There won´t be many surprises when Brazil squad is revealed

The suspense will finally end on May 7.

The game of dancing chairs that is the announcement of Brazil’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad will likely disappoint on Wednesday. Not only because very few new names have crept up into Luiz Felipe Scolari’s lists since the manager started coaching the team at the end of 2012 but also because he has been surprisingly busy firing spoilers.

In the last few weeks, the Seleção manager has pretty much announced almost all of the names in the 23-men group that will aim to contend for Brazil’s sixth world title and their first at home soil.

Scolari’s strategy has been simple.

Given the enormity of the task ahead and the fact this current crop of players is marked by their lack of World Cup action, the man wants to spare his players from any unnecessary tensions. Which is why his last trip to Europe in early April included more than observing his men plying their trade in the UEFA Champions League and major European leagues. Alongside technical director Carlos Alberto Parreira, Big Phil made sure he met with some of the players and made sure those encounters made their way into social media platforms.

For example, when the Seleção duo visited London after stopping in Paris for the first leg of the quarterfinal between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, a smiley picture with the “Chelsea Four” -- Oscar, David Luiz, Ramires and Willian -- alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Paulinho went up on twitter. A couple of days later, Parreira showed up alongside Bayern Munich’s Dante and Rafinha in an image released by Brazilian Football Confederation.

But Big Phil has been using words more than images. In a recent event about sports psychology in Sao Paulo, the manager pretty much revealed nine players who will be on the team. While it is hardly unexpected that Neymar, Thiago Silva, Fred, Julio Cesar and the London quintet would make it to the list except in case of a massive misfortune, it certainly breaks a bit of the protocol. Brazil´s selection decorum was then duly pulverized by the announcement CBF will not even release the list of seven substitutes that could make it to the squad as replacements in case of injury until June 2nd.

“I have 22 names ready in my mind. I have no real doubts (about the last one) but I am waiting for the remaining of the season to finish just in case. Nobody, not even my wife knows the full list, but there won’t be great novelties," the manager said quite casually in an interview to Globo TV a week ago.

That has been pretty much the hunch in the Brazilian media anyway. After scooping the Seleção out of a well of self-doubt last year and boosting their FIFA ranking, Big Phil has been somehow blessed by the absence of massive dips of form or nasty injuries so far. That means that he hasn´t had to consider tinkering around his squad. He was also lucky that no real "injustice," (a player who has been snubbed for example) has been pointed out in the last few months and will certainly be relieved by how Ronaldinho’s form has dipped enough to smother the lobby for the return of the 2002 World Cup winner.

It does not mean the manager hasn’t got problems.

The biggest question mark so far is Cesar’s form after nine months with no football at QPR and what can be almost described as a one-night stand at MLS. Still, the move to Toronto FC was enough to convince Big Phil and Parreira -- indeed the men responsible for the return of the former Inter Milan goalie to the Seleção -- that their No. 1 won’t be too rusty come June. Botafogo’s Jefferson and Fluminense´s Diego Cavalieri should complete the goalkeeping trio.

The back four are not free from controversies either.

While few would argue against Silva, Luiz and Dante making the trip, albeit the former frequent use as a midfielder at Chelsea and the latter nightmarish display against Real Madrid in the Champions League raises some questions. Which may be the reason why the absence of Atletico Madrid’s solid center-back Miranda hasn’t gone unnoticed. But so far, PSG’s Marquinhos seems to be edging towards the fourth spot, benefiting from his club familiarity with captain Silva and his ability to deputize as a defensive midfielder.

Moving on to the full-backs. Dani Alves is the only certainty on the right. His experience at the last World Cup, being one of four players in Scolari´s current squad to feature in South Africa in 2010 (Ramires, Cesar and Maicon being the other three as Silva never left the bench) will be a needed benefit for the team.

Maicon, the first choice right back four years ago, appeared to be back to the fold but has recently lost some ground to Rafinha, a younger and less injury-prone option than the Roma man. However, the Munich man hasn’t covered himself in glory lately and that three-game suspension for deciding to absentmindedly scratch Dortmund´s Henrik Mkhitaryan in the face could prove costly.

