Copa Libertadores Wrap: The Strongest, Independiente equalise late on

The Strongest came from two goals down to deny Universitario their first Copa Libertadores win in a 3-3 draw on Thursday.

https://www.youtube.com/…GUeoKovB29E

When Edwuin Gomez converted a penalty for Universitario just before the hour mark, the home side led 3-1 and looked on track to triumph in Peru.

But The Strongest reduced the hosts´ margin soon after through Ernesto Cristaldo and the visitors capped off their comeback with Jair Reinoso´s last-minute strike.

Reinoso´s late heroics appropriately wrapped up a match full of drama and a healthy dose of farce in Group One.

The home side opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Raul Ruidiaz cut inside his marker to finish from close range but Universitario´s lead did not last long, as Alejandro Chumacero won a penalty for The Strongest three minutes later.

The home side´s goalkeeper Jose Carvallo saved both Pablo Escobar´s penalty and his follow-up effort before Nelvin Soliz´s shot was blocked on the line. The ball rebounded to Reinoso and, although he could not control it, his poor touch ricocheted off Universitario´s Diego Chavez and into the net.

The hosts recovered quickly though, as Christopher Gonzalez thrashed the ball into the net in the 38th minute, and the Peruvian club extended their lead 12 minutes after half-time thanks to Gomez´s spot kick.

The Strongest entered the match having lost their previous two away matches in the Copa Libertadores but began to believe they could avoid defeat when Cristaldo got free at the back post to head Escobar´s cross home in the 66th minute.

Cristaldo also helped create the equaliser, picking out Escobar in the box and the attacking midfielder spun on the ball, sending a first-time cross to the back post where Reinoso completed a simple finish.

The draw saw The Strongest move to seven points, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive, as they sit third, two points behind second-placed Atletico Paranaense, who the Bolivians host on the final matchday.

In Ecuador, Independiente del Valle scored an even later equaliser with Junior Sornoza making no mistake from the spot in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to clinch a 1-1 draw with San Lorenzo.

https://www.youtube.com/…Mf92uaqK2lU

Nicolas Blandi´s header from a corner had given San Lorenzo the lead in the 58th minute but after defending desperately in Quito, the Argentine visitors eventually conceded when Emanuel Mas almost kicked Independiente´s Fernando Guerrero in the head.

The referee awarded a penalty and Sornoza scored with the last kick of the match.

San Lorenzo´s furious players then attempted to surround referee Carlos Amarilla to dispute the decision but the local riot police poured onto the pitch to protect the match officials and rather violently pushed the visitors away.

The draw left both teams on five points at the bottom of Group Two with Botafogo top of the standings with seven.

In the other match, Lanus defeated Cerro Porteno 2-0 to go top of a congested Group Two.

Lanus are level on seven points with Cerro Porteno and Deportivo Cali, who are all just one ahead of O´Higgins heading into the final matchday.

Club Tijuana faces Liga MX, CCL challenges

TIJUANA, Mexico – As the team continues pushing for a spot in the domestic playoffs and a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) final, the next few days are critical for Club Tijuana.

In the Liga MX Clausura standings, the Xolos are in a four-way tie for sixth place on 17 points, but do not currently occupy a playoff position due to inferior goal difference. That could all change after Friday’s visit to Queretaro.

A win would move Tijuana into the top eight, while a loss – combined with a series of other results – could potentially drop them down as low as 14th place.

Then, on Tuesday, the 2012 Apertura champion welcomes Cruz Azul to the Estadio Caliente for the first leg of their all-Mexican CCL semifinal series.

The stakes couldn’t be higher, but midfielder Javier Guemez is taking a measured approach during this decisive period.

"We go with the mentality of getting points and follow the right track looking for the objective of advancing to the next round of the tournament," said the 22-year-old.

Offensively, Tijuana has been in good form as of late, scoring a combined seven goals in its last two games -- wins over the LA Galaxy (4-2) and Puebla (3-1). On the other side of the ball, though, it has posted only one shutout in its last 10 outings.

That’s one trend Guemez would like to see reversed.

"We want to keep it zero on our goal and we want to make a good game in that sense,” he expressed. “We are working hard to reach a place in playoffs and it will be very important to be solid in defense and know to score when opportunities present themselves.”

In the most important games, opportunities can be few and far between. In order for Tijuana to achieve its goals this season, they must be seized immediately.

