Xelaju and Herediano look to go distance

GUATEMALA CITY -- Two teams from the Central American region are through to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, making for an impressive sum, even if in some ways it wasn´t an overly prolific group phase for Central American clubs on the whole.

The defining images this year, though, will be the scenes of triumph surrounding successful bids to advance by Costa Rica´s Herediano and Guatemala´s Xelajú, each of which obtained tickets to the quarterfinals with scrappy efforts away from home on the final match day.

A sterling group phase saw Herediano endure Group 2 without a loss and turning in a solid all-around effort under difficult conditions in Utah, securing a scoreless tie with 2010/11 finalist Real Salt Lake.

Xelaju pulled off what was perhaps an even more unlikely feat by going to Estadio Omnilife in Mexico and scoring a priceless away goal late, ending the first round even with Guadalajara on points, but advancing on away goals scored in head-to-head matches between the pair.

The survival of Central America´s representatives came down to the wire. At the end of the day, having a pair of teams through to the quarterfinals makes for solid representation from the region. This is particularly significant given that the last edition of the CONCACAF Champions League saw only one Central American side advance to the knockout phase.

In 2011-12, El Salvador´s Isidro Metapan earned a quarterfinal berth, but then fell to Pumas, leaving Central America without a presence in the semifinals. If last season´s lone quarterfinal entrant marked a bit of a lull for the area, the high water mark under the current group format came in 2009, when Comunicaciones, Arabe Unido and Marathon all made the quarterfinals, only to be eliminated in that round. The previous year, Marathon advanced from the region.

Two years ago, two Central American teams also made the quarterfinals.Saprissa and Olimpia faced off in the first elimination round, assuring regional representation in the semifinals for what would be the most recent time to date.

In 2013, Xelajú and Herediano will both be looking to update that record by progressing to the semis. For the Costa Rican side, there is plenty of precedent for success in the CCL.Saprissa was in the semifinals as recently as that 2010/11 campaign, and also made the 2008 final of the then Champions Cup, nearly adding to a regional title won in 2005.

Where Xelajú is concerned, the Quetzaltenango side has already matched the point of reference for Guatemalan clubs -- Comunicaciones´ 2009/10 quarterfinal run.The Cremas´ quarterfinal appearance and subsequent loss to eventual champion Pachuca marks the furthest advancement for a Guatemalan club since the continental championships moved to the group stage format.

In attempting to improve upon those performances, neither Central American team will have it easy this time around. In the home-and-home playoff series to kick-off in early March, Herediano will face 2011 MLS champion LA Galaxy, while Xelajú is faced with an equally stiff task in being matched against two-time defending CCL champion Monterrey.

Opponents will underestimate the Central American teams at their own risk.As the remaining representatives of a region looking to continue a tradition of excellence in international play, both proud clubs can be expected to provide solid challenges to the region´s giants come 2013. Getting this far has proven that Central America´s CCL entrants are certainly up to the task.

Cuba, Jamaica win to open Carib U-20 finals

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Arichel Hernandez scored a pair of first-half goals to give Cuba a 2-1 victory over Suriname on Tuesday in the opening game for both in Caribbean Under-20 finals.

The result left Cuba just ahead of host Jamaica, which also won its opening game in Group B, 1-0 over Antigua & Barbuda.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico in February.

Hernandez gave Cuba the lead in the 24th and added a second a minute before halftime.

Miquel Darson scored within a minute of the second-half kickoff, his second of the Caribbean qualifying and only the second allowed by Cuba in four matches, but Suriname´s chances to equalize were damaged when Serginho Eduard received two yellow cards in 13 minutes and was ejected in the 75th.

In the second game, Oshana Boothe put Jamaica ahead three minutes before halftime and the "Young Boyz" prevailed over a 10-man Antigua.

Like Eduard, Antigua´s Jamoy Stevens was issued two yellow cards in the second half, getting the second and getting expelled in the 84th minute.

Jamaica will next face Suriname, with Cuba and Antigua to square off in the early game of Thursday´s doubleheader

Trinidad, Haiti win Carib U-20 openers

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti won their opening matches at the Caribbean U-20 finals Monday night, making an early claim for berths in next year´s CONCACAF championship.

Shackiel Henry gave Trinidad the lead in the 32nd and Shaquille Nesbit added the insurance in the first minute of second-half injury time to complete a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader at Kingston´s Waterhouse Stadium, Cheny Johnley and Ismael Voltaire rallied Haiti from an early deficit to beat Curacao 2-1. Reychelo Fecunda had given Curacao the lead in the 10th minute, but Johnley equalized three minutes later and Johnley scored the eventual winner in the 51st.

Haiti finished the match with 10 men after Johnley was ejected in the second minute of second-half injury time.

The results put Trinidad and Haiti atop Group A, with round-robin play to continue on Wednesday and Friday.

Group B was to begin play Tuesday with Cuba facing Suriname and Jamaica playing Antigua.

The top two teams from each group along with the best third-place team will advance to the CONCACAF U-20 Championship February 18-March 2 in Puebla, Mexico.

Who is new Chelsea signing Wallace?

