Ecuador Primera A: Olmedo 1 Emelec 1

Ecuador Primera A leaders Emelec needed a fortunate late goal from Angel Mena to claim a 1-1 draw at Olmedo on Wednesday.

After Cristian Palacios had given Olmedo a 1-0 lead at half-time in the catch-up match, Emelec salvaged a point in Riobamba when Mena´s 81st-minute cross from the left wing looped over the hosts´ goalkeeper and inside the back post.

The draw extended Emelec´s undefeated run to four games with the Primera A´s top team leading by seven points from LDU Loja.

Olmedo have not won in the same length of time and sit eighth in the table with 18 points.

Emelec have 34 points after 15 games with a goal difference of plus 19, putting them well ahead of Loja (27, plus two) and third-placed Independiente del Valle (25, plus four).

With the rest of the Primera A playing their Round 15 matches over the weekend, Emelec and Olmedo had a game in hand leading into Wednesday´s fixture.

Olmedo opened the scoring in the 28th minute with Palacios getting on the end of a clever flick, before finishing across Emelec´s goalkeeper and into the far corner.

The hosts looked set to hold on for a rare win as Emelec struggled, only for the leaders to eventually equalise through Mena.

The two teams are set to do battle again on Sunday with Olmedo on the road at Emelec in Round 16.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Saprissa, Alajuelense into final

There was more late drama in Costa Rica´s Primera Division on Wednesday, with Deportivo Saprissa and Alajuelense winning their semi-finals.

Alajuelense came from 1-0 down in their second leg at home to Herediano, to win 3-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate to reach the Clausura final.

The rivalry between the two clubs has been a fierce one of late, with Alajuelense denying Herediano in four Apertura finals since 2010 before beating them in the semi-final stage on Wednesday to preserve their dominance in the Provincial Classic.

Dave Myrie had put Herediano ahead at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, only for three quick-fire goals from the hosts to turn the tie on its head.

Just as they had done in the first leg, when Ariel Rodriguez equalised on 87 minutes away at Herediano, Alajuelense produced goals from Johan Venegas (84th minute), Alejandro Alpizar (89th) and Jose Ortiz (90th) to kill off the visitors.

Venegas´ goal squared the tie, and it was headed for extra-time before Alpizar´s intervention and Ortiz´s sealer.

Deportivo Saprissa await Alajuelense for their ´Costa Rican Classic´ final, after a 4-2 aggregate win over UCR.

Saprissa won their second leg at their Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma home 2-0, although the tie was only killed off proper when Hansell Arauz doubled their advantage on the night on 89 minutes.

Carlos Saucedo had earlier put Saprissa in a strong position, with his 29th-minute opener resulting in UCR requiring two goals to advance.

The two-legged final kicks off on May 10, with the second leg a week later.

Alajuelense are vying to become the most successful club in Costa Rica´s history, as they sit level with Saprissa on 29 trophies after the former won the 2013 Apertura title over Herediano in December.

Hvorfor, hvorfor :( Tre sene mål ødelagde det hele. Nu skal La Liga gå hele vejen, så kommer Herediano i Concachampions.
Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Jeg havde dog ikke forventet at de ville vinde i Alajuela.

Leon 1-1 Cruz Azul: All Square Between Champs & League Leaders

Leon came back from an early setback to earn a well-deserved 1-1 with Cruz Azul at the Estadio Leon on Wednesday evening.

The game pitted the newly-crowned CONCACAF champions against the reigning Mexican league champions, with fans of both sides uncertain about who would emerge victorious.

Leon had been difficult to accurately assess this season after prioritizing the Copa Libertadores over the Clausura, while Cruz Azul’s large lead in the league table afforded them the luxury of resting players in the Clausura to keep them fresh for the continental assignments.

Cruz Azul evidently knew that Leon’s eighth placed finish belied their quality as they looked to begin quickly and silence the partisan crowd. They got the dream start when Argentine Mariano Pavone broke the deadlock after just three minutes. The striker got on the end of Rogelio Chavez’s free kick to flick the ball past the helpless William Yarbrough from eight yards out.

Instead of motivating the side, the goal seemed to make Cruz Azul play with a tension and nervousness that had been unseen throughout 2014 - as Leon slowly exerted a growing pressure.

Montes and Boselli both went close, but it was Jose Maria "Chema" Cardenas who eventually grabbed the inevitable equalizer after twenty minutes. Following some intricate build-up play Mauro Boselli executed a perfect back-heel to wrong-foot Julio Domínguez and leave the ball in the path of the Mexican defender - with Cardenas drilling it in from 18 yards.

The remainder of the half saw veteran center back Rafa Marquez play an important role. Leon were unlucky not to grab their second when Boselli couldn´t stretch far enough to turn in Marquez’s header, while at the other end the Mexican captain did well to cut out Joao Rojas’ dangerous cross on thirty five minutes and make a vital intervention on Pavone when he broke free just two minutes later.

The second half failed to begin at the same frenetic pace as the first period, with both sides seemingly more concerned about conceding than scoring.

There was drama in the 62nd minute when loanee Marco Fabian almost turned Peña’s cross into his own goal, and Cruz Azul came close to scoring a second own goal with fifteen minutes remaining when a ricochet between Jesus Corona and Dominguez nearly saw the ball end up in the back of the net.

At the other end Juan Gonzalez was Leon’s standout performer, twice making an important block to prevent Yarbrough from being tested. Yarbrough himself had a quiet game, though he made an excellent late save from Ismael Valadez’s long range effort.

Jesus Corona was arguably Man Of The Match as he made a string of great saves throughout the game to keep Cruz Azul in the tie - though Leon’s Rafa Marquez was also impressive. His defensive organisation and potent attacking threat are both qualities that El Tri will be very grateful of in Brazil.

The teams go again at 8:00pm EST (7:00pm local Mexico time) in the Estadio Azul in Mexico City. The away goals rule means Cruz Azul have a slender advantage, though they will be aware that a Leon goal could quickly change the complexion of the tie.

Nacional - Arsenal

Atl. Mineiro/Atl Nacional - Defensor

Lanus - Bolivar

San Lorenzo - Cruzeiro
