this means: World Cup dreams were already distant for Marquez Lugo, but now it is looking impossible that the Chivas forward gets near the squad.

Fernando Arce, M, Club Tijuana (Mexico)

Why he’s here: The heartbeat of the Xolos side that lifted the Apertura 2012 title, Arce’s form has dipped significantly this season, in part because he has been playing out of position. It culminated in Tijuana’s 3-0 home loss to Chiapas in which Arce was far below the level that fans have come to expect from one of the Liga MX’s most consistent players in recent years.

What this means: Arce has a lot of work to do to get back in contention for the World Cup, with Herrera not having called him in to a squad so far.

Miguel Layun, WB, Club America (Mexico)

Why he’s here: A dislocated shoulder injury means Layun has been pulled out of the Mexico squad to face Nigeria.

What this means: A statement from the Mexican federation on Monday stated that Layun may require surgery on his right shoulder, which could’ve put his World Cup in doubt, but ESPN Mexico reported on Monday that he will be back in action in between three weeks and a month.

Marco Fabian to return to Chivas?

The turn from 2013 to 2014 seems to have marked a line in the sand for Marco Fabian. Gone, at least for now, are the days of negativity, punctuated by inconsistency and regular rumors in Guadalajara about his penchant for partying. Instead, Fabian has impressed week in, week out on the field for Cruz Azul following his loan move from Chivas and must be close to a national team call-up.

Naturally, Chivas owner Jorge Vergara would like this new Fabian back at his club, as he told ESPN´s Raza Deportiva on Monday.

"We would prefer that the buy-out clause option didn´t exist, but we have to respect our word and if Cruz Azul exercise it, we screwed up," stated Vergara. "But if they don´t, he´ll return to Chivas."

When asked if Fabian´s value was over eight million US dollars, the Chivas owner indicated that "it is a little higher, but the clause doesn´t matter at the moment because the important thing is that Marco Fabian consolidates himself and could return to Chivas."

The reality is that if Fabian keeps up this form, Europe beckons, as Cruz Azul´s sporting director Agustin Manzo said on Monday. And if European clubs are lining up, La Maquina could pay the clause and then sell him on for even more money.

It seems that even if Vergara retains hope, there is little chance of seeing Fabian back in a Chivas shirt anytime soon.

Club worth:

According to a report published in Spanish outlet Sport (based on findings by Euromericas Sport Marketing), Guadalajara is worth 625 million dollars and is the most valuable soccer club on the American continent.

Club America, in comparison, was fourth and valued at 456 million dollars, with Santos Laguna (155 million dollars) in tenth.

The study took into account television rights, the value of the playing squad, marketing, sponsorship, ticket sales and other similar criteria.

Five Brazilian clubs dominated the list alongside the three Mexican outfits, with Boca Juniors and LA Galaxy rounding off the top 10.

Toluca reaction:

Isaac Brizuela stole the three points for Toluca against Chivas on Sunday with a late strike to hand the Choriceros a 1-0 win, leaving Guadalajara in sixth place in the Liga MX.

Toluca had the majority of possession and outshot Chivas 12-6, but coach Jose Luis Real left the game happy with his side´s performance.

"The game was as we had planned it, but in the end goals are what counts and Toluca managed one," said Real after the game. "The rest (of the performance) leaves me calm. I know the fans deserve to see Chivas always winning, but the opponent was very difficult and we were close to coming out with a good (result)."

Injury update:

For next Sunday´s clash at home against Tigres, Real will be able to welcome back Gerardo Rodriguez into the starting XI, with the club announcing on Tuesday that he has been given the all-clear from the medical department to resume training with the first team.

The news is less clear-cut for Aldo de Nigris, who missed the game against Toluca with tendinitis. He continues to be a doubt for the Tigres match, although the club said the recovery is coming along well.

Omar Esparza is close to a comeback from his ACL tear and could be involved with the Under-20s on Sunday, while Eduardo Lopez and Jesus Sanchez are set to miss the weekend action.

Gonzalez’s talent, reputation continue to grow

CARSON, California -- After winning two MLS Cups and numerous individual awards, the LA Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez can make a major impact internationally this year.

The defender has become a starter for the United States, which will compete in this July’s World Cup. Prior to the start of that competition, however, Gonzalez and the Galaxy will be in the hunt for another trophy, when they face Club Tijuana in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Success has marked Gonzalez´s career since joining LA as a 20-year old in 2009.