At the left back position, Marcelo should get the nod, despite having to watch Real Madrid’s last three UEFA Champions League games from the bench thanks to Carlo Ancelotti’s preference for Fabio Coentrao. His backup could be PSG’s Maxwell, who has impressed Big Phil enough to close the door on impressive Atletico starter, Filipe Luís.

If there´s an area where Brazil won´t have too many complications, it´s in midfield. The Luiz Gustavo/Paulinho partnership worked wonders in the Confederations Cup. Fernadinho’s season at Manchester City earned him a much belated cap in March and he impressed his manager by showing his versatility. He showed that he can step into both Gustavo’s guard-dog role and Paulinho’s more attacking role in the midfield. And then there´s Ramires and Willian, who offer stamina and impetus. Lastly at the No. 10 role, only those who spent the last two years in Antarctica will not know Oscar´s important role of playmaking for the Seleção.

Upfront, Neymar is the man, Brazil´s top scorer in the last four years. Fred gets in probably on the hope that he will repeat his display at the Confederations Cup, while former Man City and Everton Jo is a mysterious case of poor club form combined with solid form for country. He could be an important backup especially if Fred’s legs are too heavy.

Shakhtar’s Bernard and Zenit’s Hulk, if chosen, offer Scolari the option to play down the wing with speed (Bernard) or sheer strength laced with a mean left-foot (Hulk). But both men might be weary of Liverpool´s impressive starlet Phillipe Coutinho, Scolari has certainly followed the reborn former Inter prodigy. His addition to the squad has been advocated this week by nobody less than the great Gerson, “The Golden Leftie” of the 1970 Brazil squad.

So who will get the last place up for grabs?

It looks unlikely that a massive surprise like Kaka’s return will take place, although the AC Milan man international mileage and influence over the group are valuable. After two years observing Big Phil’s Seleção, his decision to recall Robinho last November stood out as the bigger gamble. The use of one of Brazil’s most capped players paid off however, albeit friendlies against Honduras and a jet-lagged Chile should hardly be a definite measure of success.

The AC Milan attacker offered a tactical plan B where a false-nine replaces a more traditional center-forward. And Robinho is a veteran of two World Cups and over 20 international goals. His return looks more plausible than Scolari resorting to another midfielder, such as Inter’s Hernanes or even Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva. Or even the more attacking option of another PSG player, Lucas Moura, whose Seleção cred has been fizzling out since 2012.

The answer to all of these questions will come on Wednesday.

America´s season ended with a walk of shame

Antonio “El Turco” Mohamed has met his destiny, the very same destiny that he created and chose for himself. When leading a team, such as América, which has had two years of dominance, one’s own battle cry cannot be so weak.

As Mohamed considered his future he was reported to have said: “When coaching América, I have a lot to lose and little to gain.” A statement that proved to be quite prophetic. He lost a lot, in fact he lost everything, and nobody won anything. Everything related to América, including the fans have been condemned.

To quote Plutarch: “An army of deer led by a lion is more feared than an army of lions led by a deer.”

Firstly, we should praise Santos. Even in their football they fight till the death. They give it their all during every game, and still, they play to kill or die trying. And sometimes they succeed in killing, as was the case this Saturday, in what was quite a dramatic performance. Likewise, they are often seen to be on their deathbed, such as was the case in the last few minutes of the game on Saturday.

In the end, all this culminated in Santos demonstrating what they truly are: a crazed Caixinha, with his scrawny appearance, celebrating like a madman at his team’s success at advancing to the semifinals, very much in the same style of his mentor Mourinho. He owed this victory to his people, to his team, to himself.

Now back to America, let´s review the mistakes committed by Mohamed.

1. He has destroyed the foundations of the Mexican national team; a back four with the least goals conceded over the last two years, has been left disgraced.

Are the players not performing to their full potential? Of course; players respond to coherent instructions from their coach.

Mohamed wanted to play as Miguel Herrera, when not once did he act like him as a coach. Quite ironic seeing as he always sought to do this as a footballer. The problem was not just about improvising positions, the players, their location on the pitch, but his stubborn attempts to get players to play in ways they had not been trained to.

2. It was far too late on, when he finally understood and accepted the conditions and positions of the likes of Raúl Jiménez, Rubens Sambueza and Luis Gabriel Rey.

