Libertadores 2013: Gremio beats Santa Fe in round of sixteen competition

http://www.youtube.com/w…yF3NCZH0LkI

Gremio beat Santa Fe of Colombia 2-1 this Wednesday in a game played as part of the round of sixteen in Copa Libertadores 2013 competition. The game was the first in a series of two and was played in Porto Alegre.

Chilean Eduardo Vargas put the first points on the board for Gremio at 27 minutes and Fernando gave them the victory at 80.

Argentinian Omar Pérez managed to briefly tie the game 1-1 for Santa Fe at 54 minutes on a penalty kick.

In the next game, on May 16th in Campín de Bogotá stadium, Gremio will try to continue its advance towards the next round of competition. To do so they will need to win, tie, or lose under special circumstances. If they score more than two goals and only lose by one, they will enter the next round of competition. On the other hand, Santa Fe will need to win 1-0, or win with a margin of two goals if the Brazilian team manages to score.

Grêmio 2 Independiente Santa Fe 1: Luxemburgo’s team win despite Cris being sent-off

Grêmio secured a 2-1 victory over Independiente Santa Fe on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores last 16 tie at the Grêmio Arena, but were made to sweat for the victory over the Columbians after being reduced to 10 men following a red card to defender Cris early in the second half.

A near full house in Porto Alegre saw the home side dominate the first half and create a number of chances to take the lead, including an Elano effort against the bar, before Eduardo Vargas headed in Alex Telles’s cross on 27 minutes.

Grêmio head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who is banned from the touchline for his part in the brawl which marred the draw against Huachipato last month, would have been pleased with his side’s first half but his mood would have quickly changed to dispair 10 minutes into the second half.

Cris, who was just back from suspension having been sent-off against Fluminense in the group stage, received a straight red for his foul in the area. The resulting penalty was expertly dispatched by Independiente midfielder Omar Pérez to make it 1-1.

With the away side starting to take charge of the game, Grêmio threw on two young players to add some energy into their game, with new recruit Gabriel coming on for Elano and Guilherme Biteco replacing Alex Telles, with André Santos moving back into the left back slot.

And these changes seemed to do the trick. The tricolor started to push forward again and eventually made the break through with 10 minutes remaining.

A Grêmio cross was cleared to the edge of the box straight to Fernando, who control the ball on his chest, let the ball bounce before firing the ball past Vargas in the Columbian goal to give the Brazilians a precious lead.

Grêmio will now travel to Columbia in two weeks time (16th May) for the second leg, knowing a draw will be enough to see them progress to the quarter-final.

GRÊMIO: Didal; Pará, Cris, Bressan, Alex Telles (Guilherme Biteco - 27´/2ºT); Fernando, Souza; André Santos, Elano (Gabriel - 11´/2ºT); Vargas, Barcos (Kleber - 41´/2ºT)- Coach: Roger.

INDEPENDIENTE SANTA FE: Vargas; Roa, Valdés, Meza, García; Anchico, Torres, Bedoya (Valencia - 21´/2ºT), Omar Pérez; Cuero (Borja - 17´/2ºT), Wilder Medina - Coach: Wilson Gutiérrez.

Goals: Vargas (G), 27´/1ºT (1-0); Pérez (I), 9´/2ºT (1-1) and Fernando (G), 35´/2ºT (2-1)

2013 Libertadores: Boca with a victory and hope

http://www.youtube.com/w…h_ubki8O-ic

Argentinian club Boca Juniors defeated reigning champion Corinthians of Brazil 1-0 in their first leg match in the round of 16 at the Copa Libertadores. The match was played Wednesday night at the Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires.

Nicolás Blandi, in the 59th minute, scored the lone goal. Boca finished the game with 10 men owing to the sending off of Pablo Ledesma (84).

Boca clearly was the better team than the reigning champions on the night. However they beat them by the slightest of margins which they will bring with them to the rematch to be played on May 15 at the Pacaembú in Sao Paulo.

With a tie in the return leg Boca will qualify to the round of 8 while Corinthians will need two goals to make it to the next round or a 1-0 win to force a penalty shootout.

Boca manager Bianchi pleased with win over Corinthians

Boca Juniors´ manager Carlos Bianchi is pleased with his team, following the 1-0 win over Corinthians in Buenos Aires, for the Copa Libertadores´ knockout stage.

The Argentine team were widely regarded as the underdogs before the game, but managed to exceed the expectations to defeat the world champions.

Manager Carlos Bianchi talked to reporters about the game, he said: "These are special games, where one team know they have to do more than the other one. The team showed they can have good performances.!

"It was a tough game, we were playing against the world champions, who are even stronger now."

Bianchi believes this is the moment the team can change their luck, he said: " We can be among the teams that play football well. It´s important that we didn´t concede. The team worked hard and I think we can be more positive about the future."

