Gallego leaves Independiente….Where do Independiente go now?

Last night Americo Gallego parted company with Independiente as the club stand on the brink of relegation. Following Friday night’s 1 – 1 draw with Union, a result which deepened the sense of despair, and the ugly scenes which followed it is understood that Gallego offered his resignation, only for it to be rejected by the club’s board. However, 24 hours later, after lengthy discussions Gallego has gone. 6 games without a win and a miraculous run of results needed from the remaining 10 fixtures leave Independiente staring at relegation for the first time in the club’s history. All week the fans had made their feelings known, first with threats to players as they arrived to training and culminating in clashes with police as they tried to enter the dressing rooms after Friday’s disappointment.

Where does this leave Independiente? 10 games to save their legacy and currently rudderless. One strong suggestion is that they will turn to Julio Cesar Falcioni, who left Boca at the beginning of this season, if they can persuade him to take on the job. His credentials are good, having won the Apertura with Banfield in 2009 and then again, with Boca in 2011 but it could be a difficult sell at this stage. Rumour has it that Independiente are all to aware of this and will make him a lucrative offer to take over. Seemingly the first choice, who else could El Rojo turn to if Falcioni doesn’t fancy it?

The other two names in the frame are, Enzo Trossero and Jorge Fossati. Both are vastly experienced internationally and have a prior link to the club either as players, managers or both. Whoever Independiente settle on, they face a mammoth task to keep them in the Primera division and if that is not possible then rebuilding this great club back to it’s former glory and lifting the dark cloud that has enveloped it in recent times.

U-17 Sudamericano: Brazil defeats Uruguay in the beginning of the hexagonal final

http://www.youtube.com/w…aBdsCm5NYGw

Brazil, the defending champion, defeated Uruguay 1-0 on Sunday in the match that opened the final round of the 2013 U-17 Sudamericano in Argentina. The tournament awards four places to the World Cup in the UAE.

The lone goal was scored by Mosquito (21 minutes) who took advantage of a rebound off the post from a shot by his teammate Caio.

Brazil was the one that generated more scoring chances against a Uruguay that was good in defense but lacked depth in attack.

The teams tied 1-1 in their first game of the group stage, in which Brazil finished top of Group B with 10 points, followed by Uruguay with 8.

This game was played at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta in the province of San Luis, some 800 kilometers to the west of Buenos Aires.

There will be two more matches following the Brazil-Uruguay match played in the same stadium: Paraguay-Venezuela and Argentina-Peru.

In the second round to be played on Wednesday, Brazil goes up against Venezuela and Uruguay, the world U-17 runner-up, faces Argentina.

The six remaining South American teams in this final are looking to qualify to the World Cup that will be played from October 17 to November 8 in the United Arab Emirates.

Venezuela beat Paraguay 1-0 on Sunday to start off on the right foot in the final round of the U-17 Sudamericano to be played until April 28 in the province of San Luis, Argentina for four passes to the 2013 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Andrés Ponce scored the lone goal in the 54th minute in the match played at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta.

The Paraguayans had qualified for this stage as leader of Group B ahead of Argentina and Venezuela.

Venezuelan José Luis Marrugo and Paraguayan Ángel Benítez both saw yellow cards on the day.

U-17 Sudamericano: Argentina defeats Peru 2-0 and leads the tournament

http://www.youtube.com/w…S51WgaSwsUs

The host nation got goals from Franco Pérez (42) and Matías Sánchez (51) in the match played at the Juan Gilberto Funes stadium in the city of La Punta in the province of San Luis.

The young Argentinians justified the result by playing good football while Peru squandered several chances to get back in the game, the clearest chance coming from a superb header by Renzo Garcés that the Argentine goalkeeper was able to get to.

Peru played much of the match a man down owing to the sending off of César Hernández who received two yellow cards for rough play.

Also seeing yellow was Argentinian Matías Sánchez and Peruvian Dángelo Artiaga.

Argentina had made it to the hexagonal as the second place team in Group A with 6 points. Peru came in third place in the group with 4 points.

In the two previous matches Brazil defeated Uruguay 1-0 and Venezuela defeated Paraguay by the same score.

About fucking time....