He was never really willing to make full use of this bewildering arsenal that “El Piojo” had created: wing players, who over the last two years, have shown that they are capable of dropping in when needed yet almost simultaneously creating chances for an attack. And with that element of surprise, of added risk, América annihilated its opponents. Let us not forget, that in fact with only nine men, “El Piojo’s” America destroyed Mohamed’s Xolos in Tijuana.

3. He chose the reinforcements. For reasons widely speculated and deserving of an investigation, Mohamed took quite a fancy to the second rate player Andrés Ríos and one such Pablo Aguilar, who in the words of “El Turco” when in attack would serve to destroy both forwards and defense.

He himself agreed: he was given the players he asked for. Those who he believed were essential to bolster the team, which he had inherited, a team who over the last two years had accumulated an impressive array of wins.

As one América fan put it rather bluntly; they gave him a steamroller and this Saturday he has returned with a ladies epilator.

4. Did he not show off that he had a box full of tricks, from set pieces to tactical set plays, which when you come to think about it, aren’t they the same thing?

Thus América have ended up wanting to get rid of him, unable to corroborate whether he really did possess such versatility and virtuosity. This indicates that either he did not work hard enough, consistently enough or was not compelling enough so as to inject his players with such skills.

Should he continue? The decision must be taken immediately. Yet the problem remains, that the bulk of the team will receive such news, after the holidays in July, after the World Cup, when there will be no time for the customary pre-season training.

Regardless of what is to come, for now Mohamed has been sentenced to a death of his choosing, “I have a lot to lose and little to gain as coach of América.”

For two years, a lion led the deer to respect and acclaim. In less than four months, a deer has led the lions to shame and degradation.

Honduras Announces 23-Man Roster for Brazil World Cup

There was no real surprises for the Honduran National Team as they made their 23-man World Cup list official. After some long-winded speeches from federation members, as well as some dignitaries, Luis Fernando Suárez gave his list of players that will be wearing "La H" in Brazil.

The big surprise will be that of Rony Martínez, one of the 10-domestic based players called up by Colombian coach Luis Fernando Suárez. The Real Sociedad player was one of the leading goalscorers in the league this past season.

Another addition of note is that of Carlo Costly. He returns to the World Cup list after having missed out on the 2010 edition due to an Achilles tendon tear weeks before the tournament.

Unfortunately, Real Jaen player Jonathan Mejía was not selected for the squad. Many expected him to be on that list after his performance this past season with the Spanish side.

Honduras will now head to Ft. Lauderdale to begin their training camp and will end it with a friendly match against England on June 7th at Sun Life Stadium. After that they will head to Brazil, where they will debut against France at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre on June 15th. They will then take on Ecuador in Curitiba five days later and then finish off the group stage against Switzerland in Manaus on June 25th.

MLS Trio Get Honduras Callup

MLS trio, Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia, New England Revolution forward Jerry Bengtson, and Colorado Rapids winger Marvin Chavez have all been named to the Honduras national team’s 2014 FIFA World Cup preparatory camp by head coach Luis Fernando Suarez on Monday.

Boniek Garcia, 29, played in each of Honduras’ 16 qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, scoring one goal. The Tegucigalpa native has earned 92 caps, tied for the fifth-most in Honduras national team history. The midfielder has 11 goals and 14 assists in 59 career appearances with the Dynamo, including playoffs. García was the Dynamo Players’ Player of the Year in 2012.

Marvin Chavez has made 37 appearances for Honduras, including qualifying matches for the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2009 and 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cups, scoring four goals in total. His most recent appearance with Honduras was on November 19, when he started in the 2-2 draw with Ecuador. He was acquired by the Rapids in an offseason trade with the San Jose Earthquakes, and has played a total of 98 MLS matches (78 starts) since joining the league with Dallas in late 2009, scoring 12 goals and adding 20 assists.

“This is a great accomplishment for Marvin and is a result of his hard work and strong performances at the club and international level over the last several years,” said Paul Bravo, the Rapids VP of Soccer Operations. “We are thrilled for Marvin that he has this opportunity and wish him the best with Honduras, both in the next few weeks of camp and in the tournament in Brazil.”

