Botafogo coach Oswaldo de Oliveira surprised by the performances of Clarence Seedorf

Botafogo coach Oswaldo de Oliveira has admitted that he was ‘stunned’ at the performances and influence of former AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf since arriving at the club earlier this year.

Seedorf, 36, was signed originally as a marketing ploy by the club but has proved to be an inspired signing.

“It was a marketing idea and his numbers were not encouraging for Milan,” Oliveira told SporTV.

“He did not play many matches and, while playing, missed passes and was not as effective. His arrival was a concern, but what did we get….A rejuvenated Seedorf, he is motivated.

“Off the field, Seedorf is impressive. He talks to everybody, with the coaching staff, players, management. He promotes dinners with players, encourages the young ones. What Seedorf does is very important.”

The coach also explained his decision to play the Dutch international higher up the field that he has normally played throughout his career.

“In the first game, I put Elkeson closer, closer to the attack. I was criticised because he has played a lifetime in midfield. But should I put it where he will run more, for 90 minutes? He is 36 years old. Why he did so many goals? Because he is closer to the area.”

Despite his outstanding performances this season, Oliveira does have concerns over the player’s fitness and will need to manage the star over the course of the season.

“I´ll wait a little longer to decide with the coaching staff. Let´s see the evolution of it. Seedorf did a pre-season in 2012.

“Seedorf has wear but is adapted to Brazil. He is very strong, but he is a player much closer to the end of his career than the beginning.”

Racing: Porto quiere a Centurión

UNCAF U-17

Honduras U17s qualify for CONCACAF finals

SAN MIGUEL PETAPA, Guatemala -- Honduras qualified for the finals of next year´s CONCACAF Under-17 Championship with its third win on the trot, while Costa Rica got off the mark against El Salvador on Tuesday at the UNCAF U-17 Championship.

In the early match of a doubleheader played at the Estadio Julio Armando Cobar, Nicaragua had a pair of early opportunities through target man Yader Bonilla. Honduran goalkeeper Cristian Hernandez, though, proved up to the challenges, daringly coming out to the penalty spot on one notable occasion midway through the first half, to make a save after a defensive miscue.

Honduras had its clearest chance of the first period in the 44th minute through Steven Ramos, but the diminutive attacker lifted his shot over the bar after cutting back neatly in the Nicaraguan area.

Just six minutes into the second half, however, Honduras finally got the break through it was looking for. Alberth Elis Martinez raided the area and attempted a cross that struck the arm of Nicaraguan defender Santiago Cruz. Devron Garcia stepped up to dispatch his second penalty kick of the tournament for the 1-0 lead.

A quarter of an hour later, Ramos gave the Hondurans a bit of tranquility, putting his team up by two by tapping in an Elis Martinez feed from close range.

The Honduran offense began to roll, and, in the 75th minute, second-half substitute Jorge Bodden fired the Catrachos into a 3-0 lead, finishing past Nicaraguan goalkeeper Luis Montealto with a well-placed shot from just inside the box.

Garcia then closed the scoring with two minutes left in regulation, controlling a corner kick and firing past a stranded Montealto for his second of the day to polish off the 4-0 score line and confirm the Catrachos´ place in next year´s regional championship.

"We´re pleased, since it looked like we might not qualify today," said Honduran coach Jose Francisco Valladares. "The first half was very even, but we improved a lot in the second half. Now we have to close out playing well, as always."

The second match up of the day pitted two teams fighting to get on track, El Salvador and Costa Rica.

After a back-and-forth, scoreless first half, it was the Salvadorans who took the lead 16 minutes after the interval. Midfielder Oscar Acevedo spotted Costa Rican goalkeeper Jorge Jara off his line, and teed up a long-range blast from about 40 meters that ended up in the net.

Costa Rica fought back furiously, tying the game in the 84th minute. Rory Rivera was taken down in the box and put away the ensuing penalty to even the match.

With just four minutes left, Costa Rican Berny Burke decided the match with a drive from outside the area into the top corner of the Salvadoran net.

The 2-1 loss eliminated the hard-working Cuscatlecos from the competition with one game remaining.

"We worked the whole match, but two small lapses cost us," said Acevedo. "I think we were the better team today, but we didn´t come out on top. We just have to keep working. This is not the end for us."

On Match Day 4, scheduled for Thursday, Costa Rica can qualify with a win over Nicaragua in the early match, while current tournament leader Honduras and Guatemala face-off in the late game.

Trinidad & Tobago og Haiti er klar til Gold Cup.

Caribbean Cup 2012

Antigua & Barbuda - Haiti 0-1

Trinidad & Tobago - Don Domikanske Republik 2-1

Haiti beats Antigua; qualifies for Gold Cup

ST. JOHN´S, Antigua - A costly 1-0 defeat at the hands of Haiti on Tuesday sent host Antigua and Barbuda crashing out of the 2012 Caribbean Cup finals. It was the second disappointment recently for the tournament host, which only a few short months ago missed out on a place in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014.

The result means that Haiti wins Group A with seven points, three ahead of runner-up Trinidad & Tobago. Both sides earned berths at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, plus advanced to the Caribbean semifinals.

The Haitians started the game in a more aggressive posture, even though it needed only a draw to progress. They seemed to relish playing in front of their opponent´s home supporters and stuck to a well-conceived game plan.

Antigua had precious few true scoring chances, as dangerous forward Peter Byers - who scored 10 goals in 12 World Cup qualifiers - received little service.

The game for all intents and purposes ended in the 19th minute, when an ambitious attempt off the foot of Haiti´s Leonel St. Preux was partially saved by goalkeeper Molvin James. The ball landed in front of Jean-Philippe Peguero and he made no mistake to put the 2007 Caribbean champion ahead with his second goal of the finals.