After being named Major League Soccer´s rookie of the year, Gonzalez made the league´s Best 11 in three of the next four campaigns. In 2011, he was named the MLS defender of the year and, a season later, he was the most valuable player of MLS Cup 2012 in the Galaxy’s triumph over the Houston Dynamo.

The past two years, though, have posed multiple challenges. In January 2012, Gonzalez tore a knee ligament while training on loan with Germany´s FC Nurnberg. He returned to action that July, but played in only 14 regular-season games.

"I didn´t see myself getting back to this level," Gonzalez said at the time. "I actually had some days when I was just thinking if I was ever going to come back the same way."

Well, not only did he “come back the same way,” the former University of Maryland Terrapin has reached new heights.

Before the end of April last year, he participated in the Galaxy’s pre-season training, played in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals and semifinals, kicked off the new MLS season and appeared in the opening three games in the final round of World Cup Qualifying.

"You just started the season and you have to get points to qualify for the World Cup," expressed Gonzalez. "Every game matters. That´s pretty difficult."

In the big picture, balancing the different demands of United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Galaxy manager Bruce Arena, proved challenging, as well as beneficial.

"All of those games shifting gears was pretty difficult," Gonzalez noted. "I have to realize what team I´m on and how I need to play. But I think all that helped me recognize things and how I need to keep on learning as a pro."

Learning to adapt quickly was very rewarding.

"I recognize that I can play at the international level," Gonzalez finished. "I belong at this level. I need to keep my confidence up and just keep trying to improve."

Colo Colo Can Equal its Best Start in Seven Years with a Win on Friday

AFTER A MIX OF GRUELLING AND EASY RESULTS, COLO COLO HAS GONE THROUGH THE FIRST EIGHT WEEKS OF THE CLAUSURA TOURNAMENT UNDEFEATED. NOW, THEY WILL HOST COBRESAL ON FRIDAY WITH A CHANCE TO MATCH THE RECORD START OF CLAUDIO BORGHI’S COLO COLO SIDE IN 2007.

MACUL — The fans of Los Albos haven’t tasted a championship for almost five years and have been clamoring for a 30th title. Their side’s victory on sunday against Palestino put them one step closer to that dream with Colo Colo now sitting four points clear at the top of the table. With seven wins and one draw, 24 goals scored and only 10 against, Colo Colo is off to an incredible start to the season.

This blistering pace to the start of a season hasn’t been seen from a Colo Colo side since their championship winning team in 2007. That team kicked off the season with 8 consecutive victories, only to tie the 9th game.

Now, current manager Héctor Tapia has his players ready to equal that impressive tally. A victory against Cobresal at home this weekend would give them 8 wins and 1 tie in their first 9 games, the exact record of the 2007 championship team.

With Colo Colo‘s statistics this season looking eerily similar to that of championship winning sides in 2007, 2008, and 2009, it is not without reason that the fans are showing such excitement. Whether the record start of 2007 can be matched remains to be seen. It all depends on the result this Friday at the Estadio Monumental.

Everton vs Santiago Wanderers Moved to Estadio Santa Laura

THE CLÁSICO BETWEEN THE TWO SEA-SIDE CLUBS WILL BE MOVED TO ESTADIO SANTA LAURA IN SANTIAGO. AFTER SPECULATION OVER THE MOTIVE, IT IS NOW CLEAR IT WAS DONE FOR PURELY FOOTBALLING REASONS.

SANTIAGO — This massive rivalry between Everton of Viña del Mar and Santiago Wanderers of Valparaíso was scheduled to take place Sunday at 17:00 in Quillota. However, this match for the Chilean league will not take place in either of the coastal cities.

Emol has Everton‘s president, Juan Pablo Salgado, quoted as saying the change was only “for a sporting aspect”, adding, “after the game with Unión Española the coach, Nelson Acosta, asked us to play the game against Santiago Wanderers in Estadio Santa Laura, because the team plays much better on natural grass.”

Everton currently sit third from the bottom and have a long, difficult road ahead of them if they wish to escape the relegation zone. Yet the team did register an impressive 3-1 victory against Unión Española in their last outing, and winger Jorge Romo believes “the victory against Unión allows [the team] to arrive at the clásico with a much better mindset.”

Santiago Wanderers also come into this game off a victory, a 1-0 defeat of Unión La Calera, and currently sit at eighth in the table. While eighth is much higher than their coastal neighbors, the Valparaíso club will look to continue to scale the table and a victory in this highly anticipated derby could give valuable momentum to either side.

Cruzeiro havde dog let spil over for La U´s 3-mandsforsvar.
