Paraguay 5 runde

Apertura 2013 Week 5 Wrap: Late winners for the new boys as big guns fail

A funny week in which the major clubs didn’t manage a goal between them, in fact Cerro, Olimpia and Guaraní all lost while Libertad managed a goalless draw. The headlines are for the smaller teams, General Díaz continue this incredible winning run and become the first newly-promoted side since Atletico Tembetary in 1996 to win five games in a row. Deportivo Capiatá also recorded a famous win with a stoppage time freekick against Cerro Porteño to lift themselves off the bottom and temporarily out of the relegation zone.

We start with Fidel Miño’s wonderful freekick on Sunday evening, watch the video until the end to see the angle behind the goal. Cerro Porteño had looked the most likely to break the deadlock in a team packed with young stars with Junior Alonso and Miguel Almirón both making their senior debuts, but they were denied by Tobias Vargas and their own wasteful finishing.

Going back chronologically and on Saturday night Olimpia were blown away in the first 20-odd minutes by a Nacional side who look like they will be title challengers once again. A super-strike from Silvio Torales opened the scoring but was he given too much space by Jorge Baez, who was again unable to defend a cross at the back post which allowed Gustavo Cristaldo to head in after 15 minutes. Baez isn’t a bad player but he isn’t suited to the kind of defensive work Ever Almeida is trying to get him to do and it showed. Julian Benítez made it three after 23 minutes and that was game over with Olimpia not capable of pulling back that many goals even in an improved second half display.

On Friday night, General Díaz continue to surprise and make me look silly – although it is impossible to begrudge them another victory built on a fine defensive display, excellent team spirit and a few mindblowing saves. Jorge Cáceres got the winner in the dying stages, a header from a corner that keeps them top of the league.

In other news, Libertad rested players and drew nil-nil in Carapeguá while there was also a draw for Sol de América who finally scored again through Sergio Escalante, a late equaliser after Cerro de Franco had gone ahead. Another team that ended their four-game goal drought was Sportivo Luqueño, it took Claudio Correa just five minutes to head in and that proved to be the winner against his former club Rubio Ñu who are now in the relegation zone.

Breaking down Alejandro SABELLA´s list

Argentina was faced with two very difficult World Cup qualifying matches in the last round. At home to Uruguay and away to Chile. And they walked away with maximum points. The match against Uruguay was, in my opinion, Argentina´s best match since 2007. They completely dominated them and deserved those points. Against Chile, they were under attack and while the back line was bending, it didn´t break. Many will be wondering why Willy CABALLERO is not included in the squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches and rightfuly so. CABALLERO has been excellent this season and deserves a spot on the bench. Sergio ROMERO didn´t have the best of matches against Sweden. For some reason, he doesn´t do too well in friendly matches but does very well in World Cup Qualifiers. The amount of times he has saved us lately has been ridiculous. He saved a penalty kick against Peru, threw himself onto the ball against Uruguay where he was almost injured and was the reason why Argentina had any chance against Chile. The ball will be flying in La Paz when the team faces Bolivia and every country that goes to play there struggles. Even the best goalkeepers could be made to look like fools while playing there.

The defenders is what we´ve been used to for a while now. The inclusion of Jose BASANTA can be helpful. I´ve never seen him play and cannot judge him. However, playing in the Mexican league and the Concacaf Champions League means he has played at altitude level on a pretty consistent basis and is used to playing in those types of environments. That could open the opportunity for him to start the match against Bolivia in La Paz. Again, I´ve never seen him play and for all I know he could be terrible, but I think if he does play in a match, it would be the one against Bolivia.