CONMEBOL and CONCACAF strengthen ties

One of the larger CONMEBOL delegations of recent times will travel to Panama to participate in the XXVIII Official Congress of CONCACAF that will take place Friday the 19th in Panama.

The gesture indicates the renewed and strengthened relations that exist between the two continental institutions.

NICOLÁS LEOZ LEADS DELEGATION ALONG WITH OTHER NOTED AUTHORITIES

The delegation will be lead by Dr. Nicolás Leoz and the various presidents of the national associations that make up CONMEBOL: Carlos Chávez (Bolivia), Sergio Jadue Jadue (Chile), Luís Bedoya (Colombia), Luís Chiriboga (Ecuador), Juan Angel Napout (Paraguay), Rafael Esquivel (Venezuela). Also attending will be CONMEBOL vice president Eugenio Figueredo and secretary general José Luís Meiszner.

Last year, Mr. Jeffrey Webb, president of CONCACAF, was able to attend the final of the Copa Libertadores de America tournament. During his visit, he was able to maintain a dialogue with Dr. Leoz and the various members of the Executive Committee of the Confederation, where they analized aspects of the agreements that bind the current federations, the possibilities of consolidating all of their assets in one joint body.

Honduras tops U.S., earns U-17 WC spot

http://www.youtube.com/w…rozmKyZrr_k

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Honduras recorded a 3-1 quarterfinal win to stun the United States to qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and reach the semifinals of the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship on Sunday night.

The result denied the Americans from qualifying for the U-17 World Cup for the first time. The U.S. was the only country that had participated in every FIFA U-17 world championship, having qualified a record 14 times.

The Hondurans will play the winner of the Mexico-Guatemala quarterfinal match in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Christopher Alegria, Alberth Elis and Kevin Alvarez scored for the Central Americans, who defeated the U.S. for the first time in eight meetings in the U-17 championship. Honduras entered the match with a 0-0-7 record vs. the U.S.

The Americans controlled the early part of the game, but had little to show from their efforts.

With the match barely three minutes old, the U.S. had the first opportunity as Shaquell Moore had close-range header off a corner kick.

Corey Baird fired a left-footed shot that bounced to Honduras goalkeeper Cristian Hernandez, who bobbled the ball a bit, but covered up for his second save in the 10th minute.

Three minutes later, Hernandez was up to the task again, denying Joel Sonora from eight yards.

The Hondurans got back into the swing of things, placing their first shot on goal in the 18th minute. Devron Garcia tapped captain Luis Santos a free kick and Santos launched a low shot that went right to goalkeeper Jefferson Caldwell.

Brayan Velasquez broke through the U.S. defense in the 26th minute and raced in on Caldwell, who managed to knock the ball away before the Honduran could get off a shot. Velasquez was injured on the play and limped off the field before rejoining the action minutes later.

Honduras grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute on a screaming, 30-yard drive by Alegria. Alvaro Romero, on the left flank, passed the ball to an unmarked Alegria toward the middle of the field and he fired a line drive that Caldwell got a hand on, but could not stop from going into the far right corner.

Sonora equalized for the U.S. in the 45th minute. The Boca Juniors youth product took a pass from Christopher Lema and as Honduran players converged, he sent a 30-yard rocket to the near left post for a 1-1 tie.

Velasquez turned playmaker for Honduras in the 57th minute. He sent a diagonal pass to an onrushing Elis, who beat defender Thomas Redding to the ball, before he tipped it past Caldwell from six yards for a 2-1 lead. An exuberant Elis took off his blue shirt to celebrate as referee Henry Bejarano of Costa Rica issued him a yellow card.

Elis almost gave the Hondurans a two-goal lead off a counterattack in the 66th minute. He raced down the field with U.S. defender John Requejo Jr. and fired 12-yard blast that hit the underside of the crossbar. The game officials ruled that the ball did not cross the goal line and play continued.

However, Honduras did give itself some breathing room only two minutes later. This time Alvarez powered home a 28-yard rocket off a free kick to the left near post past a leaping Caldwell for a 3-1 advantage. Copying Elis, Alvarez also ripped off his shirt to celebrate his goal and was assessed a yellow card.
