Emiliano Papa: "Ganar a nivel local"

AFA to vote on banning away support after increased violence

The AFA Executive committee are due to meet tonight to discuss the proposed ban of all visiting supporters in a bid to control the football violence that has dominated the headlines in the opening 5 weeks of this season. It is understood that there is disagreement among members of the AFA and the leading figures within the Primera division clubs so this may not materialise but the recent incidents have caused alarm within the AFA and also the government. Football violence has long been a problem in Argentina and while the AFA and the clubs have done very little to try and curtail this, what is the thinking behind this most recent proposal?

This weekend’s fixtures once again showed the dark side to the Argentinian game as most the news channels were littered with images and videos of football violence. Colon hooligans attacked a bus on the motorway carrying some River Plate fans, the Boca power struggle in their hooligan organisation La Doce continued to rumble on with cars being burnt out and rioting and shooting involving Quilmes hooligans seem to have been the final straw as far as this year’s events are concerned. In the opening few weeks of this season there have been several incidents and now the governing bodies are looking for some solutions. The course of action in all metropolitan divisions is to stop all visiting supporters but the AFA are now wondering if they could apply this to the Primera Division. Understandably there is some concern from fans and the clubs that this will damage the game and not actually get to the root of the problem.

There are too many incidents to detail all of them but several members of the AFA are keen to implement this drastic move and it is believed that Julio Grondona is in agreement, but it remains to be seen whether they will push through such a hugely unpopular rule especially when Buenos Aires‚Äô ‚Äėbig 5′ are some of the clubs opposed to it.

Matias Lammens, San Lorenzo President, said that ‚Äúdriving the people from the stands is not the solution and they need to get to the root of the problem‚ÄĚ and this was echoed by several of his counterparts who argued that much of the violence is actual internal within the clubs and not with visiting supporters. This is true to some extent, as we have already witnessed a death when rival factions of Tigre‚Äôs barra bravas clashed and the long running soap opera of Boca‚Äôs barra power struggle continues between ex-boss, Rafa de Zeo and current head, Mauro Martin but it doesn‚Äôt cover all the violence and it certainly doesn‚Äôt get to the ‚Äúroot‚ÄĚ of the problem.

This so called ‚Äúroot‚ÄĚ perhaps understates this issue as football violence is now so engrained it is perhaps more akin to an iceberg. These incidents are just the tip that is visible to all but the real problem is lying out of sight as the AFA and the clubs protect and fund these hooligan organisations. The club Presidents require the support of the barra bravas to gain power and remain in their positions and in return supply them with tickets and merchandise so that they can be run like businesses and ensure that they have their continued support. The AFA all too often make noises without actually taking any action and it will be interesting to see if this recent discussion will simply be another case in point.

No one is in agreement on this but one thing is certain banning visiting supporters would remove something that is so special to Argentinian football ‚Äď the unparalleled atmosphere within stadiums around the country. Jose Mansur, President of Godoy Cruz said that by banning away fans ‚Äúyou banish the colour and folklore of football.‚ÄĚ

Ramon Diaz: To River and back

Sunday night’s game in the Estadio Monumental marked the new beginning under returning manager and River legend, Ramon Diaz. Never shy to give the press his opinion and responsible for the most successful spell in River’s illustrious history the future is going to get a lot more interesting and River fans will hope equally lucrative.

Diaz‚Äôs return brings a new hope and expectation to the Monumental and while many manages may crumble under this immense weight Diaz will be relishing it. When someone has such confidence in their abilities it is very difficult to break them and, at his unveiling as the new manager back in December, Diaz set the tone of his return by modestly claiming, ‚ÄúI am the greatest manager in this club‚Äôs history and with me in charge they would never have been relegated.‚ÄĚ Referring to River‚Äôs relegation in 2011 for the first time in the clubs history perhaps gives some insight into why expectation is so high. As River now emerge from what was the darkest era they now look forward but with the ever present reminder of the glory of yesteryear.

That is not to say that his appointment is the turning point, for sacked manager Matias Almeyda deserves considerable credit for the job he did in the wake of relegation and should not be forgotten. Immediate promotion back to the top flight and a fairly comfortable first season laid considerable foundations for what Diaz must now build. His advantage here being that he arrives on the crest of a wave and the club in buoyant mood rather than the huge black cloud and funereal atmosphere that Almeyda inherited. Perhaps, Almeyda had taken them as far as he could for now after a series of below par performances. Time will certainly tell if the reappointment of Diaz is a good one.