Pablo ZABALETA, Hugo CAMPAGNARO, Federico FERNANDEZ and Ezequiel GARAY have become the regular starters for Argentina in the back line. Marcos ROJO doesn´t seem to be a fan favorite and while I have nothing against him, he´s going to need to watch himself. If he starts, Venezuela will no doubt park the bus and try to counter-attack. Having anyone running towards ROJO on a counter attack will usually end with the result of Marcos getting skinned alive. I don´t like his chances any better playing against speedy Bolivians who could probably outrun Usain BOLT at altitude level. With that said, ROJO was having a good game against Uruguay before being substituted off due to an injury. If he can improve on that performance, I´m all for him starting against Venezuela. If not, SABELLA can start with ZABALETA and CAMPAGNARO as fullbacks.

The midfield isn´t the most technical. Javier MASCHERANO will be missing his partner in crime, Fernando GAGO as he is out injured. I have little to no doubt in my mind that GUINAZU starts the match against Bolivia as a player of his style could be very useful to have in that match. I can see Ever BANEGA starting the Venezuela match. The problem with him is it depends which BANEGA shows up. If it´s the one that can dominate a midfield, he´ll be able to help Argentina dictate the match. If it´s the party loving Ever BANEGA, he´ll be able to help Venezuela dictate their counter attacks. Angel DI MARIA is out, both injured and suspended for the first match, therefore that opens a spot in midfield. Does the third spot go to Walter MONTILLO as was the case when the team played against Sweden? Does it go to Jose SOSA or even Augusto FERNANDEZ? That is a reason why I would like to see Erik LAMELA called-up for this round, but I´ll get to that in a minute.

The forwards, HIGUAIN, PALACIO, LAVEZZI, MESSI, AGUERO and DI SANTO. Rodrigo PALACIO has been in excellent form for Inter and I have no problem with him being in the squad. He´s versatile, has experience and is scoring goals. Ezequiel LAVEZZI´s form has picked-up with PSG and has more often then not been a regular on the team under SABELLA. Franco DI SANTO is another story. He seems like a good kid and always positive (if you follow him on Twitter, you´ll know what I mean), but I´d have preferred that SABELLA goes with someone like Hernan BARCOS. With the little minutes he has shown with the senior National Team, he has played well and looks more of a dangerous threat going forward as opposed to DI SANTO.

Erik LAMELA and Mauro ICARDI are the two players who everyone is wanting in the team. I said that DI MARIA is out and I would like to see Erik LAMELA called-up. I meant it. LAMELA is in great form and played for River Plate. The kid is used to playing under pressure. Even if SABELLA doesn´t want to start him, having him in the squad would only be a good thing. Mauro ICARDI is a great talent as well and has been great this season for Sampdoria. A real predator in the box and if the team has a difficult time breaking down the Venezuelan team, he would be a great addition. He´s great in the air and would be helpful off corners, free kicks or crosses. The thing that many might argue is that these two matches for Argentina are very difficult matches. Venezuela is no longer a push-over and we haven´t won against Bolivia in our last three matches. And two of those matches were played in Argentina. My answer to that is Argentina´s matches after these two are in June. At home to in-form Colombia and away at Ecuador. Two equally difficult matches. Does that mean LAMELA and ICARDI shouldn´t be called-up to those matches as well? Because Argentina´s next match after that will be in August away to Russia in a friendly match. Should that be when they finally make the team? Including them in the team (I´m not saying start them, but give them National Team practice and training) will not hurt them. But SABELLA has been getting it right and he has given me no real reason to doubt him. If he believes now isn´t the time to call them-up, I´ll have to accept it. He obviously knows more than me on the matter.

I don´t think it´s a bad list, not at all. It´s what we´ve come to expect under SABELLA and it´s working. The match against Venezuela will be difficult because they will be playing for the counter attack and we will see how the team reacts to a very defensive team. Against Bolivia, it´s going to be a brawl. I´m expecting the same type of match as we saw against Peru but at altitude. Six points will be nearly impossible. Three or four points and depending how they play against Bolivia and I´m happy.

Peru Midfielder Guarderas Stars At South American U20 Championship

The South American U20 Championship often acts a springboard from which successful careers are launched and in this year’s edition few players enhanced their reputation more than Peru’s holding midfielder Rafael Guarderas.