CFU Club Championship Recap: March 25, 2014

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Bayamon FC and Waterhouse claimed semifinal places in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship, finishing first in their groups following the conclusion of opening round action on Tuesday.

Group 1 (Bayamon, Puerto Rico)

Group 1 play ended with three teams in a tie for first place on five points each, but Bayamon FC progressed on superior goal difference.

The Vaqueros, who drew 1-1 with Unite Saint Rosienne (USR) of Guadeloupe, posted a 5-0 win over the Cayman Islands’ Bodden Town in the tournament opener for each on Friday. That result proved to be the deciding factor as it ultimately provided the Puerto Rican side with a final +5 cushion to overcome Centro Dominguito (+2) and USR (+1).

Needing only a draw to advance, Bayamon took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute through Juan Velez. Just when it appeared as if the host would take full points, USR’s Loic Roman equalized in the second minute of stoppage time, making for a tense final few moments.

In the first game of the evening, Centro Dominguito reached the table’s summit temporarily with a 4-2 victory over Bodden Town. Bernardus Shayron (52’, 71’) netted a brace in a winning effort, while the Curacao-based side also got an early goal from Kemoy Reid (3’) and was aided by a Santangelo Bush (50’) own-goal.

After being shutout in its first two games, Bodden Town tallied twice on strikes from Tevon Levien (35’) and Wesley Robinson (58’).

Group 2 (Mirebalais, Haiti)

At the Stade Bayas, Waterhouse confirmed its semifinal status with a 4-0 win over Caledonia AIA. The result ended the Trinidadian side’s bid for a third straight appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Kenroy Howell (34’) scored the first half’s only goal as the Jamaicans sealed the victory with three second-half strikes.

After the break, Romario Campbell (50’) and Juvaune Benjamin (78’) netted their second goals of the competition, while Kimorlie Brisset (87’) punctuated the scoreline late.

Waterhouse concluded Group 2 play with a perfect 3-0-0 record, scoring an impressive 10 goals and conceding only three.

In the nightcap, a crowd of 2,500 watched AS Mirebalais secure its first points of the tournament with a 2-1 win over Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe. Woodwige Gauthier (45’) and Leandro Antonio Campos Mendes (69’) netted a goal each in a winning effort, while Amakitie Massie (31’) was on target for the Surinamese side.

Group 3 (Harbour View, Jamaica)

Trinidad & Tobago international Devorn Jorsling (55’, 86’) hit for a second-half double to give Defence Force a 2-0 victory over host Harbour View.

With only pride at stake after Guyana’s Alpha United won group on Sunday, Defence Force was boosted by the observance of a minute of silence to remember former player Kevon Carter, who passed away last month.

News and Notes

The semifinals will be played between Alpha United, Bayamon FC, Waterhouse and first-round bye recipient Valencia of Haiti at a site to be determined, starting on April 16. The eventual finalists and winner of the match for third place will qualify for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Junior join title race, Atletico Nacional slip up

Junior moved to within five points of the top of the Colombian Primera A as they pulled off a late 2-1 win over Uniautonoma on Thursday.

https://www.youtube.com/…wyk0TpwGclA

After conceding a penalty in just the fifth minute and having defensive midfielder Yhonny Ramirez sent off with 20 minutes remaining, Junior claimed victory at Uniautonoma´s Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez thanks to Vladimir Hernandez´s late strike.

With league leaders Atletico Nacional losing 2-0 away to Atletico Huila on Wednesday, Junior´s victory took them to within five points of the summit as the Colombian title race tightened up.

Uniautonoma took an early lead against Junior thanks to Alan Navarro´s penalty and took their lead into the half-time interval.

On the hour mark, Edison Toloza equalised for the visitors after good lead-up work from Luis Quinones but Junior´s hopes of victory were dealt a blow when Ramirez received his second yellow card 10 minutes later.

Despite going down to 10 men, Junior kept chasing the game and in the 85th minute, Hernandez scored the winner, sliding in at the back post to poke Juan Guillermo Dominguez´s attempted shot into the net.

Junior rose to fifth with the win on 21 points, just behind fourth-placed Santa Fe, who lost 1-0 at Envigado.

Also on Wednesday, Huila struck late in both halves to trump Nacional with Jean Carlos Blanco and Hernan Herchalar scoring the goals.

Nacional (26 points) remain top of the Primera A table with 26 points, two ahead of Millonarios, while Once Caldas, Santa Fe and Junior are all on 21.
