Slap af gruppe A bliver en hård omgang.
Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Corinthians eyeing triple swoop but face difficulties

Corinthians are continuing discussions with agent Carlos Leite over the possible transfer of three of his clients to the club for next season, according to a report in Lancenet.

The report, which follows suggestions that have been circulating for some time, indicates that the reigning Copa Libertadores champions are looking to rejuvenate their squad with the signings of Leverkusen midfielder Renato Augusto and defenders Gil and Anderson Martins, from Valenciennes and Al Jaish respectively.

Renato Augusto, thought to be available for €4 million, has long been a target, but Corinthians will face competition from former club Flamengo for his signature, with the deal the most unlikely of the trio.

The club will also face difficulty in their pursuit of defender Gil, 24, who has been a stand-out player for Valenciennes in recent times. Although thought to have been available in the summer, his form over the last few months has led to an increase in asking price for the former Cruzeiro player. Anderson Martins, 25, meanwhile, has been given permission to return to Brazil by his Qatari side.

The planned reinforcements of the defence come as Corinthians look to reduce the average age of their centre-backs, with both Chicão and Anderson Polga over-30, while Paulo Andre is 29 years old.

Corinthians striker Emerson Sheik says "Why not?" to the possibility of a Seleção call-up

Corinthians striker Emerson Sheik believes it is not impossible that new Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari could pick him of the national team, given that he tried to sign the player when coach of Palmeiras before he moved to the Timão in 2011.

Sheik, 33, who was the hero of Corinthians Copa Libertadores victory this year, would have made the move to Palmeiras had Fluminense, his club at the time, not demanded such a high transfer fee and the striker believes the former Portugal coach was the right man to replace Mano Menezes.

He told Globo Esporte: "I was happy by choice though. He´s a winning coach, that why he is there with (Carlos Alberto) Parreira (technical coordinator Selection). As a Brazilian, I was happy.

"I am motivated by his statements, and why not dream about a recall? I naturalised in Qatar, but was prevented from playing by Fifa, because I had already played for Brazil at Under-20 level.

"I can only play for the Brazilian national team. Being picked or not, it is a motivation to come back strong next year, seeking titles."

And the striker was also keen to state that he is happy at Corinthians, despite offers to go back to the Middle East.

"I have befriended the sheik of Qatar. A guy who likes me and sometimes tried to get me out of Brazil. But I´m right here, happy.

"I do not depend on money. There I would receive more, but money does not bring happiness. I can not see far from Corinthians or my children. I live 45 minutes away from them, and I can not go a week without visiting them.

"But they (Arab leaders) are always very strong. I want to stay."

Brazil president: Seleção must honour footballing tradition at Confederations Cup

Brazil president Dilma Rousseff has called upon the country´s football team to uphold the country´s footballing traditions at the upcoming Confederations Cup.

Dilma, who was present at the draw for the event on Saturday morning, believes that it is the country´s responsibility to both compete for the title and to impress with their style of play.

"We are all aware that we have a dual responsibility in this tournament," the president told reporters. "The first is to present a type of football that honours our tradition."

Ms Rousseff then went on to assure reporters that Brazil would hold the "most happy and organised World Cup of all time".

"We are a democratic country with a strong economy, who chased and won the inclusion of millions of Brazilians. There is no prejudice here or culture of exclusion."

The Confederations Cup will take place from 15-30 June this summer, in what will be Brazil´s final competitive action ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Deco backs Brazil´s appointment of Luiz Felipe Scolari

Fluminense midfielder Deco has hailed Brazil’s appointment of his former Chelsea and Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as national team coach.

The 64-year-old was named as Mano Menezes´ successor for the Seleção hotseat on Thursday for the second time in his career, having guided Brazil to victory in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Deco is adamant his two-time mentor is the ideal choice for the role and will bring the good times back to the south American nation.

He said: "Beside being a good friend, I admire Felipao for all he represents in Brazilian football and has done to help my career.

"We worked together for many years, so he is a guy that I will always appreciate greatly.

"I believe the idea is bring the Seleção back to the supporters, and he is the guy that knows how to. He has plenty of charisma, star quality and everything to bring the good times back to Brazil."

The Portuguese international, who was part of Flu’s Brasileirão winning side this season, revealed he is beginning to contemplate the thought of hanging up his boots.

Deco added: "If I say that I´m going stop at the end of next year, it´s a risk," he added. "But I want to finish on a high. I am 35 years old, so there´s not long left.

"I have other plans and other interests, but I can keep that for later. It all depends how next year will pan out and how my body feels so it´s very hard to predict [when exactly I will stop playing]."

Internacional to announce Dunga as coach on Monday - Report

Former Brazil national team coach Dunga will be announced as the new coach of Internacional on Monday, according to Globo Esporte on Saturday.

Dunga, 49, has been out of work since stading down as Seleção coach in 2010 after a poor showing at the World Cup in South Africa, when Brazil were knocked out at the quarter final stage by the Netherlands.

The report on the Globo Esporte website said that an agreement was close and quoted someone involved in the deal, who said:

"Maybe yes. It will depend on the approval of the last condition of the contract. It will be formalised in the morning tomorrow (Saturday), when everything, in principle, should be completed on paper."

Dunga himself, on Thursday, admitted he was close to signing a deal with Inter and hinted that it was a case of when, not if.

He said: "There is the question of time. The sooner, the better."

The former Brazil midfielder, who lifted the World Cup in the USA as captain in 1994, is well respected in Porto Alegre as he started and ended his career as a player with Inter.
