CONCACAF Champions League Wrap: Toluca, Cruz Azul progress

Toluca advanced to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League after overcoming a stubborn San Jose side in a penalty shootout.

Shea Salinas missed the decisive penalty for San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday with his spot-kick coming back off the crossbar.

The 27-year-old midfielder´s miss saw Toluca prevail 5-4 in the shootout, after the two-legged tie had finished 2-2 on aggregate.

Toluca dominated the second leg at home and took 23 shots to the Earthquakes´ five but the visitors were the first to score when defender Ty Harden nodded Salinas´ free-kick into the net in the 56th minute.

Isaac Brizuela´s thumping long-range strike dragged Toluca level with 21 minutes left in normal time but although the hosts continued to pressure, San Jose held out with goalkeeper Jon Busch making some impressive saves.

After a goalless extra-time period, Busch gave the Earthquakes the upper hand when he saved Toluca´s first penalty from Raul Nava but the home side´s gloveman Alfredo Talavera responded immediately with a stop of this own, thwarting Chris Wondolowski.

Each side converted their next four spot-kicks with Talavera stepping up to slot Toluca´s fifth past Busch.

As the shootout headed to sudden death, Busch almost saved Wilson Tiago´s penalty but could only parry the ball onto the underside of the bar and it bounced back onto the line before spinning into the net.

The home fans breathed a sigh of relief and then screamed for joy as Salinas missed to end the Earthquakes´ hopes.

In the other quarter-final second leg on Wednesday, Cruz Azul overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to triumph 5-2 on aggregate against Sporting Kansas City.

Mariano Pavone scored a hat-trick for the Liga MX outfit, while Mauro Formica and Christian Gimenez also got on the scoresheet as Cruz Azul thrashed Sporting in Mexico.

Pavone struck in the second minute and scored again in the 23rd minute before Benny Feilhaber pulled a goal back just ahead of the break.

At 2-2 on aggregate, Sporting would have become the only MLS club to stay in the competition on the away-goals rule, after San Jose and Los Angeles Galaxy were also eliminated by Mexican sides.

But 10 minutes after half-time, Pavone toe-poked Sergio Napoles´ cross into the net to complete his hat-trick and put the hosts in front, before Formica and Gimenez struck to end Kansas City´s resistance.

Liga MX Preview: Leon, Cruz Azul meet in key clash

Leon and Cruz Azul will clash in Liga MX on Saturday hoping to build on their respective continental successes.

Cruz Azul advanced to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday after thrashing Sporting Kansas City 5-1 to triumph 5-2 on aggregate, while Leon defeated Emelec 3-0 in the Copa Libertadores to move top of their group.

Matias Britos, Jose Vasquez and Carlos Pena scored Leon´s goals against Emelec, while Mariano Pavone struck a hat-trick for Cruz Azul.

Leon´s win ended their losing streak at three games and Gustavo Matosas´ men will hope it can inspire them against the Liga MX leaders on Saturday.

Cruz Azul are flying high in the Mexican league with nine wins from 11 games in the Clausura campaign, but they have lost their past two away games in all competitions, which could give Leon something to work with.

Leon have won three of their past four matches at home and sit 10th in Liga MX on 14 points - exactly half of Cruz Azul´s total.

The other Mexican clubs involved in continental competition this week - Santos Laguna, Toluca and Tijuana - also tasted success.

Santos Laguna trumped Deportivo Anzoategui 3-0 in the Copa Libertadores to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to four games but will need to refocus quickly ahead of a trip to Morelia on Friday, while Tijuana will host Puebla after overcoming Los Angeles Galaxy 4-3 on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Toluca edged out San Jose Earthquakes in a penalty shootout to reach the final four of the Champions League and will line-up against Atlante on Sunday.

In other games, America will welcome Veracruz to Mexico City, Tigres UANL face Queretaro, Pachuca take on Chiapas, Atlas will clash with Guadalajara and Monterrey will visit Pumas UNAM.