Finallly, New England Revolution forward Jerry Bengtson – the leading goal-scorer in CONCACAF during World Cup qualifying – is one step closer to going to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup as he has been called up for Honduras’ three pre-World Cup friendlies and is on the country’s preliminary World Cup roster.

Bengtson has 41 caps for Honduras, and has scored 19 goals. He scored a goal in Honduras’ 2-1 win over Venezuela on March 5, his last appearance with the national team.

WC Consular Tips: Stay Away From Mosquitoes, Favelas and Stranger´s Drinks

Stick together; don´t accept drinks from strangers; don´t visit favelas -- and don´t forget the mosquito repellent.

That´s just some of the consular advice being offered to foreign football fans heading to the World Cup in Brazil next month.

The advice for fans from the United States, England, Germany and Argentina comes as Brazil races to be ready for the tournament against a backdrop of social unrest over the cost of the event, poor public services and crime.

Much of the worst violence is concentrated in slum districts known as favelas, where so-called police pacification units have been battling drug traffickers and crime gangs.

But tourist havens in Rio -- which will host seven matches, including the July 13 final -- also suffer regular assaults and robberies while authorities recently revealed a surge in murder rates.

Homicides in Rio state as a whole rose 23.6 percent in March compared with last year, and 10 percent in Rio city itself, the Rio Institute for Public Security said in figures released Saturday.

Friday saw a fatal shooting in the Rocinha slum easily visible from the luxury hotel where the England team will stay.

Robberies were up by around a third with tourist hotspot such as well-heeled Ipanema some of the worst afflicted.

Last month, a youth grabbed a woman´s gold necklace just as she was being interviewed -- about crime -- on live television.

State secretary for security affairs, Jose Mariano Beltrame, indicated Friday that 2,000 extra military police would be deployed in Rio during the World Cup.

"We are bringing forward a blueprint which will be put in place during the World Cup," said Beltrame, hoping their visible presence would "reduce the (statistical) indices."

Rio will have to manage an influx of around half a million World Cup fans -- domestic and foreign combined -- according to city hall estimates in a metropolis which last year suffered 30,489 street robberies and 12,381 vehicle thefts.

Rio daily O Dia lamented the apparent need to issue such advice as ´avoid carrying large amounts of money around,´ ´go out in groups,´ ´don´t accept drinks from strangers´ or ´don´t open your door until you are absolutely sure who is on the other side.´

Noting the consulates´ identification of myriad potential risks and threats, O Dia said: "In the case of Rio, the city appears as some kind of jungle where, at any moment, tourists will be subject to assault, kidnappers and rapists."

Noting a US warning that police assistance could be "limited", especially at night, the paper headlined an article Manual da Selva (jungle manual), dubbing the advice "gringo survival manuals."

And it quoted two British visitors in their early 20s as insisting that "people get assaulted every day in England as well."

The fan contingents from the United States, England, Argentina and Germany are expected to be among the largest with some 600,000 foreign fans expected in all.

The four countries agreed visits to slum areas or favelas were not advisable with even recently "pacified" ones still hosting unrest.

Germany´s consulate warned fans with a penchant for nightlife to "keep an eye on your drink in bars. And don´t go with a prostitute to a hotel of her choosing."

Fans of longtime World Cup foes England and Argentina are advised to look out for rather smaller creatures of the night.

"Use mosquito repellent; it can also help protect against mosquitoes that carry the dengue fever virus," England fans are urged, in advice echoed by Argentina´s consulate for their fans.

Costa Rica Primera Division: Alajuelense 0 Deportivo Saprissa 0

Alajuelense held on for a 0-0 draw against arch-rivals Deportivo Saprissa on Monday in the first leg of the Torneo de Verano final.

Saprissa dominated the shot count at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela but were unable to breach the home side´s defence, leaving the two-legged final evenly poised ahead of Saturday´s second leg.

Alajuelense and Saprissa entered the first leg level on 29 championships apiece in Costa Rica´s Primera Division, with this season´s summer tournament - or Torneo de Verano - set to give one of the traditional rivals their 30th league title.

In another edition of the Clasico del Futbol Costarricense, Saprissa took 18 shots, while the hosts only managed nine.

Daniel Colindres, Hansell Arauz and Carlos Saucedo had the best chances to score for the visitors, while Jonathan McDonald worked hard up front for Alajuelense.