Like Almeyda, Diaz is seen as ‚Äėone of their own‚Äô, both products of River‚Äôs youth system, then heroes among the thousands of spectators that pack into The Monumental and ultimately taking the top job after announcing their retirement. The big difference being the unparalleled success that Diaz oversaw during his spell in charge. Diaz took over in 1995, just after his retirement as a player, and in his first full year in charge guided River to the Copa Libertadores in 1996. Before the end of this first stint, ending in 1999, River would also win four national championships and the Supercopa Sudamericana and the team that Diaz sculpted would be considered one of the best ever. The likes of Enzo Francescoli, Marcelo Salas, Ariel Ortega, and the aforementioned Matias Almeyda led River to much of this success but even after losing some of these players the River conveyor belt introduced the likes of Javier Saviola and Pablo Aimar. After a brief spell away, Diaz returned in 2002 and immediately brought with him success by capturing the Clausura tournament. However, his untenable relationship with club President, Jose Maria Aguilar meant that later that year Diaz left for the second time.

What was to happen next is probably ranked as one of the most bizarre managerial appointments in football history. One of the most successful managers in South American football history made the transition to Europe, and took over at Oxford United, at the time plying their trade in England‚Äôs fourth tier. How was such an unlikely match made? There appear to be different answers to this question: Diaz maintained that it was footballing reasons, stating ‚ÄúI like English football and I wanted to get first-hand experience of it. It‚Äôs also very interesting to work at this level, because it‚Äôs completely different from football at the top.‚ÄĚ It‚Äôs these differences that make this tale so unlikely, not that I want to question Diaz‚Äôs integrity. Diaz apparently worked for free in exchange for a 10% stake in the club and in doing so Oxford were also able to skirt any potential work permit issues. Whatever, the truth behind this story was it was an experiment which, although initially had good results, ultimately failed for both Oxford United and Ramon Diaz.

In 2007 Ramon Diaz returned to Argentina to take over at San Lorenzo. His midas touch on Argentine soil continued and in his first season in charge San Lorenzo won the 2007 Clausura title, the first in six years. However, it was at this point that problems began to surface and tensions between Diaz and some of his senior players and club officials meant relations were at breaking point. The fall out eventually saw Diaz leave his post after just a year in charge and is added to the list of broken relationships that Diaz has cultivated in a relatively short managerial career.

Over the next four years Diaz would take charge of three different Jobs. First in Mexico, with Club America, where he was apparently paid an exorbitant amount of money before being fired in 2009. Then a return to San Lorenzo where he was unable to match the success of his first spell resulting in him resigning after a year and lastly at Independiente, where he also resigned following a spell of poor results.

And now Diaz has returned to the place where it all started for him, as a boy in River’s youth team. Since his last spell at River his career has taken a downward turn barring the one championship while at San Lorenzo and so his return is not only a chance for River to revive their glorious days of old but also Diaz to remind the world that he is as good a manager as he says he is. What is without question is that his return has given the whole club a lift and now the fans wait expectantly for results. The initial signs are good, wins in pre-season over rivals, Boca Juniors and two wins out of two in the league with no added distraction of the Copa Libertadores could see River mount a real challenge for the title. Can Ramons Diaz replicate the success from earlier in his career?

Santos seals CCL semifinal spot

TORREON, Mexico -- Santos Laguna took advantage of a pair of Houston Dynamo errors during a five-minute span in the first half to transform a deficit into a lead as the Mexican team clinched a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals on Wednesday night.

Juan Pablo Rodriguez and Herculez Gomez scored in the first half and Marc Crosas added an insurance goal in the second half as Santos registered a 3-0 quarterfinal win at the Estadio Corona. The Guerreros won the aggregate-goals series, 3-1.

Santos, runner-up in the competition last year to fellow Mexican club Monterrey, will play the Seattle Sounders in the semifinals. The Sounders overcame a 2-0 deficit against Tigres on Tuesday to win their quarterfinal pairing, 3-2 on aggregate.