Peru reached the final group stage of the competition for the first time since 1999 and were a whisker away from qualifying for their first ever U20 World Cup. Coached by the Argentinian Daniel Ahmed (who worked with Marcelo Bielsa during Bielsa’s time in charge of the Argentinian national team), they played positive, attacking football, with overlapping full-backs, lightning-quick strikers and a phalanx of tricky attacking midfielders.

But while full-backs Diego Chávez and Edwin Gómez, strikers Jean Deza and Yordy Reyna and attacking midfielders Edison Flores and Cristian Benavente impressed, Guarderas was, in his own quiet manner, perhaps Peru’s most accomplished performer.

In a dyadic defensive midfield alongside the more rugged Wilder Cartagena, Guarderas was a picture of assured excellence. Of lithe build, he relies on his excellent reading of the game and astute positional sense to spot danger and eradicate it swiftly and efficiently. Ahmed described him as the most tactically aware player in the squad.

In possession, Guarderas is neat and tidy, displaying good touch and awareness and looking to release within one or two touches. He proved proficient at linking a limited defence to the more technically adept forward players, combining particularly well with Flores and Benavente.

Despite his understated role, Guarderas caught the eye of watching scouts, with his club, Universitario, receiving five enquiries from foreign clubs, one of which is thought to have been from a high-profile German side. Universitario are, however, keen to keep hold of him and have confirmed that he will not be sold unless they receive a financially significant offer.

Guarderas has only made one appearance in the Universitario first team to date and even that came in strange circumstances. He was one of eleven reserve and youth team players selected for a 1-0 defeat to Inti Gas on the first day of the 2012 season, at a time when the club’s senior players and those of all Primera División clubs were striking in solidarity with others who had not received their salaries.

His path to the first team had been blocked by the tall, elegant midfielder Alvaro Ampuero, another product of the club’s youth academy and a near ever-present in 2012. Ampuero has now moved on to Europe with the Italian side Parma, clearing the way for Guarderas to make a first team spot his own.

Universitario are mired in financial crisis, but with a fruitful youth system that has in recent years also produced the likes of Andy Polo, Edison Flores and Raul Ruidiaz, appear confident of challenging at the top of the table in 2013. If they are to do so then Guarderas will surely have a big role to play.

Full Name: Rafael Nicanor Guarderas Saravia
Date of Birth: 23rd September 1993 (19 years old)
Place of Birth: Lima, Peru

Nogen der husker ham her...ganske talentfuld....

THE WILD CHILD OF PERUVIAN FOOTBALL

Comparisons with Balotelli?

While his would-be international team mates were impressing in their run to the semi-finals of the Copa America, Reimond Manco was also making the final four, albeit in a slightly less prestigious competition. You see, while Peru were doggedly making their way past Colombia, Manco was dancing his way into the semi-finals of ‘Amigos y Rivales’, Peru’s answer to ‘Dancing With The Stars’.

It was a fitting end to a tumultuous four years for the young Manco, who burst onto the scene as a 17-year old in 2007 and has rarely been out of the newspapers since. When El Comercio asked him in an interview earlier this year whether we would next see him in the news or the sports section of the paper, it summed up everything that has gone wrong with what originally seemed such a promising career.

Manco first caught the public’s attention as a key component of the Peru U-17 team that finished fourth at the 2007 South American U-17 Championship, named player of the tournament by CONMEBOL. He led the side into the U-17 World Cup, assisting two of their group stage goals, before scoring in the quarter final penalties victory over Tajikistan. Closely marked, he struggled to make an impact in Peru’s 2-0 defeat to Ghana in the semi-finals, but had nevertheless impressed sufficiently to be coveted by a number of top European clubs.

An irregular starter with Alianza Lima, making most of his impact off the bench, he made the move to Europe with PSV Eindhoven in 2008, following the route taken by Jefferson Farfan four years earlier. He provided an assist on his debut, but struggled to establish himself, either at PSV or in an injury-ravaged loan spell at Willem II. There were rumours of indiscipline and a poor attitude in training, and he was shipped back to Peru, on loan to Juan Aurich, in early 2010.