On Wednesday morning, reports have emerged that Fluminense full-back Wallace has completed a €5.5 million transfer to Premier League giants Chelsea, to take place in June 2013. The Elastico offers a simple guide to the Blues’ latest Brazilian signing.

1. Wallace joined Fluminense aged 11 in 2005, having previously played at one of the club’s affiliated projects in Irajá, the area where he grew up. Since 2010, 40% of his economic rights have been owned by Chelsea, as part of the deal that returned Deco to Brazil.

2. The youngster spent a some of his youth career playing as an attacking midfielder, however he has always considered full-back to be his natural position. It is at right-back that he has made nearly all of his senior appearances, although occasionally deputising in the left full-back position.

3. In his early days at Fluminense, Wallace was often compared to the club’s former graduate Marcelo and was even given the same “Peixe” (fish) nickname. The club have a reputation for producing full-backs, with Manchester United’s Rafael and Fábio also having emerged from the Rio de Janeiro side’s academy in recent seasons.

4. The full-back is renowned for his pace and strength, as well as his attacking nature. Although he must still improve defensively, he has been playing well above his age level since he was 14 and made his senior debut aged just 17 in July 2011.

5. Wallace has represented Brazil at Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 level, participating alongside Chelsea forward Lucas Piazon at the Under-17 South American Championship and World Cup in 2011.

6. To date, the youngster has made 23 senior appearances for Fluminense and has one title to his name – the 2012 Carioca State Championship. However, within the next few weeks he is set to add the 2012 Brazilian Championship title whilst, with the Seleção, he was also a key part of the 2011 Under-17 South American championship success.

Arouca: Neymar staying encourages players to join Santos

Santos midfielder Arouca believes that high profile players are more likely to join the club, knowing that Neymar will remain at the Vila Belmiro until 2014.

Arouca, who himself is now a member of the main Brazil squad, is hopeful that after a poor 2013 campaign, the club can return themselves to title-winning ways next year.

To do so, the club will have to strengthen and the midfielder insists that Neymar´s presence can play a major role in the club´s recruitment plans.

"Having Neymar in the group is a great thing. Santos managed to keep him, with a contract until 2014, and that shows we plan to have a strong squad in 2013," he told reporters.

"We have the Brasileiro, the Paulista and we are also fighting for a place in the Copa Sudamericana, which is another way of entering the Libertadores in 2014. Because of this, many players want to come to Santos."

The likes of Renato Augusto, Nenê and Diego Souza are linked with a move to the club this coming transfer window and Arouca hopes that some big-name arrivals can return the club to the top of the Brazilian game.

"Signings are always welcome, even more so those quality names that are being discussed," he finished. "Santos has a great squad. If new players arrive, we will return to fighting for titles in 2013."

Vagner Love offered to Corinthians - report

Flamengo striker Vagner Love is reportedly seeking an exit route from the cash-striken Rio de Janeiro side, with the player´s representatives making contact with Corinthians over a possible transfer.

Vagner Love, 28, rejoined the Rubro-Negro in January 2012, but has seen the club lurch from crisis to crisis as the club´s turbulent financial and political situation becomes increasingly severe.

With September´s salary unpaid, the striker´s representatives reportedly shocked rivals Corinthians by making an approach to the club over negotiating a possible transfer.

Although the São Paulo side have denied entering any negotiations for the player, director of football Roberto de Andrade admits they would consider the striker:

"Everything can change," he told Lancenet. "We are not after Love, but who knows what will happen tomorrow. There is no reason why it couldn´t happen tomorrow.

"If you look at him as a player, he is a great player - any club would like to have him in their squad. However, it is not the case. We do not know if we will bring in a striker. There is no negotiation."

Despite the reports, Love´s agent Evandro Ferreira has also denied that he had personally approached Corinthians over a deal.

Flamengo´s financial woe continues

Flamengo staff are set to receive their salaries for October by Wednesday night, ahead of the club´s self-imposed Thursday deadline, but there is still little progress regarding September´s unpaid wages.

With the club currently strapped for cash, the Rubro-Negro attempted to take a loan of R$3 million (£1 million) to ease the situation, but saw their request rejected.

In recent times, the club have already taken-out two loans totalling approximately R$15 million (£5 million) with Banco BMG, but have seen financial concerns ease little.

The issue is becoming a delicate subject for president Patricia Amorim, who is seeking re-election later this year and has found herself under heavy attack from opposition candidates for her handling of the club.

The club´s latest attempts to secure much-needed funding will come via the courts, as they challenge a block on a R$20 million payment (£6.5 million) regarding television rights.

The payment, which would temporarily ease the club´s financial worries, has been withheld on account of tax liabilities owed since the time of previous management at the club.

Hvorfor Mexico hjemme i den sidste kamp :( Sidste gang var det gringoerne. Det var dog på udebane dengang og mon ikke Mexico allerede er kvalificeret til den tid. Men stadigvæk....

Nye i truppen er Jairo Arrieta, der har gjort det godt indtil videre i USA og Jonathan McDonald der også har spillet en fornuftig sæson hos Kalmar FF i Sverige.