Antigua tried its best to find the equalizer before the half, but the combination of Byers, Gason Gregory and Quinton Griffith could not get the open look that they needed.

The Trinidadian players, who beat the Dominican Republic 2-1 in the evening´s opener, stayed to watch the game, knowing that their tournament existence was at stake. A draw would have eliminated the Soca Warriors, since they would have then been even on four points with Antigua, but would have been eliminated due to a Sunday loss to the Benna Boys.

The second half saw Haiti remain on the attack and they even had two goals called back for offside.

Antigua were kept on their heels and had difficulty breaking down the Haitian duo of Meschack Jerome and Jean Monuma Constant, both of whom executed tackles in expert fashion.

Haiti, which will be making its fifth Gold Cup appearance, is scheduled to face the Group B runner-up Friday in the semifinals. Trinidad & Tobago has not played in a Gold Cup since 2007 and will meet the Group B winner in the knockout round.

Trinidad squeezes past Dominican Republic

ST. JOHN´S, ANTIGUA -- Trinidad & Tobago staved off elimination and did what was necessary to stay alive in the finals of Caribbean Cup, defeating the Dominican Republic 2-1 on Tuesday at the Antigua Recreation Ground. The result moved the Soca Warriors into a temporary share of first-place tie on four points in Group A with Haiti, which will face host Antigua and Barbuda later in the evening.

A Haitian win will eliminate Antigua and ensure that Trinidad qualifies for its first CONCACAF Gold Cup since 2007, as well as advance to the Caribbean semifinals.

Trinidad took a 14th minute lead, when Kevon Carter´s shot was initially saved by Dominican goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd. The ball, though, took an awkward bounce and rolled into the net.

It was the third straight game that the Dominican Republic fell behind first, a distressing problem that would haunt it on this occasion, especially with so much at stake.

Knowing that it needed at least a draw to have any hope of progressing, the Dominicans went on the offensive. The more urgent play almost paid dividends in the 36th minute, but a goal by Kerbi Rodriguez was disallowed for offside.

A minute later, a shot from point-blank range by the prolific Jonathan Faña Farias was well saved by Trinidadian goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams.

The equalizer would finally come seven minutes after the break. Faña Farias somehow managed to square the ball back into play from an acute angle at the end line to Rodriguez, who hit it past Williams. It was Rodriguez´s second goal of the finals.

That moment of hope was short lived. Lloyd saved a thunderbolt of a shot from Curtis Gonzales, but he could not hold on and the rebound was spilled towards substitute Kevin Molino. The 22-year-old took advantage of the 71st minute error to hammer the ball into the back of the net for the game winner.

After being shutout for 194 minutes in the tournament, Trinidad managed to put two goals past the Dominican Republic, which was officially eliminated.

Honduras U17s led by Elis and Velasquez

SAN MIGUEL PETAPA, Guatemala -- After two rounds of the 2012 UNCAF Under-17 Championship, Honduras has established itself as a clear favorite to win the title.

The Catrachos are the only team to have maintained a perfect record, opening with two straight wins. Apart from that pair of triumphs, the Hondurans have demonstrated a dominance and ease in victory, which suggests that this team is capable of much more, not only at the regional level, but potentially worldwide. Before that, however, the team needs to qualify for and do well at that 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Panama.

Key to Honduran success has been a constant threat in attack. The Catrachos have scored eight goals in two games, led by Alberth Elis Martinez with four, and Brayan Velasquez, who has scored two.

Velasquez, who tends to play out wide, has provided a number of assists for Elis, who sticks to the middle of the attack as a speedy target man. The duo´s blossoming partnership is surely due in large part to the fact that the players are not only national teamers, but also teammates at the club level with Olimpia, the winningest team in Honduran club football.

"That´s my job, to get the ball and get it to him, so he can score," said Velasquez, who struck twice himself in Honduras´ opener against El Salvador, before providing assists on two of Elis´s three goals in the following match, a win against Costa Rica on Sunday.

"He and I, we play on the same team in Honduras, and we know how to play together," added Velasquez.

In Honduras, the pair of attackers has learned each other´s tendencies to perfection in the youth ranks of Olimpia, which signed the promising young starlets at the beginning of 2012. That decision has paid huge dividends for both club and country.

"There, they call us the ´matadors,´ because both of us score," said Velasquez. "But thanks to God we´ve also been able to score here."

In fact, with six goals between them, the Honduran dynamic duo has to date outscored all the other teams present at the tournament. The combination of Elis´s speed and power, plus Velasquez´s skill on the ball and field vision, has been deadly for Honduras´ opponents.

"That´s simply the way we play," said Elis. "It´s a result of a lot of hard work."

After providing a pair of memorable outings against its first two rivals, Honduras now is in the driver´s seat to lift the UNCAF trophy, but also seems a likely candidate to obtain one of the CONCACAF region´s four berths for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

However, the coaching staff as well as the "dynamic duo" recognize that the work is far from over, both here in Guatemala as well as on the road to next year´s confederation tournament. Honduras can secure a place in Panama with a third consecutive victory, when it returns to the synthetic pitch at Estadio Julio Armando Cobar on Tuesday.

"Being a favorite is demonstrated on the field," said Elis. "We still have two games left, but God willing we´ll go far. The goal is to qualify to the World Cup, and here, to qualify in first place."

In the opening match on Tuesday, Honduras faces the Nicaraguan U-17s, who tied their in first outing against host Guatemala. The Catrachos close out their participation in the UNCAF U-17 Championship on Thursday afternoon with a meeting against Guatemala.

Ortega llevaría a D´Alessandro a River

Me encanta.

"Me encanta. Juega bien, es rápido y hace goles. Le falta confianza. Jugaba un partido y cinco no. Como enganche necesita continuidad y el apoyo del técnico", evaluó.