"The attitude is more important than the system you employ. If you don´t have a positive attitude, you can´t win."

Tite confident Corinthians can beat Boca at Pacaembu

Corinthians head coach Tite is confident his team can come back from their 1-0 Copa Libertadores defeat to Boca Juniors on Wednesday night in the return leg at the Pacaembu later this month.

The current holders went down to a Nicolas Blandi goal in their round of 16 first leg at La Bombonera but Tite still thinks his side have what it takes to progress further in this year’s competition.

He told Lancenet: “It is a normal result (to lose 1-0 in La Bombonera). Of course we did not want to lose, but it is fully reversible.

“We have the perfect conditions at home to reverse the score. This is the mark of the game.”

The coach was disappointed in the game, which he felt was more of a fight than a football match.

“We could play more. We are able to play more. Both teams can deliver a better performance. The game had too much catimba (fight), too much dispute and not enough football. Boca took advantage of this and their intensity was effective. We have to win.”

And Tite, who has led Corinthians to the Brazilian national title, the Copa Libertadores and the Fifa World Club Cup in the past two years, was annoyed at suggestions his team were intimidated by playing at La Bombonera.

“Did they feel La Bombonera? The team came here as world champions!

“Now we have to win the game, regardless of anything. We must have strength. A team that wants to win must have quality. In our house, the crowd makes a difference.

“Let´s create this environment so that we can take advantage of this aspect.”

Monterrey wins third CCL title

http://www.youtube.com/w…-UJcDn_kLl8

MONTERRY, Mexico -- Faced with a two-goal deficit entering the final 30 minutes, Monterrey pulled off a comeback for the ages to win the CONCACAF Champions League crown for a record third consecutive time on Wednesday night.

Aldo De Nigris´ second goal of the match snapped a 2-2 deadlock in the 87th minute and Humberto Suazo added an insurance goal in stoppage time to lift Monterrey to a 4-2 victory over Mexican rival Santos Laguna at Estadio Tecnológico.

Monterrey won the aggregate goals series, 4-2, after the teams played to a scoreless draw at Santos last week.

Los Rayados also booked their third consecutive berth to the FIFA Club World Cup, which will next be held in Morocco from Dec. 11-21, 2013.

Monterrey equaled Cruz Azul´s feat of winning three consecutive confederation club titles (1969-71), when the competition was known as the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Santos lost to Monterrey in the final for the second consecutive year.

Carlos Darwin Quintero and Felipe Baloy had given Santos a 2-0 advantage, but Monterrey refused to give up.

De Nigris sliced the deficit in half on the hour as the Mexican international slotted home a right-wing cross from Jesus Corona. The 29-year-old forward needed only one touch to beat goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez from eight yards.

Second-half substitute Neri Cardozo equalized in the 84th minute, firing home a shot from the top of the box for his third goal of the competition.

With time running out, De Nigris performed some more heroics, heading home a long free kick off the foot of Suazo from close-range in the 87th minute to give the host a 3-2 lead.

But Monterrey wasn´t finished. Suazo got onto the scoresheet, converting a left-wing feed from Jesus Zavala from 12 yards off a counterattack two minutes into stoppage time to punctuate the amazing comeback. It was Suazo´s fifth goal in his three final series appearances, a confederation record. He also has scored a team-best 16 goals in the competition, which places him third on the all-time list.

Los Rayados had the better opportunities in the opening half, but Santos grabbed a 1-0 lead on Quintero´s goal in the 38th minute. The Monterrey defense cleared a close-range attempt, but the ball was fed into the box to Quintero, who beat goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco. Quintero and Isidro Metapan´s Nicolas Munoz finished as the competition´s Golden Boot winners with six goals each.

The first half was more like a highlight reel for Suazo, who had three decent attempts at goal from various parts of the field.

In the 12th minute, the Chilean international headed a shot wide right of the net.

Five minutes later, his long free kick sailed just over the crossbar.

And in the 19th minute, Suazo fired a 12-yard shot straight into the arms of goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez.

Santos thought it had grabbed the lead in the 32nd minute on Rafael Figueroa´s header, but he was ruled to be offside.

Baloy, who captains the Panama National Team, boosted the visitors into a two-goal advantage in the 50th minute on a header from four yards that landed in the lower left corner. It was Baloy´s first goal of the CCL competition.

With the win, Monterrey equalized Cruz Azul and Santos for the most victories in CCL with 25 wins apiece, although Los Rayados have played 10 less matches than Santos and six less than Cruz Azul. Monterrey´s all-time record in the competition is 25 wins, six draw and three losses. The Mexican side has outscored its foes, 70-22. It also improved its CCL home record to 14 wins, two ties and one loss.