Within a rousing five-minute span, Santos turned a 1-0 deficit from the opening leg into a 2-1 advantage against a stunned Dynamo side.

The transformation began in the 22nd minute, when Warren Creavalle took down Mexican Olympic hero Oribe Peralta in the penalty area as the host was awarded a penalty kick and the Houston defender a yellow card.

A minute later, Rodriguez ripped a penalty shot that goalkeeper Tally Hall managed to get a hand on, deflecting the ball off the crossbar and straight down. As he and Houston´s Andy Moffat raced in toward the goalmouth with Hall on the ground, Rodriguez bundled the ball home for a 1-0 Santos lead and his first goal of this season´s competition.

Only five minutes later, Santos found itself with a 2-0 advantage, scoring off a counterattack. Gomez, a U.S. international striker, sprinted down the right side with the ball along with defender Bobby Boswell. As the two reached the upper corner of the penalty area, it appeared Boswell had a major miscommunication error with Hall, who had come out of his net to the edge of the box. No one called for the ball, and that gave Gomez the space he needed to shoot into an empty goal.

It was Gomez´s eighth Champions League goal -- all against U.S. teams.

Houston´s best first-half scoring opportunity came in the 26th minute, when midfielder Brad Davis blasted a rocket of a free kick that Mexican international goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez parried away. Moffat eventually got the ball, but he powered his try over the bar.

Santos took its foot off the pedal a bit in the second half, but the Dynamo could not muster enough chances to produce any dangerous opportunities.

In an attempt to bolster his team´s attack for the equalizing goal, Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear brought on former U.S. international striker Brian Ching for Giles Barnes in the 67th minute. Ching, however, could not produce any late-match magic as his 89th-minute header from point-blank ranged sailed over the crossbar.

Santos, however, did produce a goal. An unmarked Crosas increased the host´s lead to 3-0 as he slotted home Osmar Mares´ long feed from the left side past Hall in the 77th minute. Crosas got past second-half sub Andrew Driver and had plenty of time and room to score the vital insurance tally.

LA Galaxy claims CCL semifinal berth

http://www.youtube.com/w…Vb1K5WOLrqY

CARSON, Calif. - The LA Galaxy booked its ticket into the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, beating Herediano, 4-1, in the second leg of the quarterfinals at the Home Depot Center Wednesday night.

The Major League Soccer squad, which won 4-1 on aggregate after the two sides played to a goalless draw last week in Costa Rica, advances to take on Monterrey in the semifinals. The two-time defending champions defeated Xelaju 4-2 on aggregate to reach its third straight semifinal.

Omar Gonzalez scored the decisive goal in the 18th minute, bouncing a downward header from a Juninho corner kick off Herediano´s Marvin Obando.

Jose Villarreal, the United States youth international who scored three goals at the recently completed CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, added a much-needed insurance goal in the 69th minute.

He received a ball in space from Sean Franklin, spun around Esteban Grandos and fired past Herediano´s sprawling goalkeeper Daniel Cambronero inside the far post.

Irish international Robbie Keane made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute, receiving a pass from Michael Stephens and slotting the ball inside the far post from an acute angle.

Two minutes later, Elias Aguilar scored a cosmetic goal for Herediano, taking a Waylon Francis pass and putting a left-footed shot past Galaxy goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini from 12 meters.

Second-half substitute Jack McBean put the finishing touches on a decisive victory for the Galaxy, taking a quick free kick by Stephens and curling the ball inside the far post on the final kick of the match in second-half stoppage time.

While the Galaxy struck first, it was the visitors with the first quality scoring chance 10 minutes earlier as Ismael Gomez bent a free kick that Cudicini parried over the crossbar for a corner kick.

In the 24th minute, Gomez had another chance, but he bounced his shot from 25 meters wide of the right post.

Los Angeles came close to adding a second goal in the first half as Franklin blasted an attempt from the corner of the 18-yard box on target, but Cambronero made the save in the 27th minute.

In the 31st minute, Keane played Mike Magee into the area, but Cambronero pounced off his line to smother the ball.

Herediano nearly found the equalizer it so desperately needed in the 54th minute when Aguilar had a free header in front of goal with Cudicini leaning the wrong way. But the Costa Rican put his attempt well over the bar.