Juan Aurich were competing in the Copa Libertadores - South America’s Champions League - for only the second time in their history and were hopeful that Manco could help them make a significant impact in the competition. Two good performances in their qualifying tie against Estudiantes Tecos of Mexico showed initial promise. But other than a man of the match award in a 4-2 victory over fellow Peruvians Alianza Lima, Manco only displayed the merest glimpses of his talent as Juan Aurich were eliminated in the group stage.

PSV elected to cut their losses in the summer of 2010, terminating Manco’s five year contract three years early, and thus he joined Juan Aurich on a permanent basis. The stability that had previously been lacking in his career finally appeared to have arrived, and he was rewarded for his improved performances with a call up to the Peruvian national team for three September friendlies.

Manco came off the bench to assist a Juan Carlos Fernandez goal against Canada and then started the subsequent matches against Jamaica and Costa Rica. He did enough to earn himself a place in the squad for an away friendly with Panama in October, but just as it seemed he was getting his career back on track he was involved in what the Peruvian press rather hyperbolically referred to as the ‘Panama Scandal’.

Reports emerged that three Peruvian players had skipped curfew the night after the match and had been seen in a local casino in the early hours in the company of women. Speculation was rife as to who the perpetrators could be. Manco, upon being asked if he was involved, indicated that he had enjoyed a good night’s sleep. Subsequent witness reports and other evidence said otherwise, and Manco was eventually forced to admit his involvement.

Peru coach Sergio Markarian initially responded by saying that all those involved would never play for the national team again, although he later reneged on this statement, indicating that the door was open for the offenders to return the national set up. It is telling, however, that of the three players implicated, only Jefferson Farfan returned to the squad.

Manco moved to Mexico with Atlante in January of 2011, a move that was destined to end in the disaster from the minute he signed the contract. Atlante are based in Cancun; Manco is a notorious party animal. In the circumstances it’s surprising their relationship even lasted the two months and seven games it did, although no-one could have predicted the bizarre circumstances in which their union was severed.

On the 10th March 2011, Manco turned up late for training with his breath smelling strongly of alcohol. Far from admitting his culpability, Manco claimed that he and his cousin had been kidnapped and beaten by a taxi driver the previous night. Police, upon taking statements from Manco and his cousin, noticed a number of disparities in their respective accounts. When the Police reclaimed security camera footage from the area where the alleged incident took place there was no sign of either of the supposed victims. Manco and his cousin were reprimanded for providing false statements and fined for wasting police time. Atlante dismissed him.

Manco therefore found himself with time on his hands. With a contract dispute with his estranged Mexican owners ongoing, he decided it wise not to train with another professional club, at least until the off-season. And so began his flirtation with reality television that ended with a defeat in the semi-final when his ‘toadas’ was considered inferior to that of ex-footballer Julinho.

In early August he began to train with Juan Aurich, who are hopeful they can come to an agreement with Atlante to allow Manco to turn out for them in the near future. Even at the age of just 20, this will surely be the last chance Manco has to redeem a career that has thus far delivered far more entertainment off the pitch than it has on it.

Udinese set to finalise deal for Botafogo starlet Jadson - reports

Udinese are set to finalise a deal for Botafogo starlet Jadson on Tuesday, according to reports in Italy.

The 19-year-old will reportedly be in Italy to finalise the final details of the move before joining the Friulani in the summer.

Jadson has previously stated that he would reject a move to Udinese, despite the Fogão wanting to accept the €2.5 million offer for his services.

He told Lancenet: "I am not close to leaving Botafogo at the moment. I only want to leave here winning titles. Now is not the time to leave."

The youngster has already made more than 40 appearances for the Alvinegro despite only being promoted to the first-team in 2012.

Jadson was also a member of the Brazil Under-20 squad which participated in the South American Championship this January.