Copa Libertadores Wrap: Gremio snatch point at Newell´s

http://www.youtube.com/w…1eKFSndX5NM

A stoppage-time header from Luiz Rhodolfo saw Gremio snatch a 1-1 draw against Newell´s Old Boys in the Copa Libertadores.

Gremio looked set to lose for the first time in Group 6 on Wednesday after Maxi Rodriguez had given Newell´s the lead with 11 minutes remaining.

But the Brazilian visitors responded in the first minute of second-half stoppage time when Rhodolfo nodded Hernan Barcos´ cross into the net.

The draw saw Gremio (eight points) regain top spot after Atletico Nacional (seven) had claimed the lead on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory at Uruguay´s Nacional (one).

After a goalless first half in Rosario, Argentina, Newell´s gave the home fans something to cheer about in the 79th minute when Gremio failed to clear their defensive penalty area and Rodriguez pounced to slam the loose ball into the net.

Gremio´s unbeaten run in the 2014 Copa Libertadores looked set to end until Barcos picked up the ball on the left wing, cut onto his right foot and his in-swinging cross glanced off Rhodolfo´s forehead and into the bottom corner of the net.

The result left Newell´s in third in Group 6 on five points.

In Group 7, Mexico´s Leon thrashed Emelec 3-0 to leapfrog the Ecuadorians but had to wait until the final 10 minutes to wrap up the victory.

A powerful header from Matias Britos put Leon ahead in the 20th minute but the hosts did not double their lead until Jose Juan Vazquez´s penalty with eight minutes remaining.

Just four minutes later and Carlos Pena made it 3-0 to give Leon their second win of the group stage, with the Liga MX outfit claiming top spot in their group with seven points.

Emelec (six points) sit second, while Bolivar (five) defeated Flamengo (four) 1-0 to rise above the Brazilian club.

Penarol claimed their first victory of the continental competition´s group stage with a 2-1 triumph over Arsenal and defending champions Atletico Mineiro were held 1-1 at home by Nacional Asuncion.

Pis..

The race for the fourth playoff spot heats up

The race for the fourth and final playoff spot of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) got even more interesting following today´s four midweek games across the island.

With Montego Bay United (45), Harbour View (42) and Waterhouse (42) basically securing three of the four playoff spots, the battle for fourth got really hot after

Sporting Central Academy, Humble Lion and Portmore United all secure crucial wins.

In a very intriguing encounter at Juici Patties Park in Clarendon, home team Sporting Central scored two very late goals to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win over Tivoli Gardens leaving both teams levelled on 34 points in joint fifth spot. They are one points behind the inactive Arnett Gardens on 35 and currently occupying the final playoff spot.

Francois Swaby gave Sporting Central a sixth minute lead from the penalty spot but Tivoli Gardens responded with a penalty of their own converted by Kemar Flemmings in the 14th minute before Kaemmar Daley gave them the lead in the 69th minute.

With time running out, it appeared that Tivoli Gardens would secure an important away win and leapfrog Arnett Gardens into fourth spot but Sporting Central had other ideas. Swaby grabbed his second goal of the match in the 90th minute and with basically the last kick of the game, Cory Hylton found the clincher in the 90+4 minute and broke the heart of the Tivoli fans.

However, the Clarendon stayed in sixth spot on 34 points and are only behind fifth placed Tivoli Gardens on goal difference.

Meanwhile Portmore United climbed into seventh spot on 32 points with a comprehensive 4-0 whipping of 10-men Cavalier at Stadium East field.

The former champions who have been in the relegation zone for most of the season, are finally hitting their strides and will be a dangerous team for the rest of the season.

Ewan Grandison 14th, Stephen Williams 34th, Andrew Vanzie 35th and Andrew Christie 68th pushed Portmore United to their eighth victory and onto 32 points. There are just three points off a playoff spot, something which looked unlikely a few weeks ago.

At Wespow Park in St James, the visiting Humble Lion also increased their chances of making the top four with an impressive 2-0 demolition of leaders Montego Bay United.

Roberto Fletcher opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Omando McLeod sealed the win in minute 43 as they moved to 32 points, the same as Portmore United and into eighth spot.

Montego Bay remained at the top on 45 points and could be joined by both Waterhouse and Harbour View who both have games in hand.

At the Bramwell Clarke Sports Complex, designated home team Rivoli United and Boys Town battled to a 0-0 stalemate and inched away from bottom placed August Town who were inactive. Boys Town stayed in 10th spot on 28 points, the same as Rivoli United in 11th place. August Town are at the bottom with 24 points.

The RSPL will take a break to accommodate the playing of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Clubs Championship which will involve both Harbour View and Waterhouse over the next few days.

Corinthians show remarkable lack of Corinthian spirit

With the four big sides of the São Paulo region arbitrarily kept apart in separate groups in the new-fangled state championship (don’t ask), progress to the next round was expected to be a formality. After all, even under the old system – which admittedly only lasted four years – not once had any of the big guns failed to make the knockout stages.

But Corinthians have never been a team to shy away from an early-season crisis. They went into the weekend in danger of becoming the first high-profile side to come unstuck in this year’s truncated estaduais, sitting third in their section behind Botafogo-SP and Ituano.

Qualification was not out of reach, but it was out of their hands. To stay in contention heading into the final round of the group stage, the Timão needed to avoid defeat against Penapolense on Sunday and then hope for a favour from bitter rivals São Paulo, 3-2 winners in the clássico a week earlier.

Corinthians started on the front foot in Penápolis, Jádson and Luciano (who bears all the hallmarks of being this year’s Bright Young Thing) buzzing around with intent. The breakthrough, though, would not come. Then came the news all Corinthianos feared. Ituano had scored at the Morumbi. Esquerdinha (´Little Lefty´) had beaten Rogério Ceni with one fateful swish of his right boot.

That would turn out to be the only goal scored in either match. Corinthians huffed and puffed but could not muster a winner; São Paulo, who had already secured their place in the second round, were far from their best and never really looked like recovering from going behind.

The real drama would only begin at the full-time whistle, when, in entirely predictably fashion, Corinthians cried foul. Romarinho was the first out of the gate, letting out a classic loser’s moan before even leaving the pitch.

“We knew this was going to happen,” he whined. “We knew they’d let them win. I think they’re scared of us.”

Coach Mano Menezes also piped up: “Every one of us has to live with his own conscience. The gods of football are watching and know how to deal with these things. Let’s see what they decide to do.”

In reality, of course, the vast majority of the blame lies with Corinthians themselves. It was neither São Paulo nor some all-seeing deity, for example, that inflicted four straight defeats on the Timão early on in the Paulistão. And it was Romarinho himself who spurned a golden chance to earn his side three points at the weekend.

Talk of collusion and such like is frustratingly de rigueur in the Brazilian game, with both fans and the clubs themselves happy to conjure conspiracy theories to obscure their own shortcomings. These imprecise grumblings tend to accumulate and morph together, blossoming into a feeling of persecution that has little to do with events as they actually occurred.

In a country whose football rivalries have been known to spill into mindless violence, players and managers might be wise to keep their thoughts to themselves.

Jury’s out

The same principle also applies to members of Brazil’s judiciary. A number of Corinthians fans who were being held for invading the club’s training complex in February (another earthly contributor in their side’s poor form, no doubt) were released this week by an official who, judging by his accompanying statement, represents the depressingly boorish demographic that tends to shout loudest in all matters futebol.

“It was nothing more than a protest,” said apparent judge Gilberto Azevedo Morais Costa. “They are loyal fans who just wanted to call attention to the issues… to make the players earn their wages and play proper Brazilian football.”

You wonder just what that latter point has to do with a bunch of thugs threatening (and, according to some reports, attacking) players. Another issue brushed under the carpet with minimal justification.
